Abimelech becomes a king
9 Abimelech, Jerubbaal’s son, went to his mother’s brothers in Shechem. He spoke to them and to the entire clan of the household to which his mother belonged: 2 “Ask all the leaders of Shechem, ‘Which do you think is better to have ruling over you: seventy men—all of Jerubbaal’s sons—or one man?’ And remember that I’m your flesh and blood!”
3 So his mother’s brothers spoke all these words on his behalf to all the leaders of Shechem. They decided to follow Abimelech because they said, “He’s our relative.” 4 They gave him seventy pieces of silver from the temple of Baal-berith, with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless men, who became his posse. 5 He went to his household in Ophrah and killed all seventy of his brothers, Jerubbaal’s sons, on a single stone. Only Jotham the youngest of Jerubbaal’s sons survived, because he had hidden himself. 6 Then all the leaders of Shechem and all Beth-millo assembled and proceeded to make Abimelech king by the oak at the stone pillar[a] in Shechem.
Jotham’s fable
7 When Jotham was told about this, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim. He raised his voice and called out, “Listen to me, you leaders of Shechem, so that God may listen to you!
8 “Once the trees went out to anoint a king over themselves. So they said to the olive tree, ‘Be our king!’
9 “But the olive tree replied to them, ‘Should I stop producing my oil, which is how gods and humans are honored, so that I can go to sway over the trees?’
10 “So the trees said to the fig tree, ‘You come and be king over us!’
11 “The fig tree replied to them, ‘Should I stop producing my sweetness and my delicious fruit, so that I can go to sway over the trees?’
12 “Then the trees said to the vine, ‘You come and be king over us!’
13 “But the vine replied to them, ‘Should I stop providing my wine that makes gods and humans happy, so that I can go to sway over the trees?’
14 “Finally, all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘You come and be king over us!’
15 “And the thornbush replied to the trees, ‘If you’re acting faithfully in anointing me king over you, come and take shelter in my shade; but if not, let fire come out of the thornbush and burn up the cedars of Lebanon.’
16 “So now, if you acted faithfully and innocently when you made Abimelech king, and if you’ve done right by Jerubbaal and his household, and have treated him as his actions deserve— 17 my father fought for you and risked his life to rescue you from Midian’s power, 18 but today you’ve risen up against my father’s household, killed his seventy sons on a single stone, and made Abimelech, his female servant’s son, king over the leaders of Shechem, because he’s your relative— 19 so if you’ve acted faithfully and innocently toward Jerubbaal and his household today, then be happy with Abimelech and let him be happy with you. 20 But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and burn up the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo; and let fire come out from the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo and burn up Abimelech.”
21 Then Jotham ran away. He fled to Beer and stayed there for fear of his brother Abimelech.
Abimelech’s monarchy fails
22 Abimelech ruled over Israel for three years. 23 Then God stirred up ill will between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem, and they acted like traitors toward Abimelech. 24 This occurred because of the violence done to Jerubbaal’s seventy sons. Their blood came back on their brother Abimelech, who killed them, and on the leaders of Shechem, who supported him when he killed his brothers. 25 As an act against him, the leaders of Shechem set ambushes on the hilltops that robbed everyone who passed by them on the road. This was reported to Abimelech.
26 Then Gaal, Ebed’s son, and his relatives came passing through Shechem, and the leaders of Shechem shifted their allegiance to him. 27 They went out into the field, cut off clusters from their vineyards, trampled them out, and had a celebration. They entered their god’s temple and ate, drank, and made fun of Abimelech. 28 Gaal, Ebed’s son, said, “Who is Abimelech, and who are we of Shechem that we ought to serve him? Didn’t this son of Jerubbaal and his deputy Zebul once serve the men of Hamor, Shechem’s father? Why should we of all people serve him? 29 If only this people were under my command! I would push Abimelech aside! I[b] would tell Abimelech, ‘Build up your army and march out for battle.’”
30 When Zebul the city’s ruler heard the words of Gaal, Ebed’s son, he became angry. 31 He sent messengers to Abimelech at Arumah[c] to say, “Watch out! Gaal, Ebed’s son, and his relatives have come to Shechem and are stirring up the city against you. 32 Now, you and the men who are with you: Get up tonight and set an ambush in the fields. 33 Then in the morning, at sunrise, rise early and rush on the city. Just as he and the men with him are marching out to face you, you can do to him whatever you wish.”
34 So Abimelech and all the men who were with him got up that night and set an ambush around Shechem in four companies. 35 When Gaal, Ebed’s son, came out and stood in the entrance of the city’s gate, Abimelech and the men with him sprang up from the ambush. 36 Gaal saw the men and said to Zebul, “Look! People are coming down from the hilltops.”
Zebul replied to him, “The shadows on the hills just look like persons to you.”
37 But Gaal spoke up again, “Look! People are coming down from Tabbur-erez, and one company is coming from the direction of Elon-meonenim.”[d]
38 Then Zebul replied to him, “Where’s all your talk now, you who said, ‘Who is Abimelech that we ought to serve him?’ Aren’t these the men you despised? Now march out and fight them!” 39 So Gaal marched out at the head of the leaders of Shechem and fought with Abimelech. 40 Abimelech routed him, and he ran away. Many fell wounded, all the way up to the entrance of the gate. 41 Afterward, Abimelech stayed in Arumah, and Zebul drove away Gaal and his relatives so they couldn’t stay in Shechem.
42 The next day, the men of Shechem went out into the fields. When it was reported to Abimelech, 43 he took his men, divided them into three companies, and set an ambush in the fields. As soon as he saw the men coming from the city, he sprang upon them and attacked them. 44 Abimelech and his company charged forward and took a position at the entrance of the city’s gate, while the other two companies charged at all those in the fields and attacked them. 45 Abimelech fought against the city that entire day. He captured the city and killed its people. Then he leveled the city and scattered salt over it.
46 When all the leaders in the Tower of Shechem heard about this, they entered the side rooms in the El-berith temple. 47 It was reported to Abimelech that all the leaders from the Tower of Shechem had gathered in one place. 48 So Abimelech and all the men who were with him went up on Mount Zalmon. He grabbed an ax, cut off a bundle of branches, and hoisted them onto his shoulder. Then he ordered the men who were with him, “Hurry up and do what you’ve seen me do!” 49 Each one of the men cut off a bundle as well and followed Abimelech. They piled them up against the side rooms and set fire to the side rooms above them. So all the people in the Tower of Shechem died too, about one thousand men and women.
50 Then Abimelech moved on to Thebez, set up camp against it, and captured it. 51 But there was a strong tower inside the city. All the men and women and all the city’s leaders had fled there, shut themselves inside, and climbed to the tower’s roof. 52 Abimelech came to the tower to storm it. But when he approached the tower’s entrance to set it on fire, 53 a woman dropped an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head and cracked his skull. 54 He quickly cried out to the servant who carried his armor, “Draw your sword and kill me. Don’t let it be said of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” So his servant stabbed him, and he died. 55 When the Israelites saw that Abimelech was dead, they all went home.
56 Thus God paid back Abimelech for the evil he had done to his father by killing his seventy brothers. 57 God also paid back the people of Shechem for their evil. The curse of Jotham, Jerubbaal’s son, had come upon them.

Abimelek

7 Când a auzit Iotam de lucrul acesta, s-a dus şi s-a aşezat pe vârful muntelui Garizim. Acolo le-a strigat spunându-le: „Ascultaţi-mă, locuitori ai Şehemului, ca şi Dumnezeu să vă asculte!
8 Copacii au plecat să ungă un rege peste ei şi i-au zis măslinului: «Domneşte peste noi!» 9 Dar măslinul le-a răspuns: «Să-mi părăsesc eu uleiul meu prin care sunt onoraţi Dumnezeu şi oamenii, şi să mă duc să stăpânesc peste copaci?»
10 Apoi copacii i-au zis smochinului: «Vino tu şi domneşte peste noi!» 11 Dar smochinul le-a răspuns: «Să-mi părăsesc eu dulceaţa mea şi roadele mele cele bune, ca să stăpânesc peste copaci?»
12 Atunci copacii i-au zis viţei-de-vie: «Vino tu şi domneşte peste noi!» 13 Dar viţa le-a răspuns: «Să-mi părăsesc eu mustul care aduce bucurie zeilor şi oamenilor şi să mă duc să stăpânesc peste copaci?»
14 În cele din urmă toţi copacii i-au zis arborelui de jujuba: «Vino tu şi domneşte peste noi!» 15 Jujuba le-a răspuns copacilor: «Dacă vreţi cu adevărat să mă ungeţi ca rege al vostru, veniţi şi adăpostiţi-vă sub umbra mea, dar dacă nu vreţi, atunci să iasă foc din jujuba şi să mistuie cedrii Libanului!»
16 Oare cu credincioşie şi în nevinovăţie aţi lucrat voi când l-aţi făcut rege pe Abimelek? V-aţi purtat voi bine cu Ierub-Baal şi familia lui? Şi oare i-aţi făcut voi după cum merita? 17 Căci tatăl meu s-a luptat pentru voi, şi-a riscat viaţa şi v-a eliberat din mâna lui Midian. 18 Dar voi v-aţi ridicat astăzi împotriva familiei tatălui meu şi i-aţi ucis cei şaptezeci de fii pe o singură piatră! Apoi l-aţi întronat ca rege peste locuitorii Şehemului pe Abimelek, fiul slujnicei lui, şi asta pentru că este unul din poporul vostru! 19 Dacă aţi lucrat astăzi cu credincioşie şi în nevinovăţie faţă de Ierub-Baal şi familia lui, atunci bucuraţi-vă de Abimelek şi Abimelek să se bucure de voi! 20 Dar dacă nu, să iasă foc din Abimelek şi să-i mistuie pe locuitorii din Şehem şi din Milo! Şi să iasă foc din locuitorii Şehemului şi din Bet-Milo ca să-l mistuie pe Abimelek!“
21 Apoi Iotam a fugit, a scăpat şi s-a dus la Beer; şi a locuit acolo, departe de faţa fratelui său Abimelek.
Dumnezeu pune capăt răutăţii lui Abimelek
22 Abimelek stăpânea peste Israel de trei ani. 23 Dumnezeu a trimis un duh rău între Abimelek şi locuitorii Şehemului şi astfel locuitorii Şehemului l-au trădat pe Abimelek, 24 pentru ca nelegiuirea săvârşită faţă de cei şaptezeci de fii ai lui Ierub-Baal să fie răzbunată şi sângele lor să cadă astfel asupra fratelui lor Abimelek, care i-a ucis, precum şi asupra locuitorilor din Şehem, care l-au ajutat pe acesta să-şi omoare fraţii. 25 Locuitorii din Şehem au pus la pândă pe vârfurile munţilor nişte oameni care-i jefuiau pe drumeţii ce treceau pe lângă ei. Lucrul acesta a fost adus la cunoştinţa lui Abimelek.
26 Gaal, fiul lui Ebed, a venit în Şehem şi locuitorii Şehemului şi-au pus încrederea în el. 27 El şi oamenii lui au ieşit la câmp, le-au cules viile şi au pus strugurii în teasc, după care au dat un ospăţ; au intrat în templul zeului lor, au mâncat, au băut şi l-au blestemat pe Abimelek. 28 Gaal, fiul lui Ebed, zicea: „Cine este Abimelek şi cine este Şehem ca să-i slujim? Nu este el fiul lui Ierub-Baal şi nu este Zebul reprezentantul lui? E mai bine să slujiţi oamenilor lui Hamor, tatăl lui Şehem! De ce să-i slujim lui Abimelek? 29 Ah, dacă ar fi cineva care să-i pună pe oamenii aceştia sub autoritatea mea! L-aş răsturna pe Abimelek! I-aş spune lui Abimelek: «Adună-ţi oştirea şi ieşi la luptă!»[f]“
30 Zebul, conducătorul cetăţii, a auzit cuvintele lui Gaal, fiul lui Ebed, şi s-a aprins de mânie. 31 A trimis pe ascuns nişte soli la Abimelek ca să-i spună: „Gaal, fiul lui Ebed, împreună cu fraţii săi au venit la Şehem şi răscoală cetatea împotriva ta! 32 Pleacă noaptea împreună cu poporul care este cu tine şi stai la pândă în câmp! 33 Apoi să te scoli dimineaţa, înainte de răsăritul soarelui şi să te năpusteşti asupra cetăţii! Când Gaal şi poporul care este cu el vor ieşi împotriva ta, să le faci după cum vei putea!“
34 Abimelek şi tot poporul care era cu el s-au sculat noaptea şi s-au pus la pândă în patru cete lângă Şehem. 35 Când Gaal, fiul lui Ebed, a ieşit şi a stat la intrarea porţii cetăţii, Abimelek şi poporul care era cu el au ieşit din ascunzătoare.
36 Când a zărit poporul, Gaal i-a zis lui Zebul:
– Văd un popor care se coboară de pe vârfurile munţilor!
Zebul i-a răspuns:
– Ceea ce vezi este umbra munţilor, nu oameni!
37 Însă Gaal a zis din nou:
– Este chiar un popor care se coboară dinspre centrul ţării, iar o ceată vine pe drumul dinspre stejarul prezicătorilor!
38 Atunci Zebul i-a zis:
– Unde îţi este acum curajul cu care ziceai: „Cine este Abimelek ca să-i slujim?“ Oare nu este acesta poporul pe care l-ai dispreţuit? Du-te acum şi luptă-te cu el!
39 Gaal a înaintat în fruntea locuitorilor din Şehem şi s-a luptat cu Abimelek. 40 Abimelek l-a urmărit, dar acesta a reuşit să fugă dinaintea lui. Mulţi oameni au căzut răpuşi până spre intrarea porţii. 41 Apoi Abimelek a rămas în Aruma, iar Zebul i-a izgonit pe Gaal şi pe rudele lui, astfel că n-au mai rămas în Şehem.
42 A doua zi, când poporul a ieşit la câmp, Abimelek a fost înştiinţat de lucrul acesta. 43 Şi-a luat oamenii, i-a împărţit în trei cete şi s-a pus la pândă în câmp. După ce s-a uitat şi a văzut că poporul ieşise din cetate, a pornit la luptă împotriva lui, atacându-l. 44 Abimelek şi cetele care erau cu el, au înaintat până la intrarea porţii cetăţii. Două din cete s-au năpustit asupra tuturor celor ce erau în câmp şi i-au ucis.
45 Abimelek s-a luptat împotriva cetăţii toată ziua. După ce au cucerit-o şi au omorât poporul care era în ea, ei au dărâmat cetatea şi au presărat-o cu sare.
46 Când au auzit acest lucru, toţi locuitorii turnului Şehemului au intrat într-un refugiu din templul lui El-Berit[g]. 47 I s-a adus la cunoştinţă lui Abimelek că toţi locuitorii turnului Şehemului s-au adăpostit acolo. 48 Abimelek şi tot poporul care era cu el s-a suit pe muntele Ţalmon. A luat în mână un topor, a tăiat o creangă din copac şi a pus-o pe umăr. Apoi le-a zis oamenilor care erau cu el: „Aţi văzut ce am făcut eu; faceţi şi voi la fel!“ 49 Fiecare bărbat din popor a tăiat câte o creangă şi l-a urmat pe Abimelek. Au aruncat crengile acelea peste refugiu şi i-au dat foc atât lui, cât şi oamenilor dinăuntru. Aşa au murit toţi locuitorii din turnul Şehemului, aproape o mie de bărbaţi şi femei.
50 După aceea Abimelek a înaintat împotriva Tebeţului, l-a împresurat şi l-a cucerit. 51 În mijlocul cetăţii era un turn fortificat. Locuitorii cetăţii, bărbaţi şi femei, fugiseră acolo, se încuiaseră înăuntru şi se suiseră pe acoperişul turnului. 52 Abimelek a ajuns până la turn şi l-a asediat. Când s-a apropiat de uşa turnului ca să-i dea foc, 53 o femeie a aruncat de pe zid piatra de sus a unei mori, care a căzut pe capul lui Abimelek şi i-a crăpat ţeasta. 54 Atunci el l-a chemat repede pe cel care-i purta armele şi i-a zis: „Scoate-ţi sabia şi omoară-mă, ca nu cumva să se zică despre mine că m-a omorât o femeie!“ Slujitorul său l-a străpuns cu sabia şi el a murit. 55 Când au văzut israeliţii că Abimelek a murit, au plecat fiecare la casele lor.
56 Astfel, Dumnezeu a întors asupra lui Abimelek răul pe care acesta îl făcuse tatălui său atunci când şi-a ucis cei şaptezeci de fraţi. 57 Tot răul făcut de locuitorii din Şehem, Dumnezeu l-a întors asupra capului lor. În acest fel a venit asupra lor blestemul lui Iotam, fiul lui Ierub-Baal.

9 Now Abimelech son of Jerubbaal (Gideon) went to Shechem to his mother’s kinsmen and said to them and to the whole clan of his mother’s family,
2 Say, I pray you, in the hearing of all the men of Shechem, Which is better for you: that all seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal reign over you, or that one man rule over you? Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.
3 And his mother’s kinsmen spoke all these words concerning him in the hearing of all the men of Shechem, and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, He is our brother.
4 And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith, with which Abimelech hired worthless and foolhardy men who followed him.
5 And he went to his father’s house at Ophrah and slew his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone. But Jotham, the youngest son of Jerubbaal, was left, for he hid himself.
6 And all the men of Shechem gathered together and all of Beth-millo, and they went and made Abimelech king by the oak (terebinth) of the pillar at Shechem.
7 When it was told to Jotham, he went and stood at the top of Mount Gerizim and shouted to them, Hear me, men of Shechem, that God may hear you.
8 One time the trees went forth to anoint a king over them, and they said to the olive tree, Reign over us.
9 But the olive tree said to them, Should I leave my fatness, by which God and man are honored, and go to wave over the trees?
10 Then the trees said to the fig tree, You come and reign over us.
11 But the fig tree said to them, Should I leave my sweetness and my good fruit and go to wave over the trees?
12 Then the trees said to the vine (grapevine), You come and reign over us.
13 And the vine (grapevine) replied, Should I leave my new wine, which rejoices God and man, and go to wave over the trees?
14 Then all the trees said to the bramble, You come and reign over us.
15 And the bramble said to the trees, If in good faith you are anointing me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, let fire come out of the bramble and devour the cedars of Lebanon.
16 Now therefore, if you acted sincerely and honorably when you made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house and have done to him as his deeds deserved—
17 For my father fought for you, jeopardized his life, and rescued you from the hand of Midian;
18 And you have risen up against my father’s house this day and have slain his sons, seventy men, on one stone and have made Abimelech, son of his maidservant, king over the people of Shechem because he is your kinsman—
19 If you then have acted sincerely and honorably with Jerubbaal and his house this day, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you;
20 But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and devour the people of Shechem and Beth-millo, and let fire come out from the people of Shechem and Beth-millo and devour Abimelech.
21 And Jotham ran away and fled, and went to Beer and dwelt there for fear of Abimelech his brother.
22 Abimelech reigned three years over Israel.
23 And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem, and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech,
24 That the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and that their blood might be laid upon Abimelech their brother, who slew them, and upon the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to slay his brothers.
25 And the men of Shechem set men in ambush against [Abimelech] on the mountaintops, and they robbed all who passed by them along that way; and it was told to Abimelech.
26 And Gaal son of Ebed came with his kinsmen and moved into Shechem, and the men of Shechem put confidence in him.
27 And they went out into the field, gathered their vineyard fruits and trod them, and held a festival; and going into the house of their god, they ate and drank and cursed Abimelech.
28 Gaal son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who are we of Shechem, that we should serve him? Were not the son of Jerubbaal and Zebul, his officer, servants of the men of Hamor the father and founder of Shechem? Then why should we serve him?
29 Would that this people were under my hand! Then would I remove Abimelech and say to him, Increase your army and come out.
30 When Zebul the city’s mayor heard the words of Gaal son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.
31 And he sent messengers to Abimelech slyly, saying, Behold, Gaal son of Ebed and his kinsmen have come to Shechem; and behold, they stir up the city to rise against you.
32 Now therefore, rise up by night, you and the men with you, and lie in wait in the field.
33 Then in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, rise early and set upon the city; and when Gaal and the men with him come out against you, do to them as opportunity permits.
34 And Abimelech rose up by night, and all the men with him, and they laid in wait against Shechem in four companies.
35 And Gaal son of Ebed came out and stood in the entrance of the city’s gate. Then Abimelech and the men with him rose up from ambush.
36 When Gaal saw the men, he said to Zebul, Look, men are coming down from the mountaintops! Zebul said to him, The shadow of the mountains looks to you like men.
37 And Gaal spoke again and said, See, men are coming down from the center of the land, and one company is coming from the direction of the oak of Meonenim [the sorcerers].
38 Then said Zebul to Gaal, Where is your [big] mouth now, you who said, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? Are not these the men whom you have despised? Go out now and fight with them.
39 And Gaal went out ahead of the men of Shechem and fought with Abimelech.
40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him; and many fell wounded—even to the entrance of the gate.
41 And Abimelech lodged at Arumah, and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his kinsmen so that they could not live in Shechem.
42 The next day the men went out into the fields, and Abimelech was told.
43 He took his men and divided them into three companies and laid in wait in the field; and he looked and behold, the people were coming out of the city. And he rose up against them and smote them.
44 And Abimelech and the company with him rushed forward and stood in the entrance of the city’s gate, while the two other companies rushed upon all who were in the field and slew them.
45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day. He took the city and slew the people who were in it. He demolished the city and [a]sowed it with salt.
46 And when all the men of the Tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered the stronghold of the house of El-berith [the god of Berith].
47 Abimelech was told that all the people of the Tower of Shechem were gathered together.
48 And Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the men with him; and Abimelech took an ax in his hand and cut down a bundle of brush, picked it up, and laid it on his shoulder. And he said to the men with him, What you have seen me do, make haste to do also.
49 So each of the men cut down his bundle and following Abimelech put it against the stronghold and set [the stronghold] on fire over the people in it, so that all the people of the Tower of Shechem also died, about 1,000 men and women.
50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez and encamped against Thebez and took it.
51 But there was a strong tower in the city, and all the people of the city—men and women—fled to it, shut themselves in, and went to the roof of the tower.
52 And Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it and drew near the door of the tower to burn it with fire.
53 But a certain woman cast an upper millstone [down] upon Abimelech’s head and broke his skull.
54 Then he called hastily to the young man, his armor-bearer, and said to him, Draw your sword and slay me, so that men may not say of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.
55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed each man to his home.
56 Thus God repaid the wickedness of Abimelech which he had done to his father [Gideon] by slaying his seventy brothers;
57 And all the wickedness of the men of Shechem God repaid upon their heads and caused to come upon them the curse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal.(A)

- Judges 9:45 This strewing of salt over Shechem was not intended (even if Abimelech had been able to supply enough salt) actually to make the ground unfruitful; but it was a symbol of perpetual desolation, and a sign that Shechem never would be rebuilt. However, such a forecast of a city’s fate made by a true prophet of God, or by the Lord Himself, was one thing. This forecast, symbolized by the wicked usurper Abimelech, was quite another thing. For Shechem was later rebuilt (I Kings 12:25), and so was denounced Jericho (I Kings 16:34; see also Josh. 6). But this is not true of Samaria (Mic. 1:6), or Nineveh (Nah. 1:9-12), or Ashkelon (Zeph. 2:4), or the cities of Edom (Ezek. 35:9), or Tyre (Ezek. 26:3, 14), or Chorazin, or Bethsaida, or Capernaum (Matt. 11:20, 21, 23). That these cities, as such, would never be rebuilt permanently was foretold on the authority and by order of God Himself. “Sky and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away” (Matt. 24:35).

Abimelek
9 Abimelek(A) son of Jerub-Baal(B) went to his mother’s brothers in Shechem and said to them and to all his mother’s clan, 2 “Ask all the citizens of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you: to have all seventy of Jerub-Baal’s sons rule over you, or just one man?’ Remember, I am your flesh and blood.(C)”
3 When the brothers repeated all this to the citizens of Shechem, they were inclined to follow Abimelek, for they said, “He is related to us.” 4 They gave him seventy shekels[a] of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith,(D) and Abimelek used it to hire reckless scoundrels,(E) who became his followers. 5 He went to his father’s home in Ophrah and on one stone murdered his seventy brothers,(F) the sons of Jerub-Baal. But Jotham,(G) the youngest son of Jerub-Baal, escaped by hiding.(H) 6 Then all the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo(I) gathered beside the great tree(J) at the pillar in Shechem to crown Abimelek king.
7 When Jotham(K) was told about this, he climbed up on the top of Mount Gerizim(L) and shouted to them, “Listen to me, citizens of Shechem, so that God may listen to you. 8 One day the trees went out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Be our king.’
9 “But the olive tree answered, ‘Should I give up my oil, by which both gods and humans are honored, to hold sway over the trees?’
10 “Next, the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and be our king.’
11 “But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I give up my fruit, so good and sweet, to hold sway over the trees?’
12 “Then the trees said to the vine, ‘Come and be our king.’
13 “But the vine answered, ‘Should I give up my wine,(M) which cheers both gods and humans, to hold sway over the trees?’
14 “Finally all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘Come and be our king.’
15 “The thornbush said to the trees, ‘If you really want to anoint me king over you, come and take refuge in my shade;(N) but if not, then let fire come out(O) of the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon!’(P)
16 “Have you acted honorably and in good faith by making Abimelek king? Have you been fair to Jerub-Baal and his family? Have you treated him as he deserves? 17 Remember that my father fought for you and risked(Q) his life to rescue you from the hand of Midian. 18 But today you have revolted against my father’s family. You have murdered his seventy sons(R) on a single stone and have made Abimelek, the son of his female slave, king over the citizens of Shechem because he is related to you. 19 So have you acted honorably and in good faith toward Jerub-Baal and his family today?(S) If you have, may Abimelek be your joy, and may you be his, too! 20 But if you have not, let fire come out(T) from Abimelek and consume you, the citizens of Shechem(U) and Beth Millo,(V) and let fire come out from you, the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo, and consume Abimelek!”
21 Then Jotham(W) fled, escaping to Beer,(X) and he lived there because he was afraid of his brother Abimelek.
22 After Abimelek had governed Israel three years, 23 God stirred up animosity(Y) between Abimelek and the citizens of Shechem so that they acted treacherously against Abimelek. 24 God did this in order that the crime against Jerub-Baal’s seventy sons,(Z) the shedding(AA) of their blood, might be avenged(AB) on their brother Abimelek and on the citizens of Shechem, who had helped him(AC) murder his brothers. 25 In opposition to him these citizens of Shechem set men on the hilltops to ambush and rob everyone who passed by, and this was reported to Abimelek.
26 Now Gaal son of Ebed(AD) moved with his clan into Shechem, and its citizens put their confidence in him. 27 After they had gone out into the fields and gathered the grapes and trodden(AE) them, they held a festival in the temple of their god.(AF) While they were eating and drinking, they cursed Abimelek. 28 Then Gaal son of Ebed(AG) said, “Who(AH) is Abimelek, and why should we Shechemites be subject to him? Isn’t he Jerub-Baal’s son, and isn’t Zebul his deputy? Serve the family of Hamor,(AI) Shechem’s father! Why should we serve Abimelek? 29 If only this people were under my command!(AJ) Then I would get rid of him. I would say to Abimelek, ‘Call out your whole army!’”[b](AK)
30 When Zebul the governor of the city heard what Gaal son of Ebed said, he was very angry. 31 Under cover he sent messengers to Abimelek, saying, “Gaal son of Ebed and his clan have come to Shechem and are stirring up the city against you. 32 Now then, during the night you and your men should come and lie in wait(AL) in the fields. 33 In the morning at sunrise, advance against the city. When Gaal and his men come out against you, seize the opportunity to attack them.(AM)”
34 So Abimelek and all his troops set out by night and took up concealed positions near Shechem in four companies. 35 Now Gaal son of Ebed had gone out and was standing at the entrance of the city gate(AN) just as Abimelek and his troops came out from their hiding place.(AO)
36 When Gaal saw them, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains!”
Zebul replied, “You mistake the shadows of the mountains for men.”
37 But Gaal spoke up again: “Look, people are coming down from the central hill,[c] and a company is coming from the direction of the diviners’ tree.”
38 Then Zebul said to him, “Where is your big talk now, you who said, ‘Who is Abimelek that we should be subject to him?’ Aren’t these the men you ridiculed?(AP) Go out and fight them!”
39 So Gaal led out[d] the citizens of Shechem and fought Abimelek. 40 Abimelek chased him all the way to the entrance of the gate, and many were killed as they fled. 41 Then Abimelek stayed in Arumah, and Zebul drove Gaal and his clan out of Shechem.
42 The next day the people of Shechem went out to the fields, and this was reported to Abimelek. 43 So he took his men, divided them into three companies(AQ) and set an ambush(AR) in the fields. When he saw the people coming out of the city, he rose to attack them. 44 Abimelek and the companies with him rushed forward to a position at the entrance of the city gate. Then two companies attacked those in the fields and struck them down. 45 All that day Abimelek pressed his attack against the city until he had captured it and killed its people. Then he destroyed the city(AS) and scattered salt(AT) over it.
46 On hearing this, the citizens in the tower of Shechem went into the stronghold of the temple(AU) of El-Berith. 47 When Abimelek heard that they had assembled there, 48 he and all his men went up Mount Zalmon.(AV) He took an ax and cut off some branches, which he lifted to his shoulders. He ordered the men with him, “Quick! Do what you have seen me do!” 49 So all the men cut branches and followed Abimelek. They piled them against the stronghold and set it on fire with the people still inside. So all the people in the tower of Shechem, about a thousand men and women, also died.
50 Next Abimelek went to Thebez(AW) and besieged it and captured it. 51 Inside the city, however, was a strong tower, to which all the men and women—all the people of the city—had fled. They had locked themselves in and climbed up on the tower roof. 52 Abimelek went to the tower and attacked it. But as he approached the entrance to the tower to set it on fire, 53 a woman dropped an upper millstone on his head and cracked his skull.(AX)
54 Hurriedly he called to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and kill me,(AY) so that they can’t say, ‘A woman killed him.’” So his servant ran him through, and he died. 55 When the Israelites saw that Abimelek was dead, they went home.
56 Thus God repaid the wickedness that Abimelek had done to his father by murdering his seventy brothers. 57 God also made the people of Shechem pay for all their wickedness.(AZ) The curse of Jotham(BA) son of Jerub-Baal came on them.
