Good News Translation

Abimelech

9 Gideon's son Abimelech went to the town of Shechem, where all his mother's relatives lived, and told them 2 to ask the men of Shechem, “Which would you prefer? To have all seventy of Gideon's sons govern you or to have just one man? Remember that Abimelech is your own flesh and blood.” 3 His mother's relatives talked to the men of Shechem about this for him, and the men of Shechem decided to follow Abimelech because he was their relative. 4 They gave him seventy pieces of silver from the temple of Baal-of-the-Covenant, and with this money he hired a bunch of worthless scoundrels to join him. 5 He went to his father's house at Ophrah, and there on top of a single stone he killed his seventy brothers, Gideon's sons. But Jotham, Gideon's youngest son, hid and was not killed. 6 Then all the men of Shechem and Bethmillo got together and went to the sacred oak tree at Shechem, where they made Abimelech king.

7 When Jotham heard about this, he went and stood on top of Mount Gerizim and shouted out to them, “Listen to me, you men of Shechem, and God may listen to you! 8 Once upon a time the trees went out to choose a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Be our king.’ 9 The olive tree answered, ‘In order to govern you, I would have to stop producing my oil, which is used to honor gods and human beings.’ 10 Then the trees said to the fig tree, ‘You come and be our king.’ 11 But the fig tree answered, ‘In order to govern you, I would have to stop producing my good sweet fruit.’ 12 So the trees then said to the grapevine, ‘You come and be our king.’ 13 But the vine answered, ‘In order to govern you, I would have to stop producing my wine, that makes gods and human beings happy.’ 14 So then all the trees said to the thorn bush, ‘You come and be our king.’ 15 The thorn bush answered, ‘If you really want to make me your king, then come and take shelter in my shade. If you don't, fire will blaze out of my thorny branches and burn up the cedars of Lebanon.’

16 “Now then,” Jotham continued, “were you really honest and sincere when you made Abimelech king? Did you respect Gideon's memory and treat his family properly, as his actions deserved? 17 Remember that my father fought for you. He risked his life to save you from the Midianites. 18 But today you turned against my father's family. You killed his sons—seventy men on a single stone—and just because Abimelech, his son by his servant woman, is your relative, you have made him king of Shechem. 19 Now then, if what you did today to Gideon and his family was sincere and honest, then be happy with Abimelech and let him be happy with you. 20 But if not, may fire blaze out from Abimelech and burn up the men of Shechem and Bethmillo. May fire blaze out from the men of Shechem and Bethmillo and burn Abimelech up.” 21 Then because he was afraid of his brother Abimelech, Jotham ran away and went to live at Beer.

22 Abimelech ruled Israel for three years. 23 Then God made Abimelech and the men of Shechem hostile to each other, and they rebelled against Abimelech. 24 This happened so that Abimelech and the men of Shechem, who encouraged him to murder Gideon's seventy sons, would pay for their crime. 25 The men of Shechem put men in ambush against Abimelech on the mountaintops, and they robbed everyone who passed their way. Abimelech was told about this.

26 Then Gaal son of Ebed came to Shechem with his brothers, and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him. 27 They all went out into their vineyards and picked the grapes, made wine from them, and held a festival. They went into the temple of their god, where they ate and drank and made fun of Abimelech. 28 Gaal said, “What kind of men are we in Shechem? Why are we serving Abimelech? Who is he, anyway? The son of Gideon! And Zebul takes orders from him, but why should we serve him? Be loyal to your ancestor Hamor, who founded your clan! 29 I wish I were leading this people! I would get rid of Abimelech! I would tell[a] him, ‘Reinforce your army, come on out and fight!’”

30 Zebul, the ruler of the city, became angry when he heard what Gaal had said. 31 He sent messengers to Abimelech at Arumah[b] to say, “Gaal son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem, and they are not going to let you into the city. 32 Now then, you and your men should move by night and hide in the fields. 33 Get up tomorrow morning at sunrise and make a sudden attack on the city. Then when Gaal and his men come out against you, hit them with all you've got!”

34 So Abimelech and all his men made their move at night and hid outside Shechem in four groups. 35 When Abimelech and his men saw Gaal come out and stand at the city gate, they got up from their hiding places. 36 Gaal saw them and said to Zebul, “Look! There are men coming down from the mountaintops!”

“Those are not men,” Zebul answered. “They are just shadows on the mountains.”

37 Gaal said again, “Look! There are men coming down the crest of the mountain and one group is coming along the road from the oak tree of the fortunetellers!”

38 Then Zebul said to him, “Where is all your big talk now? You were the one who asked why we should serve this man Abimelech. These are the men you were making fun of. Go on out now and fight them.” 39 Gaal led the men of Shechem out and fought Abimelech. 40 Abimelech started after Gaal, and Gaal ran. Many were wounded, even at the city gate. 41 Abimelech lived in Arumah, and Zebul drove Gaal and his brothers out of Shechem, so that they could no longer live there.

42 The next day Abimelech found out that the people of Shechem were planning to go out into the fields, 43 so he took his men, divided them into three groups, and hid in the fields, waiting. When he saw the people coming out of the city, he came out of hiding to kill them. 44 While Abimelech and his group hurried forward to guard the city gate, the other two companies attacked the people in the fields and killed them all. 45 The fighting continued all day long. Abimelech captured the city, killed its people, tore it down, and covered the ground with salt.

46 When all the leading men in the fort at Shechem heard about this, they sought safety in the stronghold of the temple of Baal-of-the-Covenant. 47 Abimelech was told that they had gathered there, 48 so he went up to Mount Zalmon with his men. There he took an ax, cut a limb off a tree, and put it on his shoulder. He told his men to hurry and do the same thing. 49 So everyone cut off a tree limb; then they followed Abimelech and piled the wood up against the stronghold. They set it on fire, with the people inside, and all the people of the fort died—about a thousand men and women.

50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez, surrounded that city, and captured it. 51 There was a strong tower there, and every man and woman in the city, including the leaders, ran to it. They locked themselves in and went up to the roof. 52 When Abimelech came to attack the tower, he went up to the door to set the tower on fire. 53 (A)But a woman threw a millstone down on his head and fractured his skull. 54 Then he quickly called the young man who was carrying his weapons and told him, “Draw your sword and kill me. I don't want it said that a woman killed me.” So the young man ran him through, and he died. 55 When the Israelites saw that Abimelech was dead, they all went home.

56 And so it was that God paid Abimelech back for the crime that he committed against his father in killing his seventy brothers. 57 God also made the men of Shechem suffer for their wickedness, just as Jotham, Gideon's son, said they would when he cursed them.

Conspiración de Abimelec

9 Abimelec, hijo de Jerobaal(A), fue a Siquem, a los parientes[a] de su madre, y les dijo a ellos y a toda la familia de la casa del padre de su madre: 2 «Hablen ahora a oídos de todos los habitantes[b] de Siquem: “¿Qué es mejor para ustedes, que todos los hijos de Jerobaal, setenta hombres(B), reinen sobre ustedes, o que reine sobre ustedes un solo hombre?”. Además, acuérdense que yo soy hueso y carne de ustedes(C)».

3 Y los parientes de su madre hablaron todas estas palabras por él a oídos de todos los habitantes de Siquem. Y ellos se inclinaron a seguir a[c] Abimelec, porque dijeron: «Es pariente nuestro(D)». 4 Le dieron setenta piezas de plata de la casa de Baal Berit(E), con las cuales Abimelec tomó a sueldo hombres indignos y temerarios que lo siguieron. 5 Luego fue a la casa de su padre en Ofra y sobre una piedra mató a sus hermanos, los hijos de Jerobaal, setenta hombres(F). Pero Jotam, el hijo menor de Jerobaal, se libró[d] porque se escondió(G). 6 Y se reunieron todos los habitantes de Siquem y todo Bet Milo[e], y fueron e hicieron rey a Abimelec, junto a la encina[f] del pilar que había en Siquem.

7 Cuando se lo informaron a Jotam, fue y se paró en la cumbre del monte Gerizim(H), y alzando su voz, clamó y les dijo: «Escúchenme, habitantes de Siquem, para que los oiga Dios. 8 Una vez los árboles fueron a ungir un rey sobre ellos, y dijeron al olivo: “Reina sobre nosotros”.

9 »Pero el olivo les respondió: “¿He de dejar mi aceite[g] con el cual[h] se honra a Dios y a los hombres, para ir a ondear sobre los árboles?”.

10 »Entonces los árboles dijeron a la higuera: “Ven, reina sobre nosotros”.

11 »Pero la higuera les respondió: “¿He de dejar mi dulzura y mi buen fruto, para ir a ondear sobre los árboles?”.

12 »Después los árboles dijeron a la vid: “Ven tú, reina sobre nosotros”.

13 »Pero la vid les respondió: “¿He de dejar mi vino nuevo, que alegra a Dios y a los hombres, para ir a ondear sobre los árboles?”.

14 »Dijeron entonces todos los árboles a la zarza: “Ven tú, reina sobre nosotros”.

15 »Y la zarza dijo a los árboles: “Si en verdad[i] me ungen por rey sobre ustedes, vengan y refúgiense a mi sombra; y si no, salga fuego de la zarza y consuma los cedros del Líbano”.

16 »Ahora pues, si ustedes han procedido con verdad[j] e integridad al hacer rey a Abimelec, y si han procedido bien con Jerobaal(I) y su casa, y si han procedido con él como él merecía[k] 17 (pues mi padre peleó por ustedes, y arriesgó su vida[l] y los libró de la mano de Madián, 18 pero ustedes se han rebelado hoy contra la casa de mi padre y han matado a sus hijos, setenta hombres(J), sobre una piedra, y han hecho rey sobre los habitantes de Siquem a Abimelec, el hijo de su sierva(K), porque es pariente de ustedes), 19 si han, pues, procedido hoy en verdad[m] e integridad para con Jerobaal y su casa, regocíjense en Abimelec, y que él también se regocije en ustedes. 20 Y si no, salga fuego de Abimelec y consuma a los habitantes de Siquem y de Bet Milo[n]. Y salga fuego de los habitantes de Siquem y de Bet Milo[o] y consuma a Abimelec». 21 Entonces Jotam escapó y huyó, y se fue a Beer y permaneció allí a causa de su hermano Abimelec.

Reinado de Abimelec

22 Abimelec reinó tres años sobre Israel. 23 Pero Dios envió un espíritu de discordia(L) entre Abimelec y los habitantes de Siquem; y los habitantes de Siquem procedieron pérfidamente con Abimelec(M), 24 para que viniera la violencia hecha a los[p] setenta hijos de Jerobaal(N), y recayera la sangre de ellos sobre su hermano Abimelec que los mató, y sobre los habitantes de Siquem que fortalecieron las manos de él para matar a sus hermanos(O). 25 Los habitantes de Siquem pusieron emboscadas[q] contra él en las cumbres de los montes y robaban a todos los que pasaban cerca de ellos por el camino; y se lo hicieron saber a Abimelec.

26 Gaal, hijo de Ebed, vino con sus parientes, y pasaron a Siquem; y los habitantes de Siquem pusieron su confianza en él. 27 Y salieron al campo y vendimiaron sus viñedos, pisaron las uvas e hicieron fiesta. Y entrando a la casa de su dios(P), comieron y bebieron y maldijeron a Abimelec. 28 Entonces Gaal, hijo de Ebed, dijo: «¿Quién es Abimelec y quién es Siquem para que le sirvamos? ¿No es acaso hijo de Jerobaal, y no es Zebul su oficial[r]? Sirvan a los hombres de Hamor, padre de Siquem(Q); pero ¿por qué hemos de servirle a él? 29 ¡Quién pusiera este pueblo en mis manos(R)! Entonces yo quitaría a Abimelec». Diría a Abimelec: «Aumenta tu ejército, y sal».

30 Cuando Zebul, gobernante de la ciudad, oyó las palabras de Gaal, hijo de Ebed, se encendió en ira. 31 Y envió secretamente mensajeros a Abimelec, diciendo: «Gaal, hijo de Ebed, y sus parientes han venido a Siquem, y están alborotando[s] a la ciudad contra ti. 32 Ahora pues, levántate de noche, tú y el pueblo que está contigo, y pon emboscada en el campo. 33 Y en la mañana, en cuanto salga el sol, te levantarás temprano y atacarás la ciudad. Entonces, cuando Gaal y el pueblo que está con él salga contra ti, harás con ellos lo que te venga a mano(S)».

34 Abimelec y todo el pueblo que estaba con él, se levantaron de noche y pusieron emboscada contra Siquem con cuatro compañías[t]. 35 Gaal, hijo de Ebed, salió y se paró a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad. Y Abimelec y el pueblo que estaba con él salieron de la emboscada. 36 Al ver Gaal a la gente, dijo a Zebul: «Mira, viene gente bajando de las cumbres de los montes». «Estás viendo la sombra de los montes como si fueran hombres», le dijo Zebul.

37 Pero Gaal volvió a hablar y dijo: «Veo gente que baja de la parte más alta[u] de la tierra(T), y una compañía viene por el camino de la encina[v] de los adivinos[w]». 38 Entonces Zebul le dijo: «¿Dónde está ahora tu jactancia[x] con la cual decías: “¿Quién es Abimelec para que le sirvamos?”? ¿No es este el pueblo que despreciabas? Ahora pues, sal y pelea contra él».

39 Y salió Gaal delante de los habitantes de Siquem y peleó contra Abimelec. 40 Abimelec lo persiguió pero Gaal[y] huyó delante de él. Y muchos cayeron heridos hasta la entrada de la puerta. 41 Y Abimelec se quedó en Aruma, pero Zebul expulsó a Gaal y a sus parientes para que no se quedaran en Siquem.

Captura de Siquem

42 Al día siguiente el pueblo salió al campo, y se lo hicieron saber a Abimelec. 43 Y él tomó a su[z] gente, la dividió en tres compañías y puso emboscadas en el campo. Cuando miró y vio al pueblo salir de la ciudad, se levantó contra ellos y los mató[aa]. 44 Entonces Abimelec y la compañía[ab] que estaba con él se lanzaron con ímpetu y se situaron a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad, y las otras dos compañías se lanzaron contra todos los que estaban en el campo y los mataron[ac]. 45 Y peleó Abimelec contra la ciudad todo aquel día, capturó la ciudad y mató a la gente que había en ella. Entonces arrasó la ciudad y la sembró de sal(U).

46 Al oír esto todos los habitantes de la torre de Siquem, se metieron en la fortaleza[ad] del templo[ae] de El Berit[af](V). 47 Y le informaron a Abimelec que todos los habitantes de la torre de Siquem estaban reunidos.

48 Abimelec subió entonces al monte Salmón(W), él y toda la gente que estaba con él; y tomando Abimelec un hacha[ag] en su mano, cortó una rama de los árboles, la levantó y la puso sobre su hombro. Y dijo a la gente que estaba con él: «Lo que me han visto hacer, apresúrense y hagan lo mismo[ah]». 49 Y todo el pueblo cortó también cada uno su rama y siguió a Abimelec, y las pusieron sobre la fortaleza[ai]; prendieron fuego a la fortaleza[aj] sobre los que estaban adentro, y murieron también todos los[ak] de la torre de Siquem, como 1,000 hombres y mujeres.

Muerte de Abimelec

50 Después Abimelec fue a Tebes, la sitió[al] y la tomó. 51 Pero había una torre fortificada en el centro de la ciudad, y todos los hombres y mujeres, todos los habitantes de la ciudad, huyeron allí, se encerraron y subieron al techo de la torre. 52 Abimelec vino a la torre, la atacó y se acercó a la entrada de la torre para prenderle fuego. 53 Pero una mujer arrojó una rueda de molino sobre la cabeza de Abimelec(X) rompiéndole el cráneo.

54 Entonces él llamó apresuradamente al muchacho que era su escudero, y le dijo: «Saca tu espada y mátame(Y), no sea que se diga de mí: “Una mujer lo mató”». Y el[am] muchacho lo traspasó, y murió. 55 Cuando los hombres de Israel vieron que Abimelec había muerto, cada cual se fue para su casa[an]. 56 Así pagó Dios a Abimelec por la maldad que había hecho a su padre al matar a sus setenta hermanos(Z). 57 Dios también hizo volver sobre sus cabezas toda la maldad de los hombres de Siquem, y vino sobre[ao] ellos la maldición de Jotam, hijo de Jerobaal.
