耶和華的使者在波金顯現
2 耶和華的使者從吉甲上到波金來，說：“我曾經把你們從埃及領上來，帶你們到我向你們列祖起誓應許的地方；我曾說過：‘我永不廢棄我與你們所立的約； 2 你們不可與這地的居民立約，要拆毀他們的祭壇。’你們竟沒有聽從我的話；你們作的是甚麼呢？ 3 因此我又說：‘我必不把他們從你們面前趕走，他們要作你們的敵人（按照《馬索拉文本》，“敵人”作“邊旁”，意思不明確，或譯：“網羅”；現參照各古譯本翻譯），他們的神要作你們的網羅。’” 4 耶和華的使者對以色列眾人說這些話的時候，眾人就放聲大哭。 5 於是給那地方起名叫波金；他們在那裡向耶和華獻祭。
約書亞逝世
6 約書亞遣散了眾人，以色列人就各歸自己承受的地業，要佔有那地。 7 約書亞在世的時候，以及他去世以後，那些見過耶和華為以色列人所行的大事的眾長老還在的日子，眾人都事奉耶和華。 8 耶和華的僕人，嫩的兒子約書亞，在一百一十歲的時候就死了。 9 以色列人把他埋葬在他地業的境內，就是以法蓮山地，在迦實山北面的亭拿．希烈。 10 那一代的人都歸到他們的列祖那裡以後，有另一代的人興起來了；他們不認識耶和華，也不知道耶和華為以色列人所行的事。

11 以色列人行了耶和華看為惡的事，去事奉眾巴力； 12 他們離棄了領他們出埃及的耶和華、他們列祖的 神，去跟從別的神，就是他們周圍各族的神，敬拜他們，惹耶和華發怒。 13 他們離棄了耶和華，去事奉巴力和亞斯他錄。 14 耶和華的怒氣向以色列人發作，就把他們交在搶掠的人手中，他們就搶掠他們；他又把他們完全交在他們四圍的仇敵手中，以致他們在仇敵面前再不能站立得住。 15 他們無論去哪裡，耶和華的手總是加害他們，好像耶和華說過的，又像耶和華對他們起誓過的；他們就非常困苦。 16 耶和華興起了士師，士師就拯救他們脫離搶掠他們的人的手。 17 但他們連士師也不聽從，竟與別的神行了姦淫，敬拜他們；他們迅速偏離了他們列祖所行、聽從耶和華命令的道路，他們沒有照樣行。 18 耶和華為他們興起士師的時候，耶和華就與那士師同在；那士師在世的日子，耶和華總是拯救他們脫離仇敵的手；因為他們在壓迫和苦害他們的人底下發出哀聲，耶和華就憐憫他們。 19 可是士師死了以後，他們就轉而行惡，比他們的列祖更厲害，去隨從別的神，事奉和敬拜他們，總不放棄他們的惡行和頑梗的行徑。 20 於是耶和華的怒氣向以色列人發作，說：“因為這國的人違背我吩咐他們列祖的約，不聽從我的話， 21 因此，約書亞死後仍剩下來的列國，我也不再從他們面前趕走， 22 為要藉著他們試驗以色列人，看他們肯不肯謹守遵行耶和華的道路，像他們的列祖一樣謹守。” 23 這樣，耶和華留下這些國的民，不迅速把他們趕走，也不把他們交在約書亞手裡。

Israel Rebuked
2 Now (A)the angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to (B)Bochim. And he said, “(C)I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land which I have sworn to your fathers; and I said, ‘(D)I will never break My covenant with you, 2 and as for you, (E)you shall not make a covenant with the inhabitants of this land; (F)you shall tear down their altars.’ But you have not [a]obeyed Me; what is this thing that you have done? 3 Therefore I also said, ‘(G)I will not drive them out from you; but they will [b]become (H)like thorns in your sides, and their gods will be a snare to you.’” 4 Now when the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, the people raised their voices and wept. 5 So they named that place [c]Bochim; and there they sacrificed to the Lord.
Joshua Dies
6 (I)When Joshua had dismissed the people, the sons of Israel went, each one to his inheritance, to take possession of the land. 7 The people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who [d]survived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of the Lord which He had done for Israel. 8 Then Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of 110. 9 And they buried him in the territory of (J)his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. 10 All that generation also were gathered to their fathers; and another generation rose up after them who (K)did not know the Lord, nor even the work which He had done for Israel.
Israel Serves the Baals
11 Then the sons of Israel did (L)evil in the sight of the Lord and [e]served the (M)Baals, 12 and (N)they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they followed other gods from the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed down to them; so they provoked the Lord to anger. 13 They abandoned the Lord and (O)served Baal and the Ashtaroth. 14 (P)Then the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He handed them over to plunderers, and they plundered them; and (Q)He sold them into the hands of their enemies around them, so that they could no longer stand [f]against their enemies. 15 Wherever they went, the hand of the Lord was against them for [g]evil, as the Lord had spoken and (R)just as the Lord had sworn to them, so that they were severely distressed.
16 (S)Then the Lord raised up judges [h]who saved them from the hands of those who plundered them. 17 Yet they did not listen to their judges, for they [i]committed infidelity with other gods and bowed down to them. They turned aside quickly from the way (T)in which their fathers had walked in obeying the commandments of the Lord; they did not do the same as their fathers. 18 And when the Lord raised up judges for them, (U)the Lord was with the judge and saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord was (V)moved to pity by their groaning because of those who tormented and oppressed them. 19 But it came about, when the judge died, that they would turn back and act more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them and bow down to them; they did not abandon their practices or their obstinate ways. 20 (W)So the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this nation has violated My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not listened to My voice, 21 (X)I in turn will no longer drive out from them any of the nations which Joshua left when he died, 22 in order to (Y)test Israel by them, whether they will keep the way of the Lord to walk in it as their fathers [j]did, or not.” 23 So the Lord allowed those nations to remain, not driving them out quickly; and He did not hand them over to Joshua.

Chapter 2
Infidelities of the Israelites. 1 A messenger of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bochim and said, I brought you up from Egypt and led you into the land which I promised on oath to your ancestors. I said, I will never break my covenant with you, 2 but you must not make a covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you must pull down their altars.(A) But you did not listen to me. Look what you have done! 3 For I also said,[a] I will not clear them out of your way; they will become traps for you, and their gods a snare for you.(B)
4 When the messenger of the Lord had spoken these things to all the Israelites, the people wept aloud. 5 They named that place Bochim,[b] and they offered sacrifice there to the Lord.
6 (C)Then Joshua dismissed the people, and the Israelites went, each to their own heritage, to take possession of the land. 7 The people served the Lord during the entire lifetime of Joshua, and of those elders who outlived Joshua and who had seen all the great work the Lord had done for Israel. 8 Joshua, son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten, 9 and they buried him within the borders of his heritage at Timnath-heres in the mountain region of Ephraim north of Mount Gaash.(D)
10 [c]When the rest of that generation were also gathered to their ancestors, and a later generation arose that did not know the Lord or the work he had done for Israel, 11 (E)the Israelites did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. They served the Baals,[d] 12 and abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the one who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They followed other gods, the gods of the peoples around them, and bowed down to them, and provoked the Lord.
13 Because they had abandoned the Lord and served Baal and the Astartes,[e] 14 the anger of the Lord flared up against Israel, and he delivered them into the power of plunderers who despoiled them. He sold them into the power of the enemies around them, and they were no longer able to withstand their enemies. 15 Whenever they marched out, the hand of the Lord turned against them, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had sworn to them;(F) and they were in great distress. 16 But the Lord raised up judges to save them from the power of their plunderers; 17 but they did not listen to their judges either, for they prostituted themselves by following other gods, bowing down to them. They were quick to stray from the way their ancestors had taken, who obeyed the commandments of the Lord; but these did not. 18 When the Lord raised up judges for them, he would be with the judge and save them from the power of their enemies as long as the judge lived. The Lord would change his mind when they groaned in their affliction under their oppressors. 19 But when the judge died, they would again do worse than their ancestors, following other gods, serving and bowing down to them, relinquishing none of their evil practices or stubborn ways.(G)
20 (H)The anger of the Lord flared up against Israel, and he said: Because this nation has transgressed my covenant, which I enjoined on their ancestors, and has not listened to me, 21 I for my part will not clear away for them any more of the nations Joshua left when he died. 22 (I)They will be made to test Israel, to see whether or not they will keep to the way of the Lord and continue in it as their ancestors did. 23 Therefore the Lord allowed these nations to remain instead of expelling them immediately. He had not delivered them into the power of Joshua.

- 2:10–19 This long thematic passage establishes the cyclical pattern for the stories found in the rest of the book. When the Israelites are secure, they forsake the Lord and worship other gods. In punishment the Lord places them in the power of a foreign oppressor. But when they cry out in distress, the Lord takes pity on them and raises up a judge, who delivers them from the oppressor. The Israelites remain faithful to the Lord during the lifetime of the judge, but when the judge dies they again abandon the Lord, and the cycle begins anew.
- 2:11 The Baals: the title “Baal,” meaning “lord” or “master,” belonged to a large number of Canaanite, Phoenician, and Syrian deities, including especially the great storm god Hadad Baal, widely revered as lord of the earth. The plural form, which occurs here, was used by the biblical writers to refer to foreign gods in general.
- 2:13 The Astartes: Ashtoreth, or Astarte, was an important Canaanite and Phoenician goddess. The plural form used here probably refers to foreign goddesses in general.
