21 Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife. 2 And the people came to Beth-el, and sat there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore. 3 And they said, O Jehovah, the God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to-day one tribe lacking in Israel? 4 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. 5 And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up in the assembly unto Jehovah? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up unto Jehovah to Mizpah, saying, He shall surely be put to death. 6 And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day. 7 How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by Jehovah that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?
8 And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up unto Jehovah to Mizpah? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly. 9 For when the people were numbered, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead there. 10 And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones. 11 And this is the thing that ye shall do: ye shall [a]utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man. 12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
13 And the whole congregation sent and spake to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace unto them. 14 And Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead: and yet so they sufficed them not. 15 And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that Jehovah had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
16 Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin? 17 And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that are escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not blotted out from Israel. 18 Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters, for the children of Israel had sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin. 19 And they said, Behold, there is [b]a feast of Jehovah from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north of Beth-el, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah. 20 And they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards, 21 and see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. 22 And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come to [c]complain unto us, that we will say unto them, Grant them [d]graciously unto us, because we took not for each man of them his wife in battle, neither did ye give them unto them, else would ye now be guilty. 23 And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they carried off: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and built the cities, and dwelt in them. 24 And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.
25 In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

Mujeres para los de Benjamín
21 Los hombres de Israel habían jurado en Mizpa, diciendo: Ninguno de nosotros dará su hija por mujer a los de Benjamín(A). 2 Entonces el pueblo vino a Betel, y permaneció allí delante de Dios hasta la noche; y alzaron sus voces y lloraron amargamente[a](B). 3 Y dijeron: ¿Por qué, oh Señor, Dios de Israel, ha sucedido esto en Israel, que falte hoy una tribu en Israel? 4 Y[b] al día siguiente el pueblo se levantó temprano, y edificaron allí un altar y ofrecieron holocaustos y ofrendas de paz(C).
5 Después los hijos de Israel dijeron: ¿Quién de entre todas las tribus de Israel no subió a[c] la asamblea del[d] Señor? Porque habían hecho[e] gran juramento en cuanto a todo aquel que no subiera al Señor en Mizpa, diciendo: Ciertamente se le dará muerte(D). 6 Los hijos de Israel se entristecieron por su hermano Benjamín, y dijeron: Ha sido cortada hoy una tribu de Israel. 7 ¿Qué haremos para conseguir mujeres para los que han quedado, ya que hemos jurado por el Señor no darles ninguna de nuestras hijas en matrimonio(E)?
8 Y dijeron: ¿Cuál de las tribus de Israel no subió al Señor en Mizpa? Y he aquí que ninguno de Jabes-galaad había venido al campamento, a la asamblea. 9 Porque cuando contaron al pueblo, he aquí, ninguno de los habitantes de Jabes-galaad estaba allí. 10 La congregación envió a doce mil de los hombres de guerra[f] allá, y les mandaron diciendo: Id y herid a los habitantes de Jabes-galaad a filo de espada, con las mujeres y los niños(F). 11 Y esto es lo que haréis: destruiréis a todo hombre y a toda mujer que se haya acostado[g] con varón(G). 12 Y hallaron entre los habitantes de Jabes-galaad a cuatrocientas doncellas que no se habían acostado[h] con varón; y las llevaron al campamento en Silo, que está en la tierra de Canaán.
13 Toda la congregación envió palabra, y hablaron a los hijos de Benjamín que estaban en la peña de Rimón(H), y les hablaron de paz(I). 14 Volvieron entonces los de Benjamín, y les dieron las mujeres que habían guardado vivas de entre las mujeres de Jabes-galaad; mas no había suficientes para todos[i]. 15 Y el pueblo tuvo tristeza por Benjamín, porque el Señor había abierto una brecha en las tribus de Israel.
16 Entonces los ancianos de la congregación dijeron: ¿Qué haremos para conseguir mujeres para los que quedan, ya que las mujeres de Benjamín fueron destruidas? 17 Y dijeron: Debe haber herencia para los de Benjamín que han escapado, para que no sea exterminada[j] una tribu de Israel. 18 Pero nosotros no le podemos dar mujeres de nuestras hijas. Porque los hijos de Israel habían jurado diciendo: Maldito el que dé mujer a los de Benjamín(J).
19 Y dijeron: He aquí, cada año hay una fiesta del Señor en Silo(K), que está al norte de Betel, al lado oriental del camino que sube de Betel a Siquem, y al sur de Lebona. 20 Y mandaron a los hijos de Benjamín, diciendo: Id, y emboscaos en las viñas, 21 y velad; y he aquí, si las hijas de Silo salen a tomar parte[k] en las danzas(L), entonces saldréis de las viñas y tomaréis cada uno una[l] mujer de las hijas de Silo, y volved[m] a la tierra de Benjamín. 22 Y sucederá que cuando sus padres o sus hermanos vengan a quejarse a nosotros, les diremos: Dádnoslas voluntariamente, porque no pudimos tomar en batalla una[n] mujer para cada hombre de Benjamín, tampoco[o] vosotros se las disteis, pues entonces seríais culpables(M). 23 Lo hicieron así los hijos de Benjamín, y tomaron mujeres conforme a su número de entre las que danzaban, de las cuales se apoderaron. Y se fueron y volvieron a su heredad, y reedificaron las ciudades y habitaron en ellas(N). 24 Los hijos de Israel se fueron entonces de allí, cada uno a su tribu y a su familia, y todos ellos salieron de allí para su heredad.
25 En esos días no había rey en Israel(O); cada uno hacía lo que le parecía bien ante sus ojos.

Pesar de los israelitas
21 Los de Israel habían hecho este juramento en Mispá:
— Ninguno de nosotros dará su hija en matrimonio a Benjamín.
2 El pueblo fue a Betel y allí permaneció hasta la tarde delante de Dios, llorando y suplicando con grandes gemidos. 3 Decían:
— Señor, Dios de Israel, ¿por qué tiene que desaparecer hoy en Israel una de sus tribus?
4 Al día siguiente el pueblo se levantó de madrugada, construyó allí un altar, y ofreció holocaustos y sacrificios de comunión. 5 Dijeron los israelitas:
— ¿Qué tribu de Israel no acudió a la asamblea ante el Señor?
Porque se habían juramentado solemnemente a castigar con la muerte al que no se presentara en Mispá ante el Señor. 6 Pero los israelitas estaban apenados por su hermano Benjamín y decían:
— Hoy ha sido borrada una tribu de Israel. 7 ¿Qué haremos para proporcionar mujeres a los que quedan? Pues nosotros hemos jurado por el Señor no darles nuestras hijas en matrimonio.
Las vírgenes de Jabés para los benjaminitas
8 Entonces se dijeron:
— ¿Cuál es la única tribu de Israel que no se presentó ante el Señor en Mispá?
Y resultó que nadie de Jabés de Galaad había acudido al campamento, a la asamblea. 9 Se hizo el recuento de la gente y no estaba ninguno de los habitantes de Jabés de Galaad. 10 Entonces la comunidad escogió a doce mil hombres valientes y les dio esta orden:
— Vayan y pasen a cuchillo a los habitantes de Jabés de Galaad, incluidas las mujeres y los niños. 11 Esto es lo que han de hacer: consagrarán al exterminio a todo varón y a toda mujer que no sea virgen, pero dejarán con vida a las doncellas.
Así lo hicieron. 12 Encontraron entre los habitantes de Jabés de Galaad cuatrocientas muchachas vírgenes que no habían tenido relaciones sexuales con varón y las llevaron al campamento de Siló, en el país de Canaán.
13 Toda la comunidad mandó emisarios a los benjaminitas que estaban en la Peña de Rimón para hacer las paces. 14 Regresaron entonces los benjaminitas. Y les dieron las mujeres de Jabés de Galaad que habían quedado con vida. Pero no hubo bastantes para todos.
Rapto de las muchachas de Siló
15 El pueblo se compadeció de Benjamín, porque el Señor había dejado un vacío en las tribus de Israel. 16 Decían los ancianos de la comunidad:
— ¿Qué podríamos hacer para proporcionar mujeres a los que aún quedan, pues las mujeres de Benjamín han sido exterminadas?
17 Y añadían:
— ¿Cómo conservar un resto de Benjamín para que no sea borrada una tribu de Israel? 18 Porque nosotros no podemos darles nuestras hijas en matrimonio. (Los israelitas, en efecto, habían pronunciado este juramento: “Maldito el que dé mujer a Benjamín”).
19 Entonces se dijeron:
— En estos días tiene lugar la fiesta del Señor, la que se celebra todos los años en Siló. (Esta ciudad está al norte de Betel, en la parte oriental del camino que sube de Betel a Siquén y al sur de Leboná.)
20 Así que dieron estas instrucciones a los benjaminitas:
— Vayan y escóndanse entre las viñas. 21 Y estén alerta. Cuando las muchachas de Siló salgan para danzar en corro, salgan ustedes de las viñas y rapten cada uno una mujer de entre las muchachas de Siló y váyanse a tierra de Benjamín. 22 Si luego vienen sus padres o sus hermanos a reclamarles, les diremos: “Perdónenlos, por favor, pues han capturado cada uno una mujer como en la guerra”. Y tampoco puede decirse que se las han dado ustedes, porque en ese caso ustedes serían culpables.
23 Así lo hicieron los benjaminitas: raptaron tantas danzarinas como eran ellos; luego se fueron, regresaron cada uno a su heredad, reconstruyeron las ciudades y se establecieron en ellas.
24 Por su parte, los israelitas se marcharon de allí cada uno a su tribu, a su clan y a su heredad. 25 Porque era un tiempo en que no había rey en Israel y cada uno hacía lo que le venía en gana.
