16 In the evening, an old man came in from his work in the field. He was from the hill country of Ephraim,(A) but he was residing in Gibeah where the people were Benjaminites. 17 When he looked up and saw the traveller in the city square, the old man asked, ‘Where are you going, and where do you come from? ’
18 He answered him, ‘We’re travelling from Bethlehem in Judah to the remote hill country of Ephraim, where I am from. I went to Bethlehem in Judah, and now I’m going to the house of the Lord.[a] No one has taken me into his home,

16 That evening(A) an old man from the hill country of Ephraim,(B) who was living in Gibeah (the inhabitants of the place were Benjamites), came in from his work in the fields. 17 When he looked and saw the traveler in the city square, the old man asked, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”(C)
18 He answered, “We are on our way from Bethlehem in Judah to a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim where I live. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah and now I am going to the house of the Lord.[a](D) No one has taken me in for the night.
