Judges 9:24-26
EasyEnglish Bible
24 God did this to punish Abimelech because he had killed his brothers, Gideon's 70 sons. The leaders of Shechem were also guilty for their murder, because they had helped Abimelech.
25 The leaders of Shechem no longer obeyed Abimelech. They sent men to hide in the hills near Shechem. Those men robbed everyone who travelled on that road. But someone told Abimelech about this.
26 Ebed's son Gaal went to live in Shechem with his brothers. The leaders of Shechem started to trust Gaal as their leader.

New International Version
24 God did this in order that the crime against Jerub-Baal’s seventy sons,(A) the shedding(B) of their blood, might be avenged(C) on their brother Abimelek and on the citizens of Shechem, who had helped him(D) murder his brothers. 25 In opposition to him these citizens of Shechem set men on the hilltops to ambush and rob everyone who passed by, and this was reported to Abimelek.
26 Now Gaal son of Ebed(E) moved with his clan into Shechem, and its citizens put their confidence in him.
