19 So the Lord was with Judah. And they drove out the mountaineers, but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the lowland, because they had (A)chariots of iron. 20 (B)And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said. Then he [a]expelled from there the (C)three sons of Anak. 21 (D)But the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem; so the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

22 And the [b]house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, (E)and the Lord was with them. 23 So the [c]house of Joseph (F)sent men to spy out Bethel. (The name of the city was formerly (G)Luz.) 24 And when the spies saw a man coming out of the city, they said to him, “Please show us the entrance to the city, and (H)we will show you mercy.” 25 So he showed them the entrance to the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man and all his family go. 26 And the man went to the land of the Hittites, built a city, and called its name Luz, which is its name to this day.

Incomplete Conquest of the Land

27 (I)However, Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its villages, or (J)Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of (K)Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; for the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land. 28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites [d]under tribute, but did not completely drive them out.

29 (L)Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; so the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

30 Nor did (M)Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or the inhabitants of Nahalol; so the Canaanites dwelt among them, and [e]were put under tribute.

31 (N)Nor did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Acco or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob. 32 So the Asherites (O)dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.

33 (P)Nor did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh or the inhabitants of Beth Anath; but they dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath were put under tribute to them.

34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountains, for they would not allow them to come down to the valley; 35 and the Amorites were determined to dwell in Mount Heres, (Q)in Aijalon, and in [f]Shaalbim; yet when the strength of the house of Joseph became greater, they [g]were put under tribute.

36 Now the boundary of the Amorites was (R)from the Ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela, and upward.

19 And Yahweh was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain because they had chariots of iron. 20 They gave Hebron to Caleb just as Moses said, and he drove out the three sons of Anak from there. 21 But the descendants[a] of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites[b] who lived in Jerusalem, so the Jebusites have lived among the descendants[c] of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

22 Likewise, the house of Joseph went up against Bethel, and Yahweh was with them. 23 And the house of Joseph spied out Bethel (the former name of the city was Luz). 24 And when the spies saw a man leaving the city,[d] they said to him, “Please show us the entrance of the city, and we will deal kindly[e] with you.” 25 So he showed them the entrance of the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword,[f] but they let go the man and all his family. 26 And the man went to the land of the Hittites, and he built a city and named it Luz; this is its name to this day.

27 Manasseh did not drive out Beth-Sean and its towns, or Taanach and its towns, or the inhabitants[g] of Dor and its towns, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; the Canaanites[h] were determined to live in this land. 28 And it happened, when Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites[i] to forced labor, but they never totally drove them out. 29 Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites[j] living in Gezer, so the Canaanites[k] lived in their midst in Gezer. 30 Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or Nahalol, so the Canaanites[l] lived in their midst and became subjected to forced labor. 31 Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, Sidon, Ahlab, Aczib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob, 32 so the Asherites[m] lived in the midst of the Canaanites,[n] the inhabitants of the land, for they did not drive them out.

33 Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh or Beth-anath, but lived in the midst of the Canaanites,[o] the inhabitants of the land; the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and Beth-anath became forced labor for them.

34 The Amorites pressed[p] the descendants[q] of Dan to the hill country, and they did not allow them to come down to the plain; 35 the Amorites were determined to live in Har-heres,[r] in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, but the hand of the house of Joseph was heavy on them, and they became subjected to forced labor. 36 The border of the Amorites[s] ran from the ascent of Akrabbim from Sela and upward.
