5 In that day Debbora and Barac son of Abinoem sung, and said:
2 O you of Israel, that have willingly offered your lives to danger, bless the Lord.
3 Hear, O ye kings, give ear, ye princes: It is I, it is I, that will sing to the Lord, I will sing to the Lord the God of Israel.
4 O Lord, when thou wentest out of Seir, and passedst by the regions of Edom, the earth trembled, and the heavens dropped water.
5 The mountains melted before the face of the Lord, and Sinai before the face of the Lord the God of Israel.
6 In the days of Samgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jahel the paths rested: and they that went by them, walked through by-ways.
7 The valiant men ceased, and rested in Israel: until Debbora arose, a mother arose in Israel.
8 The Lord chose new wars, and he himself overthrew the gates of the enemies: a shield and spear was not seen among forty thousand of Israel.
9 My heart loveth the princes of Israel: O you that of your own good will offered yourselves to danger, bless the Lord.
10 Speak, you that ride upon fair asses, and you that sit in judgment, and walk in the way.
11 Where the chariots were dashed together, and the army of the enemies was choked, there let the justices of the Lord be rehearsed, and his clemency towards the brave men of Israel: then the people of the Lord went down to the gates, and obtained the sovereignty.
12 Arise, arise, O Debbora, arise, arise, and utter a canticle. Arise, Barac, and take hold of thy captives, O son of Abinoem.
13 The remnants of the people are saved, the Lord hath fought among the valiant ones.
14 Out of Ephraim he destroyed them into Amalec, and after him out of Benjamin into thy people, O Amalec: Out of Machir there came down princes, and out of Zabulon they that led the army to fight.
15 The captains of Issachar were with Debbora, and followed the steps of Barac, who exposed himself to danger, as one going headlong, and into a pit. Ruben being divided against himself, there was found a strife of courageous men.
16 Why dwellest thou between two borders, that thou mayest hear the bleatings of the flocks? Ruben being divided against himself, there was found a strife of courageous men.
17 Galaad rested beyond the Jordan, and Dan applied himself to ships: Aser dwelt on the sea shore, and abode in the havens.
18 But Zabulon and Nephtali offered their lives to death in the region of Merome.
19 The kings came and fought, the kings of Chanaan fought in Thanach by the waters of Mageddo, and yet they took no spoils.
20 War from heaven was made against them, the stars remaining in their order and courses fought against Sisara.
21 The torrent of Cison dragged their carcasses, the torrent of Cadumim, the torrent of Cisoii: tread thou, my soul, upon the strong ones.
22 The hoofs of the horses were broken whilst the stoutest of the enemies fled amain, and fell headlong down.
23 Curse ye the land of Meroz, said the angel of the Lord: curse the inhabitants thereof, because they came not to the help of the Lord, to help his most valiant men.
24 Blessed among women be Jahel the wife of Haber the Cinite, and blessed be she in her tent.
25 He asked her water and she gave him milk, and offered him butter in a dish fit for princes.
26 She put her left hand to the nail, and her right hand to the workman's hammer, and she struck Sisara, seeking in his head a place for the wound, and strongly piercing through his temples.
27 At her feet he fell: he fainted, and he died: he rolled before her feet, and he lay lifeless and wretched.
28 His mother looked out at a window, and howled: and she spoke from the dining room: Why is his chariot so long in coming back? Why are the feet of his horses so slow?
29 One that was wiser than the rest of his wives, returned this answer to her mother in law:
30 Perhaps he is now dividing the spoils, and the fairest of the women is chosen out for him: garments of divers colours are given to Sisara for his prey, and furniture of different kinds is heaped together to adorn the necks.
31 So let all thy enemies perish, O Lord: but let them that love thee shine, as the sun shineth in his rising.
32 And the land rested for forty years.

5 (A) Den dagen sjöng Debora och Barak, Abinoams son, denna sång:
2 När härförare anför i Israel,
när folket villigt offrar sig
– lova Herren!
3 Hör, ni kungar! Lyssna, ni furstar!
Jag vill sjunga, sjunga till Herren,
jag vill lovsjunga Herren,
Israels Gud.
4 (B) Herre, när du drog ut från Seir,
när du gick fram från Edoms land,
då bävade jorden,
då strömmade det från himlen,
då strömmade vatten från molnen.
5 Bergen skalv inför Herrens ansikte,
Sinai inför Herrens, Israels Guds,
ansikte.
6 (C) I Shamgars dagar, Anats sons,
i Jaels dagar låg vägarna öde.
Vandrarna måste gå omvägar.
7 (D) Inga ledare[a] fanns, inga i Israel
förrän jag, Debora, trädde fram,
trädde fram som en moder i Israel.
8 (E) Man valde sig nya gudar,
då nådde striden ända till portarna.
Men varken sköld eller spjut
fanns att se
bland Israels fyrtiotusen.
9 Mitt hjärta tillhör Israels furstar
och dem bland folket
som villigt offrade sig.
Lova Herren!
10 Ni som rider på vita åsnor,
ni som sitter hemma på mattor
och ni som vandrar på vägen,
sjung![b]
11 När man sjungande
delar byte mellan vattenhoarna
lovprisar man Herrens
rättfärdiga gärningar,
hans styres rättfärdiga gärningar
i Israel.
Då drog Herrens folk ner
till portarna.
12 Vakna, vakna, Debora!
Vakna, vakna, sjung din sång!
Res dig, Barak! Ta dig fångar,
du Abinoams son!
13 Då satte folkets överlevare
de tappra till anförare,
Herren satte mig
till anförare över hjältarna.
14 (F) Från Efraim kom män
med rötter i Amalek.
Benjamin följde dig
med dina skaror.
Från Makir kom furstar ner
och från Sebulon
män med ledarstav.
15 Furstarna i Isaskar
slöt sig till Debora,
och liksom Isaskar
gjorde också Barak,
ner i dalen skyndade man
i hans spår.
Bland Rubens ätter
höll man stora rådslag.
16 Varför satt du kvar bland dina fållor
och lyssnade till flöjtspel
vid hjordarna?

17 (G) Gilead stannade
på andra sidan Jordan.
Och Dan,
varför dröjde han vid skeppen?
Asher satt kvar vid havets strand,
vid sina vikar stannade han.
18 Men Sebulon var ett folk
som föraktade döden,
likaså Naftali på slagfältets höjder.
19 Kungar drog fram och stred,
då stred Kanaans kungar
vid Taanak nära Megiddos vatten,
men silverbyte vann de inte.
20 (H) Från himlen fördes strid,
stjärnorna stred från sina banor
mot Sisera.
21 (I) Floden Kishon svepte bort dem,
urtidsfloden, floden Kishon.
Framåt, min själ, med kraft!
22 Då stampade hästarnas hovar,
hans starka hingstar
jagade framåt, framåt.
23 Förbanna Meros,
säger Herrens ängel,
förbanna, ja,
förbanna dess invånare
eftersom de inte kom
till Herrens hjälp,
till Herrens hjälp bland hjältarna.
24 (J) Välsignad framför andra kvinnor
är Jael, keniten Hebers hustru,
välsignad framför alla kvinnor i tält.
25 Vatten begärde han,
hon gav honom mjölk,
bar fram gräddmjölk i högtidsskålen.
26 Hon räckte sin hand efter tältpluggen,
sin högra hand efter hammaren.
Med den slog hon Sisera
och krossade hans huvud,
spräckte hans tinning
och genomborrade den.
27 Vid hennes fötter kröp han ihop,
låg och blev liggande.

blickade Siseras mor,
hon ropade gällt genom gallret:
”Varför dröjer hans vagn?

och själv gav hon sig samma svar:
30 ”Säkert fick de byte och delar det nu,
en flicka[c] eller två åt varje man,
färggrant byte för Siseras räkning,
färggrant byte av brokiga tyger,
en brokig duk eller två
för de fångnas halsar.”
31 (K) Så ska alla dina fiender förgås,
Herre.
Men de som älskar honom
ska bli som solen
när den går upp i sin kraft.
Och landet hade nu ro i fyrtio år.

2 “When the princes in Israel take the lead,
when the people willingly offer(D) themselves—
praise the Lord!(E)
3 “Hear this, you kings! Listen, you rulers!
I, even I, will sing to[a] the Lord;(F)
I will praise the Lord, the God of Israel, in song.(G)
4 “When you, Lord, went out(H) from Seir,(I)
when you marched from the land of Edom,
the earth shook,(J) the heavens poured,
the clouds poured down water.(K)
5 The mountains quaked(L) before the Lord, the One of Sinai,
before the Lord, the God of Israel.
6 “In the days of Shamgar son of Anath,(M)
in the days of Jael,(N) the highways(O) were abandoned;
travelers took to winding paths.(P)
7 Villagers in Israel would not fight;
they held back until I, Deborah,(Q) arose,
until I arose, a mother in Israel.
8 God chose new leaders(R)
when war came to the city gates,(S)
but not a shield or spear(T) was seen
among forty thousand in Israel.
9 My heart is with Israel’s princes,
with the willing volunteers(U) among the people.
Praise the Lord!
10 “You who ride on white donkeys,(V)
sitting on your saddle blankets,
and you who walk along the road,
consider 11 the voice of the singers[b] at the watering places.
They recite the victories(W) of the Lord,
the victories of his villagers in Israel.
“Then the people of the Lord
went down to the city gates.(X)
12 ‘Wake up,(Y) wake up, Deborah!(Z)
Wake up, wake up, break out in song!
Arise, Barak!(AA)
Take captive your captives,(AB) son of Abinoam.’
13 “The remnant of the nobles came down;
the people of the Lord came down to me against the mighty.
14 Some came from Ephraim,(AC) whose roots were in Amalek;(AD)
Benjamin(AE) was with the people who followed you.
From Makir(AF) captains came down,
from Zebulun those who bear a commander’s[c] staff.
15 The princes of Issachar(AG) were with Deborah;(AH)
yes, Issachar was with Barak,(AI)
sent under his command into the valley.
In the districts of Reuben
there was much searching of heart.
16 Why did you stay among the sheep pens[d](AJ)
to hear the whistling for the flocks?(AK)

17 Gilead(AL) stayed beyond the Jordan.
And Dan, why did he linger by the ships?
Asher(AM) remained on the coast(AN)
and stayed in his coves.
18 The people of Zebulun(AO) risked their very lives;
so did Naphtali(AP) on the terraced fields.(AQ)
19 “Kings came(AR), they fought,
the kings of Canaan fought.
At Taanach, by the waters of Megiddo,(AS)
they took no plunder of silver.(AT)
20 From the heavens(AU) the stars fought,
from their courses they fought against Sisera.
21 The river Kishon(AV) swept them away,
the age-old river, the river Kishon.
March on, my soul; be strong!(AW)
22 Then thundered the horses’ hooves—
galloping, galloping go his mighty steeds.(AX)
23 ‘Curse Meroz,’ said the angel of the Lord.
‘Curse its people bitterly,
because they did not come to help the Lord,
to help the Lord against the mighty.’
24 “Most blessed of women(AY) be Jael,(AZ)
the wife of Heber the Kenite,(BA)
most blessed of tent-dwelling women.
25 He asked for water, and she gave him milk;(BB)
in a bowl fit for nobles she brought him curdled milk.
26 Her hand reached for the tent peg,
her right hand for the workman’s hammer.
She struck Sisera, she crushed his head,
she shattered and pierced his temple.(BC)
27 At her feet he sank,
he fell; there he lay.
At her feet he sank, he fell;
where he sank, there he fell—dead(BD).
28 “Through the window(BE) peered Sisera’s mother;
behind the lattice she cried out,(BF)
‘Why is his chariot so long in coming?
Why is the clatter of his chariots delayed?’
29 The wisest of her ladies answer her;
indeed, she keeps saying to herself,
30 ‘Are they not finding and dividing the spoils:(BG)
a woman or two for each man,
colorful garments as plunder for Sisera,
colorful garments embroidered,
highly embroidered garments(BH) for my neck—
all this as plunder?(BI)’
31 “So may all your enemies perish,(BJ) Lord!
But may all who love you be like the sun(BK)
when it rises in its strength.”(BL)
Then the land had peace(BM) forty years.
