Los danitas en busca de territorio
18 Era un tiempo en que no había rey en Israel. La tribu de Dan andaba buscando un territorio donde establecerse, pues hasta entonces no le había correspondido ninguna heredad entre las tribus de Israel. 2 Los danitas enviaron desde Sorá y Estaol a cinco hombres valientes de su tribu para que recorrieran el país y lo exploraran. Les encargaron:
— Vayan a explorar esa tierra.
Llegaron a la montaña de Efraín, cerca de la casa de Micá, y pasaron allí la noche. 3 Como estaban junto a la casa de Micá, reconocieron la voz del joven levita, se le acercaron y le preguntaron:
— ¿Con quién has venido aquí? ¿Qué haces por estos pagos? ¿Qué se te ha perdido en este lugar?
4 El levita les respondió:
— Esto y esto ha hecho Micá por mí. Me ha tomado a sueldo y soy su sacerdote.
5 Ellos le dijeron:
— Consulta, entonces, a Dios a ver si tendrá éxito el viaje que hemos emprendido.
6 Les respondió el sacerdote:
— Vayan en paz; el Señor mira con buenos ojos su viaje.
7 Los cinco hombres partieron y llegaron a Lais. Vieron que las gentes de allí vivían seguras, tranquilas y confiadas, al estilo de los sidonios y vieron también que no faltaba allí ningún producto de la tierra; por otra parte, estaban lejos de los sidonios y no tenían relaciones con los arameos. 8 Regresaron a Sorá y Estaol donde residían sus hermanos, y estos les preguntaron:
— ¿Qué noticias traen?
9 Ellos respondieron:
— ¡Ánimo! Vayamos contra ellos, porque hemos visto el país y es excelente. No se queden ahí quietos, sino pónganse en camino hacia aquella tierra para conquistarla. 10 Cuando lleguen, se encontrarán con un pueblo pacífico y un país espacioso: Dios se lo ha entregado a ustedes; es un lugar que no carece de nada de cuanto puede haber sobre la tierra.
Migración de los danitas
11 Así pues, el clan de los danitas —unos seiscientos hombres bien armados— partió de Sorá y Estaol. 12 Subieron y acamparon en Quiriat Jearín, en Judá. Por eso, todavía hoy, se llama aquel lugar el Campamento de Dan. Está detrás de Quiriat Jearín. 13 De allí se dirigieron a la montaña de Efraín y llegaron a la casa de Micá.
14 Los cinco hombres que habían estado previamente explorando la tierra, tomaron la palabra y dijeron a sus hermanos:
— ¿No saben que en esta casa hay un efod, unos terafín, una imagen y un ídolo de metal fundido? Piensen, pues, lo que han de hacer.
15 Fueron allá y entraron en la casa de Micá, donde estaba el joven levita, y le dieron el saludo de paz. 16 Mientras los seiscientos hombres danitas con sus armas de guerra permanecían en el umbral de la puerta, 17 los cinco hombres que habían ido a explorar la tierra entraron en la casa y se apropiaron de la imagen, el efod, los terafín y el ídolo de fundición. Entretanto, el sacerdote estaba en el umbral de la puerta con los seiscientos hombres armados. 18 Aquellos, pues, que habían entrado en la casa de Micá, se apropiaron de la imagen, el efod, los terafín y el ídolo de fundición. El sacerdote les dijo:
— Pero ¿qué están haciendo?

19 — Calla, cierra la boca y ven con nosotros. Serás nuestro padre y nuestro sacerdote. ¿O prefieres ser sacerdote de la casa de un particular a ser sacerdote de una tribu y de un clan de Israel?
20 Se alegró con ello el corazón del sacerdote, tomó el efod, los terafín y la imagen y se fue en medio de la tropa. 21 Reemprendieron el camino, colocando en cabeza a las mujeres, los niños, los rebaños y los objetos de valor. 22 Estaban ya lejos de la casa de Micá, cuando los de las casas vecinas a la casa de Micá dieron la alarma y salieron en persecución de los danitas. 23 Al oír los gritos de los perseguidores, los danitas miraron hacia atrás y dijeron a Micá:
— ¿Qué te sucede? ¿Por qué gritas así?
24 Respondió:
— Me han quitado mi dios, el que yo me había hecho, y me han arrebatado a mi sacerdote. Se marchan sin dejarme nada y encima me dicen: “¿Qué te sucede?”.
25 Los danitas le contestaron:
— Calla de una vez, no sea que algunos de los nuestros pierdan la paciencia y arremetan contra ustedes, con lo que tú y tu familia perderían la vida.
26 Los danitas siguieron su camino. Micá, por su parte, viendo que eran más fuertes, se volvió a su casa.
Toma de Lais. Fundación de Dan y de su santuario
27 Los danitas tomaron el dios que Micá se había fabricado, junto con su sacerdote, y marcharon contra Lais, pueblo pacífico y confiado. Pasaron a cuchillo a la población e incendiaron la ciudad. 28 Nadie vino en su ayuda, porque estaba lejos de Sidón y no tenía relaciones con los arameos. Lais estaba situada en el valle que se extiende hacia Bet Rejob. Los danitas reconstruyeron la ciudad, se establecieron en ella, 29 y le pusieron el nombre de Dan, en recuerdo de su antepasado Dan, hijo de Israel. Antiguamente la ciudad se llamaba Lais. 30 Construyeron también un altar en honor de la imagen, y Jonatán, hijo de Guersón, hijo de Moisés, y después de él sus descendientes actuaron como sacerdotes en la tribu de Dan hasta el tiempo de la deportación del país. 31 Rindieron culto a la imagen que se había fabricado Micá y que permaneció allí mientras estuvo en Siló la casa de Dios.

18 At that time there was no king in Isra’el, and it was also at that time that the tribe of Dan was looking for a place to claim ownership of and settle in, since they had not yet been given any land of their own among the tribes of Isra’el. 2 The people of Dan sent five leading men from Tzor‘ah and Eshta’ol, representing their whole tribe, to spy out and explore the land. They instructed them, “Go, and explore the land.” They came to the hills of Efrayim, to the house of Mikhah, and stayed there. 3 While they were at Mikhah’s house they recognized the accent of the young man, the Levi, so they approached him and said, “Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? What is there for you here?” 4 He answered, “Here’s the arrangement Mikhah has made with me: he pays me a wage, and I serve as his cohen.” 5 They said to him, “Please ask God whether our journey will be successful.” 6 The cohen replied, “Don’t worry. Adonai is with you on this journey.”
7 The five men left, came to Layish and saw the people there living securely according to the customs of the Tzidonim, quietly and securely; since no one in the land was exercising authority that might shame them in any respect; moreover, they were far away from the Tzidonim and had no dealings with other peoples. 8 When they returned to their kinsmen in Tzor‘ah and Eshta’ol, they asked them what they had to report. 9 They said, “Let’s go up and attack them. We’ve seen the land, and it’s excellent. Don’t delay; start moving! Go in, and take the land! 10 When you go, you will come to a people who feel safe. There’s plenty of land, the place lacks nothing, it has everything there is on earth, and God has given it to you.”
11 So from the tribe of Dan 600 men equipped for war set out from there, from Tzor‘ah and Eshta’ol. 12 They went up and camped at Kiryat-Ye‘arim, in Y’hudah, which is why that place is called Machaneh-Dan [the camp of Dan] to this day (actually, it’s behind Kiryat-Ye‘arim). 13 From there they passed on into the hills of Efrayim and came to Mikhah’s house. 14 The men who had gone to spy out the land of Layish then said to their kinsmen, “Are you aware that in these buildings there is a ritual vest, household gods and a carved image overlaid with silver? Decide what you ought to do.” 15 They turned off the road and went to the house of the young Levi, that is, to Mikhah’s house, and asked how he was doing. 16 The 600 soldiers from Dan stayed at the gate, 17 while the five who had spied out the land went in and took the idol overlaid with silver, the vest and the household gods. The cohen had stayed with the 600 soldiers by the gate. 18 But when they went into Mikhah’s house and took the silver-covered image, the vest and the household gods, the cohen asked them, “What are you doing?” 19 They replied, “Be quiet, keep your mouth shut, and come with us. Be a father and a cohen for us. Which is better? To be a cohen in the house of one man or to be cohen to a whole tribe and family in Isra’el?” 20 This made the cohen feel very good; so he took the ritual vest, the household gods and the image and went off with the people. 21 So they turned and left, with their children, cattle and belongings going ahead of them.
22 When they were a good distance from Mikhah’s house, the men who lived in the houses near his got together [with him], overtook the people from Dan 23 and began shouting at them. The people from Dan turned and said to Mikhah, “What’s wrong with you, that you’ve gathered such a crowd?” 24 He answered, “You’ve taken away my god, which I made, and gone off with the cohen! What more have I got? How can you ask me, ‘What’s wrong with you?’” 25 The men from Dan replied, “You had best say no more to us, because some of us might get angry and attack you. You could lose your life, and so might the others in your household.” 26 Then the people from Dan went their way; and when Mikhah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his house. 27 So they took what Mikhah had made and his cohen.
They came to Layish, to a quiet and trusting people. They attacked, killed them and burned down the city. 28 No one came to rescue them, because it was far from Tzidon, and they had no dealings with other peoples. This was in the valley near Beit-Rechov.
Then the people of Dan rebuilt the city and settled there. 29 They named the city Dan, after Dan their ancestor, who was born to Isra’el; although the city had previously been called Layish. 30 The people of Dan set up the image for themselves. Y’honatan the son of Gershom, the son of M’nasheh, and his sons were cohanim for the tribe of the people of Dan until the day of the exile from the land. 31 Thus they erected for themselves Mikhah’s idol which he had made, and it remained there as long as the house of God was in Shiloh.

18 In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.
2 And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land: who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah, they lodged there.
3 When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite: and they turned in thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee hither? and what makest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?
4 And he said unto them, Thus and thus dealeth Micah with me, and hath hired me, and I am his priest.
5 And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.
6 And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the Lord is your way wherein ye go.
7 Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.
8 And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What say ye?
9 And they said, Arise, that we may go up against them: for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not slothful to go, and to enter to possess the land.
10 When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth.
11 And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war.
12 And they went up, and pitched in Kirjathjearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahanehdan unto this day: behold, it is behind Kirjathjearim.
13 And they passed thence unto mount Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.
14 Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.
15 And they turned thitherward, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and saluted him.
16 And the six hundred men appointed with their weapons of war, which were of the children of Dan, stood by the entering of the gate.
17 And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war.
18 And these went into Micah's house, and fetched the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. Then said the priest unto them, What do ye?
19 And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?
20 And the priest's heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.
21 So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the carriage before them.
22 And when they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah's house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan.
23 And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?
24 And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?
25 And the children of Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household.
26 And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.
27 And they took the things which Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.
28 And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Bethrehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein.
29 And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.
30 And the children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.
31 And they set them up Micah's graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.

The Danites Adopt Micah’s Idolatry
18 In (A)those days there was no king in Israel. And in those days (B)the tribe of the Danites was seeking an inheritance for itself to dwell in; for until that day their inheritance among the tribes of Israel had not fallen to them. 2 So the children of Dan sent five men of their family from their territory, men of valor from (C)Zorah and Eshtaol, (D)to spy out the land and search it. They said to them, “Go, search the land.” So they went to the mountains of Ephraim, to the (E)house of Micah, and lodged there. 3 While they were at the house of Micah, they recognized the voice of the young Levite. They turned aside and said to him, “Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? What do you have here?”
4 He said to them, “Thus and so Micah did for me. He has (F)hired me, and I have become his priest.”

There were no rulers in the land who might put them to shame for anything. They were far from the (L)Sidonians, and they had no ties [b]with anyone.
8 Then the spies came back to their brethren at (M)Zorah and Eshtaol, and their brethren said to them, “What is your report?”
9 So they said, (N)“Arise, let us go up against them. For we have seen the land, and indeed it is very good. Would you (O)do nothing? Do not hesitate to go, and enter to possess the land. 10 When you go, you will come to a (P)secure people and a large land. For God has given it into your hands, (Q)a place where there is no lack of anything that is on the earth.”
11 And six hundred men of the family of the Danites went from there, from Zorah and Eshtaol, armed with weapons of war. 12 Then they went up and encamped in (R)Kirjath Jearim in Judah. (Therefore they call that place (S)Mahaneh Dan[c] to this day. There it is, west of Kirjath Jearim.) 13 And they passed from there to the mountains of Ephraim, and came to (T)the house of Micah.
14 (U)Then the five men who had gone to spy out the country of Laish answered and said to their brethren, “Do you know that (V)there are in these houses an ephod, household idols, a carved image, and a molded image? Now therefore, consider what you should do.” 15 So they turned aside there, and came to the house of the young Levite man—to the house of Micah—and greeted him. 16 The (W)six hundred men armed with their weapons of war, who were of the children of Dan, stood by the entrance of the gate. 17 Then (X)the five men who had gone to spy out the land went up. Entering there, they took (Y)the carved image, the ephod, the household idols, and the molded image. The priest stood at the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men who were armed with weapons of war.
18 When these went into Micah’s house and took the carved image, the ephod, the household idols, and the molded image, the priest said to them, “What are you doing?”
19 And they said to him, “Be quiet, (Z)put your hand over your mouth, and come with us; (AA)be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest to the household of one man, or that you be a priest to a tribe and a family in Israel?” 20 So the priest’s heart was glad; and he took the ephod, the household idols, and the carved image, and took his place among the people.
21 Then they turned and departed, and put the little ones, the livestock, and the goods in front of them. 22 When they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men who were in the houses near Micah’s house gathered together and overtook the children of Dan. 23 And they called out to the children of Dan. So they turned around and said to Micah, (AB)“What ails you, that you have gathered such a company?”
24 So he said, “You have (AC)taken away my [d]gods which I made, and the priest, and you have gone away. Now what more do I have? How can you say to me, ‘What ails you?’ ”
25 And the children of Dan said to him, “Do not let your voice be heard among us, lest [e]angry men fall upon you, and you lose your life, with the lives of your household!” 26 Then the children of Dan went their way. And when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his house.
Danites Settle in Laish
27 So they took the things Micah had made, and the priest who had belonged to him, and went to Laish, to a people quiet and secure; (AD)and they struck them with the edge of the sword and burned the city with fire. 28 There was no deliverer, because it was (AE)far from Sidon, and they had no ties with anyone. It was in the valley that belongs (AF)to Beth Rehob. So they rebuilt the city and dwelt there. 29 And (AG)they called the name of the city (AH)Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel. However, the name of the city formerly was Laish.
30 Then the children of Dan set up for themselves the carved image; and Jonathan the son of Gershom, the son of [f]Manasseh, and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan (AI)until the day of the captivity of the land. 31 So they set up for themselves Micah’s carved image which he made, (AJ)all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.
