2 One day the Angel of the Lord arrived at Bochim, coming from Gilgal, and announced to the people of Israel, “I brought you out of Egypt into this land that I promised to your ancestors, and I said that I would never break my covenant with you, 2 if you, on your part, would make no peace treaties with the people living in this land; I told you to destroy their heathen altars. Why have you not obeyed? 3 And now since you have broken the contract, it is no longer in effect, and I no longer promise to destroy the nations living in your land; rather, they shall be thorns in your sides, and their gods will be a constant temptation to you.”
4 The people broke into tears as the Angel finished speaking; 5 so the name of that place was called “Bochim” (meaning, “the place where people wept”). Then they offered sacrifices to the Lord.
6 When Joshua finally disbanded the armies of Israel, the tribes moved into their new territories and took possession of the land. 7-9 Joshua, the man of God, died at the age of 110 and was buried at the edge of his property in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. The people had remained true to the Lord throughout Joshua’s lifetime, and as long afterward as the old men of his generation were still living—those who had seen the mighty miracles the Lord had done for Israel.
10 But finally all that generation died; and the next generation did not worship Jehovah as their God and did not care about the mighty miracles he had done for Israel. 11 They did many things that the Lord had expressly forbidden, including the worshiping of heathen gods. 12-14 They abandoned Jehovah, the God loved and worshiped by their ancestors—the God who had brought them out of Egypt. Instead, they were worshiping and bowing low before the idols of the neighboring nations. So the anger of the Lord flamed out against all Israel. He left them to the mercy of their enemies, for they had departed from Jehovah and were worshiping Baal and the Ashtaroth idols.
15 So now when the nation of Israel went out to battle against its enemies, the Lord blocked their path. He had warned them about this, and in fact had vowed that he would do it. But when the people were in this terrible plight, 16 the Lord raised up judges to save them from their enemies.
17 Yet even then Israel would not listen to the judges, but broke faith with Jehovah by worshiping other gods instead. How quickly they turned away from the true faith of their ancestors, for they refused to obey God’s commands. 18 Each judge rescued the people of Israel from their enemies throughout his lifetime, for the Lord was moved to pity by the groaning of his people under their crushing oppressions; so he helped them as long as that judge lived. 19 But when the judge died, the people turned from doing right and behaved even worse than their ancestors had. They prayed to heathen gods again, throwing themselves to the ground in humble worship. They stubbornly returned to the evil customs of the nations around them.
20 Then the anger of the Lord would flame out against Israel again. He declared, “Because these people have violated the treaty I made with their ancestors, 21 I will no longer drive out the nations left unconquered by Joshua when he died. 22 Instead, I will use these nations to test my people, to see whether or not they will obey the Lord as their ancestors did.”
23 So the Lord left those nations in the land and did not drive them out, nor let Israel destroy them.

2 Pumunta ang anghel ng Panginoon sa Bokim mula sa Gilgal. At sinabi niya sa mga Israelita, ito ang ipinapasabi ng Panginoon: “Inilabas ko kayo sa Egipto at dinala dito sa lupain na ipinangako ko sa inyong mga ninuno. Sinabi ko noon na hindi ko sisirain ang kasunduan ko sa inyo. 2 Sinabi ko rin na huwag kayong gagawa ng kasunduan sa mga tao sa lupaing ito kundi gibain nʼyo ang mga altar nila. Pero ano ang ginawa ninyo? Hindi nʼyo ako sinunod! 3 Kaya ngayon, hindi ko sila itataboy sa lupain ninyo. Magiging parang tinik sila sa daraanan ninyo at ang mga dios nila ay magiging parang bitag sa inyo.”
4 Nang marinig ito ng mga Israelita, humagulgol sila. 5 Kaya tinawag nilang Bokim[a] ang lugar na iyon. At doon sila naghandog sa Panginoon.
6 Nang pinauwi na ni Josue ang mga Israelita, umalis sila upang angkinin ang lupain na nakalaan para sa kanila. 7 At naglingkod sila sa Panginoon habang nabubuhay si Josue. At kahit namatay na siya, patuloy pa rin silang naglingkod sa Panginoon habang nabubuhay ang mga tagapamahala ng Israel na nakakita ng lahat ng kahanga-hangang ginawa ng Panginoon para sa Israel. 8 Ang lingkod ng Panginoon na si Josue na anak ni Nun ay namatay sa edad na 110. 9 Inilibing siya sa kanyang lupain doon sa Timnat Heres, sa kabundukan ng Efraim, sa hilaga ng Bundok ng Gaas.

10 Nang mamatay ang mga tao sa henerasyong iyon, ang sumunod na salinlahi ay hindi nakikilala ang Panginoon, maging ang mga ginawa niya para sa Israel. 11 Gumawa ng kasamaan ang mga Israelita sa paningin ng Panginoon at naglingkod sa mga imahen ni Baal. 12 Itinakwil nila ang Panginoon, ang Dios ng kanilang mga ninuno, na siyang naglabas sa kanila sa Egipto. Sinunod nila at sinamba ang ibaʼt ibang dios ng mga tao sa paligid nila. Nagalit ang Panginoon, 13 dahil itinakwil siya ng mga ito at naglingkod kay Baal at kay Ashtoret. 14 Dahil sa galit ng Panginoon sa Israel, pinabayaan niyang lusubin sila ng mga tulisan para samsamin ang kanilang mga ari-arian. Pinabayaan din sila ng Panginoon na matalo ng mga kaaway nila sa paligid at hindi na nila makayanang ipagtanggol ang kanilang sarili. 15 Kapag nakikipaglaban sila, pinapatalo sila ng Panginoon, tulad ng sinabi niya. Kaya labis silang nahirapan.
16 Ngayon, binigyan ng Panginoon ang Israel ng mga pinuno[b] na magliligtas sa kanila mula sa mga tulisan. 17 Pero hindi nila pinansin ang kanilang mga pinuno. Sa halip, tumalikod sila sa Panginoon at sumamba sa ibang mga dios. Hindi sila katulad ng kanilang mga ninuno. Napakadali nilang tumalikod sa mga utos ng Dios na sinunod noon ng mga ninuno nila. 18 Ang lahat na pinunong ibinigay ng Panginoon sa kanila ay tinulungan niya. At habang buhay ang pinuno nila, inililigtas sila ng Panginoon sa kanilang mga kaaway. Sapagkat naaawa siya sa kanila dahil sa mga pagtitiis nila sa mga nanggigipit at nagpapahirap sa kanila. 19 Pero kapag namatay na ang pinuno, bumabalik na naman sila sa masasama nilang gawa. Muli silang naglilingkod at sumasamba sa ibang mga dios mas masahol pa sa pagkakasala ng kanilang mga ninuno. Ayaw nilang talikuran ang masasamang gawain nila at ang katigasan ng kanilang mga ulo.
20 Kaya lalo pang nagalit ang Panginoon sa kanila. Sinabi ng Panginoon, “Dahil nilabag ng bansang ito ang kasunduan ko sa kanilang mga ninuno, at hindi nila ako sinunod, 21 hindi ko itataboy ang natirang mga bansa na hindi nasakop ni bago siya namatay. 22 Gagamitin ko ang mga bansang ito para subukin ang mga Israelita kung talagang tutuparin nila ang aking mga utos katulad ng kanilang mga ninuno.” 23 Ito ang dahilan kung bakit hindi agad itinaboy ng Panginoon ang natirang mga bansa at hindi niya pinahintulutang matalo ito ni Josue.

2 And an angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.
2 And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?
3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.
4 And it came to pass, when the angel of the Lord spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
5 And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the Lord.
6 And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.
7 And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord, that he did for Israel.
8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died, being an hundred and ten years old.
9 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnathheres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.
10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.
11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim:
12 And they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the Lord to anger.
13 And they forsook the Lord, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.
14 And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.
15 Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.
16 Nevertheless the Lord raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.
17 And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the Lord; but they did not so.
18 And when the Lord raised them up judges, then the Lord was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the Lord because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.
19 And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.
20 And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;
21 I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died:
22 That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the Lord to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.
23 Therefore the Lord left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.

Israel’s Disobedience
2 Then the Angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said: (A)“I led you up from Egypt and (B)brought you to the land of which I swore to your fathers; and (C)I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you. 2 And (D)you shall make no [a]covenant with the inhabitants of this land; (E)you shall tear down their altars.’ (F)But you have not obeyed My voice. Why have you done this? 3 Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; but they shall be (G)thorns[b] in your side, and (H)their gods shall [c]be a (I)snare to you.’ ” 4 So it was, when the Angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voices and wept.
5 Then they called the name of that place [d]Bochim; and they sacrificed there to the Lord. 6 And when (J)Joshua had dismissed the people, the children of Israel went each to his own inheritance to possess the land.
Death of Joshua(K)
7 (L)So the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord which He had done for Israel. 8 Now (M)Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died when he was one hundred and ten years old. 9 (N)And they buried him within the border of his inheritance at (O)Timnath Heres, in the mountains of Ephraim, on the north side of Mount Gaash. 10 When all that generation had [e]been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who (P)did not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel.
Israel’s Unfaithfulness
11 Then the children of Israel did (Q)evil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baals; 12 and they (R)forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; and they followed (S)other gods from among the gods of the people who were all around them, and they (T)bowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger. 13 They forsook the Lord (U)and served [f]Baal and the [g]Ashtoreths. 14 (V)And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel. So He (W)delivered them into the hands of plunderers who despoiled them; and (X)He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, so that they (Y)could no longer stand before their enemies. 15 Wherever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for calamity, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had (Z)sworn to them. And they were greatly distressed.
16 Nevertheless, (AA)the Lord raised up judges who delivered them out of the hand of those who plundered them. 17 Yet they would not listen to their judges, but they (AB)played the harlot with other gods, and bowed down to them. They turned quickly from the way in which their fathers walked, in obeying the commandments of the Lord; they did not do so. 18 And when the Lord raised up judges for them, (AC)the Lord was with the judge and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; (AD)for the Lord was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed them and harassed them. 19 And it came to pass, (AE)when the judge was dead, that they reverted and behaved more corruptly than their fathers, by following other gods, to serve them and bow down to them. They did not cease from their own doings nor from their stubborn way.
20 Then the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel; and He said, “Because this nation has (AF)transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not heeded My voice, 21 I also will no longer drive out before them any of the nations which Joshua (AG)left when he died, 22 so (AH)that through them I may (AI)test Israel, whether they will keep the ways of the Lord, to walk in them as their fathers kept them, or not.” 23 Therefore the Lord left those nations, without driving them out immediately; nor did He deliver them into the hand of Joshua.
