The Nations Remaining in the Land

3 Now these are (A)the nations which the Lord left, that He might test Israel by them, that is, all who had not [a]known any of the wars in Canaan 2 (this was only so that the generations of the children of Israel might be taught to know war, at least those who had not formerly known it), 3 namely, (B)five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who dwelt in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath. 4 And they were left, that He might test Israel by them, to [b]know whether they would obey the commandments of the Lord, which He had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

5 (C)Thus the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 6 And (D)they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons; and they served their gods.

Othniel

7 So the children of Israel did (E)evil in the sight of the Lord. They (F)forgot the Lord their God, and served the Baals and [c]Asherahs. 8 Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and He (G)sold them into the hand of (H)Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Cushan-Rishathaim eight years. 9 When the children of Israel (I)cried out to the Lord, the Lord (J)raised up a deliverer for the children of Israel, who delivered them: (K)Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. 10 (L)The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the Lord delivered Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed over Cushan-Rishathaim. 11 So the land had rest for forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

Ehud

12 (M)And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord. So the Lord strengthened (N)Eglon king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord. 13 Then he gathered to himself the people of Ammon and (O)Amalek, went and [d]defeated Israel, and took possession of (P)the City of Palms. 14 So the children of Israel (Q)served Eglon king of Moab eighteen years.

15 But when the children of Israel (R)cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for them: Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a (S)left-handed man. By him the children of Israel sent tribute to Eglon king of Moab. 16 Now Ehud made himself a dagger (it was double-edged and a cubit in length) and fastened it under his clothes on his right thigh. 17 So he brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. (Now Eglon was a very fat man.) 18 And when he had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who had carried the tribute. 19 But he himself turned back (T)from the [e]stone images that were at Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.”

He said, “Keep silence!” And all who attended him went out from him.

20 So Ehud came to him (now he was sitting upstairs in his cool private chamber). Then Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you.” So he arose from his seat. 21 Then Ehud reached with his left hand, took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly. 22 Even the [f]hilt went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the dagger out of his belly; and his entrails came out. 23 Then Ehud went out through the porch and shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them.

24 When he had gone out, [g]Eglon’s servants came to look, and to their surprise, the doors of the upper room were locked. So they said, “He is probably (U)attending[h] to his needs in the cool chamber.” 25 So they waited till they were (V)embarrassed, and still he had not opened the doors of the upper room. Therefore they took the key and opened them. And there was their master, fallen dead on the floor.

26 But Ehud had escaped while they delayed, and passed beyond the [i]stone images and escaped to Seirah. 27 And it happened, when he arrived, that (W)he blew the trumpet in the (X)mountains of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mountains; and [j]he led them. 28 Then he said to them, “Follow me, for (Y)the Lord has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they went down after him, seized the (Z)fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross over. 29 And at that time they killed about ten thousand men of Moab, all stout men of valor; not a man escaped. 30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And (AA)the land had rest for eighty years.

Shamgar

31 After him was (AB)Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed six hundred men of the Philistines (AC)with an ox goad; (AD)and he also delivered (AE)Israel.

3 Estas, pues, son las naciones que dejó Jehová para probar con ellas a Israel, a todos aquellos que no habían conocido todas las guerras de Canaán; 2 solamente para que el linaje de los hijos de Israel conociese la guerra, para que la enseñasen a los que antes no la habían conocido: 3 los cinco príncipes de los filisteos, todos los cananeos, los sidonios, y los heveos que habitaban en el monte Líbano, desde el monte de Baal-hermón hasta llegar a Hamat. 4 Y fueron para probar con ellos a Israel, para saber si obedecerían a los mandamientos de Jehová, que él había dado a sus padres por mano de Moisés. 5 Así los hijos de Israel habitaban entre los cananeos, heteos, amorreos, ferezeos, heveos y jebuseos. 6 Y tomaron de sus hijas por mujeres, y dieron sus hijas a los hijos de ellos, y sirvieron a sus dioses.

Otoniel liberta a Israel de Cusan-risataim

7 Hicieron, pues, los hijos de Israel lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, y olvidaron a Jehová su Dios, y sirvieron a los baales y a las imágenes de Asera. 8 Y la ira de Jehová se encendió contra Israel, y los vendió en manos de Cusan-risataim rey de Mesopotamia; y sirvieron los hijos de Israel a Cusan-risataim ocho años. 9 Entonces clamaron los hijos de Israel a Jehová; y Jehová levantó un libertador a los hijos de Israel y los libró; esto es, a Otoniel hijo de Cenaz, hermano menor de Caleb. 10 Y el Espíritu de Jehová vino sobre él, y juzgó a Israel, y salió a batalla, y Jehová entregó en su mano a Cusan-risataim rey de Siria, y prevaleció su mano contra Cusan-risataim. 11 Y reposó la tierra cuarenta años; y murió Otoniel hijo de Cenaz.

Aod liberta a Israel de Moab

12 Volvieron los hijos de Israel a hacer lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová; y Jehová fortaleció a Eglón rey de Moab contra Israel, por cuanto habían hecho lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová. 13 Este juntó consigo a los hijos de Amón y de Amalec, y vino e hirió a Israel, y tomó la ciudad de las palmeras. 14 Y sirvieron los hijos de Israel a Eglón rey de los moabitas dieciocho años.

15 Y clamaron los hijos de Israel a Jehová; y Jehová les levantó un libertador, a Aod hijo de Gera, benjamita, el cual era zurdo. 26 Mas entre tanto que ellos se detuvieron, Aod escapó, y pasando los ídolos, se puso a salvo en Seirat. 27 Y cuando había entrado, tocó el cuerno en el monte de Efraín, y los hijos de Israel descendieron con él del monte, y él iba delante de ellos. 28 Entonces él les dijo: Seguidme, porque Jehová ha entregado a vuestros enemigos los moabitas en vuestras manos. Y descendieron en pos de él, y tomaron los vados del Jordán a Moab, y no dejaron pasar a ninguno. 29 Y en aquel tiempo mataron de los moabitas como diez mil hombres, todos valientes y todos hombres de guerra; no escapó ninguno. 30 Así fue subyugado Moab aquel día bajo la mano de Israel; y reposó la tierra ochenta años.

Samgar liberta a Israel de los filisteos

31 Después de él fue Samgar hijo de Anat, el cual mató a seiscientos hombres de los filisteos con una aguijada de bueyes; y él también salvó a Israel.

The Land That Remains Unconquered

3 The following are the nations that the Lord left in place in order to test all the Israelites who had not experienced all the wars in Canaan. 2 (This was done so that the generations of Israelites who did not know war would learn how to wage war.) 3 Those who remained were the five serens[a] of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who dwell in the mountains of Lebanon from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath.[b] 4 They remained there to test Israel, in order to know whether or not they would obey the commands of the Lord, which he commanded to their fathers by the hand of Moses.

The Cycles Begin
The First Judge: Othniel Versus the Arameans

5 The people of Israel lived in the midst of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 6 They took the daughters of these peoples as wives for themselves, and they gave their own daughters to the other peoples’ sons. They also served their gods.

7 Then the people of Israel did evil in the eyes of the Lord. They forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and the Asherahs.[c] 8 The anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan Rishathaim, who was the king of Aram Naharaim.[d] The Israelites served Cushan Rishathaim for eight years. 9 Then the people of Israel cried out to the Lord, and the Lord raised up a deliverer for the Israelites, who saved them.

The deliverer was Othniel, son of Kenaz, the youngest brother of Caleb.[e] 10 The Spirit of the Lord was upon him. He served as Israel’s judge. When he went out to wage war, the Lord gave Cushan Rishathaim, the king of Aram, into his hand, and his hand was strong against Cushan Rishathaim. 11 Then the land was quiet for forty years, and Othniel son of Kenaz died.

The Second Judge: Ehud Versus the Moabites

12 Again the people of Israel committed evil in the eyes of the Lord, so the Lord gave Eglon king of Moab power over Israel because they had committed evil in the eyes of the Lord.

13 Eglon took Ammonites and Amalekites along with him. He advanced and attacked Israel and took possession of the City of Palms. 14 So the people of Israel served Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years.

15 Again the people of Israel called out to the Lord, and the Lord raised up a deliverer for them. The deliverer was Ehud son of Gera, a Benjaminite, who was left-handed.[f]

The Israelites sent him with a tribute payment for Eglon king of Moab. 16 Ehud made a double-edged sword for himself, about eighteen inches long,[g] and he strapped it under his clothing on his right thigh.

17 Ehud presented the tribute payment to Eglon king of Moab, who was a very fat man. 18 After Ehud had presented the tribute payment, he sent the men who had delivered the tribute on their way. 19 But after he himself had passed the carved images that were at Gilgal, Ehud turned back and told the king, “I have a secret for you, O king!”

The king said, “Quiet, everyone,” so all his attendants left the room.

20 Ehud approached Eglon as Eglon was sitting in the cool upper chamber, all alone. Ehud said, “I have something from God for you.” So Eglon stood up from the throne. 21 Ehud reached out his left hand and took the sword that was on his right thigh and drove it into Eglon’s belly. 22 As the hilt went in after the blade, Eglon’s fat closed behind the blade. Ehud did not draw the sword out from Eglon’s belly, and the contents of his bowels came out. 23 Ehud then went out to the vestibule,[h] shut the doors of the upper chamber behind him, and locked them. 24 Then off he went!

When Eglon’s servants came back, they were surprised to see that the doors of the upper chamber were locked. They said, “He must be using the toilet.”[i] 25 They waited until the delay became embarrassing, but no one opened the doors to the upper chamber. Finally they took the key and opened the door. And there he was. Their master was lying on the ground—dead!

26 While they delayed, Ehud had escaped. He passed by the carved images and escaped to Seirah. 27 When he arrived, ram’s horns were sounded throughout the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites marched down from the hill country with Ehud leading the way. 28 He said to them, “Follow me, because the Lord has given your enemies, the Moabites, into your hands.” So they pursued them, captured the fords of the Jordan opposite Moab, and let no one cross. 29 At this time they struck down about ten thousand men of Moab, every one robust, each one a powerful warrior. Not one escaped. 30 This is how Moab was humbled on that day under the hand of Israel, and the land was quiet for eighty years.

The Third Judge: Shamgar Versus the Philistines

31 After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath. He struck down six hundred Philistines with an ox goad. He too delivered Israel.

  1. Judges 3:3 The word seren is used only for the rulers of the five Philistine city states. It may be related to the Greek word tyrant, an autocratic ruler of a city state. Seren is a title like pharaoh or czar, which is applied to one specific class of rulers. Since this is a unique title, the translation uses the transliteration seren rather than the traditional rendering lord.

  4. Judges 3:8 Aram of the Two Rivers is in northern Syria, along the tributaries of the Euphrates.
  5. Judges 3:9 It is not certain whether Othniel or Kenaz was Caleb’s brother. It seems more likely that it was Kenaz.
  6. Judges 3:15 Literally bound in his right hand. Possibly the term refers to a handicap, but it likely simply refers to left-handedness.
  7. Judges 3:16 The Hebrew word used here is not the usual word for the eighteen-inch cubit, so this weapon may have been fifteen inches long, or even as short as nine inches.
  8. Judges 3:23 Or colonnaded porch or balcony. The meaning of the word is uncertain. It seems that Ehud escaped by jumping off a balcony or perhaps by exiting through the toilet pit. See the next verse.
