Guerra contra Benjamín

20 Entonces salieron todos los israelitas, desde Dan hasta Beerseba, incluyendo la tierra de Galaad, y la congregación se reunió al Señor como un solo hombre en Mizpa(A). 2 Y los jefes[a] de todo el pueblo, de todas las tribus de Israel, tomaron su puesto en la asamblea del pueblo de Dios, 400,000 soldados[b](B) de a pie que sacaban espada.

3 (Y los hijos de Benjamín oyeron que los israelitas habían subido a Mizpa). Entonces los israelitas preguntaron: «Dígannos, ¿cómo ocurrió esta maldad?». 4 El levita, marido de la mujer que había sido asesinada, respondió: «Vine con mi concubina a pasar la noche en Guibeá de Benjamín. 5 Pero los hombres de Guibeá se levantaron contra mí, y rodearon la casa por la noche por causa mía(C). Tenían intención de matarme. Pero en vez de esto, violaron a mi concubina de tal manera que murió(D). 6 Tomé entonces a mi concubina, la corté en pedazos y la envié por todo el territorio de la heredad de Israel(E), porque han cometido lascivia y terrible ofensa[c] en Israel(F). 7 Así que todos ustedes, israelitas, den aquí su parecer y consejo(G)».

8 Entonces todo el pueblo se levantó como un solo hombre y dijeron: «Ninguno de nosotros irá a su tienda, ni ninguno de nosotros volverá a su casa. 9 Esto es lo que haremos ahora a Guibeá: subiremos contra la ciudad[d] por sorteo. 10 Tomaremos diez hombres de cada 100 por todas las tribus de Israel, y 100 de cada 1,000 y 1,000 de cada 10,000 para proveer[e] víveres para el ejército[f], que vaya a Guibeá de Benjamín a castigarlos por toda la infamia que han cometido en Israel». 11 Así se juntaron contra la ciudad todos los hombres de Israel, como un solo hombre.

12 Entonces las tribus de Israel enviaron hombres por toda la tribu[g] de Benjamín y dijeron: «¿Qué es esta infamia que se ha cometido entre ustedes? 13 Entreguen ahora a los hombres, esos perversos[h](H) en Guibeá, para que les demos muerte y quitemos esta infamia de Israel(I)». Pero los de la tribu de Benjamín no quisieron escuchar la voz de sus hermanos, los israelitas.

14 Y los benjamitas, de sus[i] ciudades, se reunieron en Guibeá para salir a combatir contra los israelitas. 15 De las ciudades fueron contados[j] en aquel día, de los benjamitas, 26,000 hombres que sacaban espada(J), además de los habitantes de Guibeá que fueron contados[k], 700 hombres escogidos. 16 De toda esta gente, 700 hombres escogidos eran zurdos(K); capaces cada uno de lanzar con la honda una piedra a un cabello sin errar.

17 Entonces los hombres de Israel, aparte de Benjamín, fueron contados[l], 400,000 hombres que sacaban espada. Todos estos eran hombres de guerra. 18 Los israelitas se levantaron, subieron a Betel[m], y consultaron a Dios(L), y preguntaron: «¿Quién de nosotros subirá primero a pelear contra la tribu de Benjamín?». Entonces el Señor respondió: «Judá subirá primero».

19 Los israelitas se levantaron por la mañana y acamparon contra Guibeá. 20 Los hombres de Israel salieron a combatir contra Benjamín, y los hombres de Israel se pusieron en orden de batalla contra ellos en Guibeá. 21 Pero los benjamitas salieron de Guibeá y derribaron[n] por tierra en aquel día 22,000 hombres de Israel(M).

22 Pero el pueblo, los hombres de Israel, se reanimaron, y se pusieron otra vez en orden de batalla en el lugar donde se habían puesto el primer día. 23 Y subieron los israelitas y lloraron delante del Señor hasta la noche(N), y consultaron al Señor(O), diciendo: «¿Nos acercaremos otra vez para combatir contra los hijos de mi hermano Benjamín?». Y el Señor dijo: «Suban contra él».

24 Entonces los israelitas fueron contra[o] los de Benjamín el segundo día. 25 Y salió Benjamín de Guibeá contra[p] ellos el segundo día y otra vez hizo caer[q] 18,000 hombres de los israelitas. Todos estos sacaban espada.

26 Todos los israelitas y todo el pueblo subieron y vinieron a Betel y lloraron(P); y permanecieron allí delante del Señor y ayunaron ese día hasta la noche. Y ofrecieron holocaustos y ofrendas de paz delante del Señor. 27 Los israelitas consultaron al Señor(Q), porque el arca del pacto de Dios estaba allí en aquellos días, 28 y Finees, hijo de Eleazar, hijo de Aarón, estaba delante de ella para ministrar en aquellos días y preguntó: «¿Volveré a salir otra vez a combatir contra los hijos de mi hermano Benjamín, o desistiré?». Y el Señor respondió: «Suban, porque mañana lo entregaré en tu mano(R)».

Derrota y exterminio de los benjamitas

29 Puso, pues, Israel emboscadas alrededor de Guibeá(S). 30 Los israelitas subieron contra los de Benjamín al tercer día, y se pusieron en orden de batalla contra Guibeá como las otras veces. 31 Salieron los hijos de Benjamín contra[r] el pueblo, y fueron alejados de la ciudad(T). Comenzaron como las otras veces a herir y a matar a algunos del pueblo por los caminos, uno de los cuales sube a Betel[s] y el otro a Guibeá, en campo abierto. Y mataron a unos treinta hombres de Israel. 32 Y los hijos de Benjamín dijeron: «Están derrotados delante de nosotros como la primera vez». Pero los israelitas dijeron: «Huyamos para que los alejemos de la ciudad hacia los caminos».

33 Entonces todos los hombres de Israel se levantaron de sus puestos y se pusieron en orden de batalla en Baal Tamar. Y los emboscados de Israel salieron de sus puestos(U), de Maareh Geba. 34 Cuando 10,000 hombres escogidos de todo Israel fueron contra Guibeá, la batalla se hizo reñida[t]; pero Benjamín no sabía[u] que el desastre[v] se le acercaba[w](V). 35 Y el Señor hirió a Benjamín delante de Israel, de modo que los israelitas mataron ese día a 25,100 hombres de Benjamín, todos ellos[x] sacaban espada.

36 Y los de Benjamín vieron que estaban derrotados[y]. Cuando los hombres de Israel cedieron terreno[z] a Benjamín porque confiaban en las emboscadas que habían puesto contra Guibeá(W), 37 los emboscados se apresuraron y se lanzaron contra Guibeá. Entonces se desplegaron e hirieron toda la ciudad a filo de espada(X).

38 La señal convenida entre los hombres de Israel y los emboscados, era de que ellos harían que se levantara una gran nube de humo de la ciudad(Y), 39 entonces los hombres de Israel regresarían a la batalla. Y los de Benjamín empezaron a herir y matar a unos treinta hombres de Israel, porque dijeron: «Ciertamente están derrotados[aa] delante de nosotros como en la primera batalla(Z)».

40 Pero cuando la nube de humo como columna empezó a levantarse de la ciudad, los de Benjamín miraron tras sí; y de toda la ciudad subía humo al cielo(AA). 41 Entonces los hombres de Israel se volvieron, y los de Benjamín se aterrorizaron porque vieron que el desastre[ab] se les acercaba[ac](AB). 42 Por tanto, volvieron la espalda ante los hombres de Israel en dirección al desierto, pero la batalla los alcanzó, y los que salían de las ciudades los destruían en medio de ellos(AC). 43 Cercaron a Benjamín, lo persiguieron sin tregua y lo aplastaron frente a Guibeá(AD), hacia el oriente[ad]. 44 Cayeron 18,000 hombres de Benjamín; todos ellos eran valientes guerreros.

45 Cuando los demás[ae] se volvieron y huyeron al desierto, a la peña de Rimón(AE), los israelitas capturaron[af] a 5,000 de ellos en los caminos, y a otros los persiguieron muy de cerca hasta Gidom y mataron[ag] a 2,000 de ellos. 46 El total de los de Benjamín que cayeron aquel día fue de 25,000 hombres que sacaban espada, todos ellos valientes guerreros. 47 Pero 600 hombres se volvieron y huyeron al desierto, a la peña de Rimón, y permanecieron en la peña de Rimón cuatro meses. 48 Entonces los hombres de Israel se volvieron contra los hijos de Benjamín y los hirieron a filo de espada, a toda[ah] la ciudad, así como el ganado y todo lo que encontraron; también prendieron fuego a todas las ciudades que hallaron.

Israel’s War with the Benjamites

20 So (A)all the children of Israel came out, from (B)Dan to (C)Beersheba, as well as from the land of Gilead, and the congregation gathered together as one man before the Lord (D)at Mizpah. 2 And the leaders of all the people, all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand foot soldiers (E)who drew the sword. 3 (Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel had gone up to Mizpah.)

Then the children of Israel said, “Tell us, how did this wicked deed happen?”

4 So the Levite, the husband of the woman who was murdered, answered and said, “My concubine and (F)I went into Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin, to spend the night. 5 (G)And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and surrounded the house at night because of me. They intended to kill me, (H)but instead they ravished my concubine so that she died. 6 So (I)I took hold of my concubine, cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the territory of the inheritance of Israel, because they (J)committed lewdness and outrage in Israel. 7 Look! All of you are children of Israel; (K)give your advice and counsel here and now!”

8 So all the people arose as one man, saying, “None of us will go to his tent, nor will any turn back to his house; 9 but now this is the thing which we will do to Gibeah: We will go up (L)against it by lot. 10 We will take ten men out of every hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, a hundred out of every thousand, and a thousand out of every ten thousand, to make provisions for the people, that when they come to Gibeah in Benjamin, they may repay all the vileness that they have done in Israel.” 11 So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, united together as one man.

12 (M)Then the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What is this wickedness that has occurred among you? 13 Now therefore, deliver up the men, (N)the [a]perverted men who are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death and (O)remove the evil from Israel!” But the children of Benjamin would not listen to the voice of their brethren, the children of Israel. 14 Instead, the children of Benjamin gathered together from their cities to Gibeah, to go to battle against the children of Israel. 15 And from their cities at that time (P)the children of Benjamin numbered twenty-six thousand men who drew the sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah, who numbered seven hundred select men. 16 Among all this people were seven hundred select men who were (Q)left-handed; every one could sling a stone at a hair’s breadth and not miss. 17 Now besides Benjamin, the men of Israel numbered four hundred thousand men who drew the sword; all of these were men of war.

18 Then the children of Israel arose and (R)went up to [b]the house of God to (S)inquire of God. They said, “Which of us shall go up first to battle against the children of Benjamin?”

The Lord said, (T)“Judah first!”

19 So the children of Israel rose in the morning and encamped against Gibeah. 20 And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin, and the men of Israel put themselves in battle array to fight against them at Gibeah. 21 Then (U)the children of Benjamin came out of Gibeah, and on that day cut down to the ground twenty-two thousand men of the Israelites. 22 And the people, that is, the men of Israel, encouraged themselves and again formed the battle line at the place where they had put themselves in array on the first day. 23 (V)Then the children of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until evening, and asked counsel of the Lord, saying, “Shall I again draw near for battle against the children of my brother Benjamin?”

And the Lord said, “Go up against him.”

24 So the children of Israel approached the children of Benjamin on the second day. 25 And (W)Benjamin went out against them from Gibeah on the second day, and cut down to the ground eighteen thousand more of the children of Israel; all these drew the sword.

26 Then all the children of Israel, that is, all the people, (X)went up and came to [c]the house of God and wept. They sat there before the Lord and fasted that day until evening; and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. 27 So the children of Israel inquired of the Lord ((Y)the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days, 28 (Z)and Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, (AA)stood before it in those days), saying, “Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of my brother Benjamin, or shall I cease?”

And the Lord said, “Go up, for tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand.”

29 Then Israel (AB)set men in ambush all around Gibeah. 30 And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in battle array against Gibeah as at the other times. 31 So the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city. They began to strike down and kill some of the people, as at the other times, in the highways (AC)(one of which goes up to Bethel and the other to Gibeah) and in the field, about thirty men of Israel. 32 And the children of Benjamin said, “They are defeated before us, as at first.”

But the children of Israel said, “Let us flee and draw them away from the city to the highways.” 33 So all the men of Israel rose from their place and put themselves in battle array at Baal Tamar. Then Israel’s men in ambush burst forth from their position in the plain of Geba. 34 And ten thousand select men from all Israel came against Gibeah, and the battle was fierce. (AD)But [d]the Benjamites did not know that disaster was upon them. 35 The Lord [e]defeated Benjamin before Israel. And the children of Israel destroyed that day twenty-five thousand one hundred Benjamites; all these drew the sword.

36 So the children of Benjamin saw that they were defeated. (AE)The men of Israel had given ground to the Benjamites, because they relied on the men in ambush whom they had set against Gibeah. 37 (AF)And the men in ambush quickly rushed upon Gibeah; the men in ambush spread out and struck the whole city with the edge of the sword. 38 Now the appointed signal between the men of Israel and the men in ambush was that they would make a great cloud of (AG)smoke rise up from the city, 39 whereupon the men of Israel would turn in battle. Now Benjamin had begun [f]to strike and kill about thirty of the men of Israel. For they said, “Surely they are defeated before us, as in the first battle.” 40 But when the cloud began to rise from the city in a column of smoke, the Benjamites (AH)looked behind them, and there was the whole city going up in smoke to heaven. 41 And when the men of Israel turned back, the men of Benjamin panicked, for they saw that disaster had come upon them. 42 Therefore they [g]turned their backs before the men of Israel in the direction of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them, and whoever came out of the cities they destroyed in their midst. 43 They surrounded the Benjamites, chased them, and easily trampled them down as far as the front of Gibeah toward the east. 44 And eighteen thousand men of Benjamin fell; all these were men of valor. 45 Then [h]they turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of (AI)Rimmon; and they cut down five thousand of them on the highways. Then they pursued them relentlessly up to Gidom, and killed two thousand of them. 46 So all who fell of Benjamin that day were twenty-five thousand men who drew the sword; all these were [i]men of valor.

47 (AJ)But six hundred men turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, and they stayed at the rock of Rimmon for four months. 48 And the men of Israel turned back against the children of Benjamin, and struck them down with the edge of the sword—from every city, men and beasts, all who were found. They also set fire to all the cities they came to.
