Samson Defeats the Philistines
15 After some days, at the time of wheat harvest, Samson went to visit his wife with (A)a young goat. And he said, “I will go in to my wife in the chamber.” But her father would not allow him to go in. 2 And her father said, “I really thought that you utterly hated her, (B)so I gave her to your companion. Is not her younger sister more beautiful than she? Please take her instead.” 3 And Samson said to them, “This time I shall be innocent in regard to the Philistines, when I do them harm.” 4 So Samson went and caught 300 foxes and took torches. And he turned them tail to tail and put a torch between each pair of tails. 5 And when he had set fire to the torches, he let the foxes go into the standing grain of the Philistines and set fire to the stacked grain and the standing grain, as well as the olive orchards. 6 Then the Philistines said, “Who has done this?” And they said, “Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he has taken his wife (C)and given her to his companion.” And the Philistines came up and (D)burned her and her father with fire. 7 And Samson said to them, “If this is what you do, I swear I will be avenged on you, and after that I will quit.” 8 And he struck them hip and thigh with a great blow, and he went down and stayed in the (E)cleft of the rock of Etam.
9 Then the Philistines came up and encamped in Judah and (F)made a raid on (G)Lehi. 10 And the men of Judah said, “Why have you come up against us?” They said, “We have come up to bind Samson, to do to him as he did to us.” 11 Then 3,000 men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam, and said to Samson, “Do you not know that (H)the Philistines are rulers over us? What then is this that you have done to us?” And he said to them, “As they did to me, so have I done to them.” 12 And they said to him, “We have come down to bind you, that we may give you into the hands of the Philistines.” And Samson said to them, “Swear to me that you will not attack me yourselves.” 13 They said to him, “No; we will only bind you and give you into their hands. We will surely not kill you.” So they bound him with two (I)new ropes and brought him up from the rock.
14 When he came to Lehi, the Philistines came shouting to meet him. (J)Then the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, and the ropes that were on his arms became as flax that has caught fire, and his bonds melted off his hands. 15 And he found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, and put out his hand and took it, (K)and with it he struck 1,000 men. 16 And Samson said,
“With the jawbone of a donkey,
heaps upon heaps,
with the jawbone of a donkey
have I struck down a thousand men.”
17 As soon as he had finished speaking, he threw away the jawbone out of his hand. And that place (L)was called Ramath-lehi.[a]
18 And he was very thirsty, and he called upon the Lord and said, (M)“You have granted this great salvation by the hand of your servant, and shall I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?” 19 And God split open the hollow place that is (N)at Lehi, and water came out from it. And when he drank, (O)his spirit returned, and he revived. Therefore the name of it was called En-hakkore;[b] it is at Lehi to this day. 20 And he judged Israel (P)in the days of the Philistines twenty years.

15 4 Samson tieth firebrands to the foxes’ tails. 6 The Philistines burnt his father-in-law and his wife. 15 With the jawbone of an ass he killeth a thousand men. 19 Out of a great tooth in the jaw God gave him water.
1 But within a while after, in the time of wheat harvest, Samson visited his wife with a kid, saying, I will [a]go in to my wife into the chamber: but her father would not suffer him to go in.
2 And her father said, I thought that thou hadst hated her: therefore gave I her to thy companion. Is not her younger sister fairer than she? take her, I pray thee, instead of the other.
3 Then Samson said unto them, Now am I more [b]blameless than the Philistines: therefore will I do them displeasure.
4 ¶ And Samson went out, and took three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned them tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between two tails.
5 And when he had set the brands on fire, he sent them out into the standing corn of the Philistines, and burnt up both the [c]ricks and the standing corn, with the vineyards and olives.
6 Then the Philistines said, Who hath done this? And they answered, Samson the son-in-law of the [d]Timnite, because he had taken his wife, and given her to his companion. Then the Philistines came up and [e]burnt her and her father with fire.
7 And Samson said unto them, Though ye have done this, yet will I be avenged of you, and then I will cease.
8 So he smote them [f]hip and thigh with a mighty plague: then he went and dwelt in the top of the rock Etam.
9 ¶ Then the Philistines came up, and pitched in Judah, and [g]were spread abroad in Lehi.
10 And the men of Judah said, Why are ye come up unto us? And they answered, To [h]bind Samson are we come up, and to do to him as he hath done to us.
11 Then three thousand men of Judah went to the top of the rock Etam, and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? [i]Wherefore then hast thou done thus unto us? And he answered them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.
12 Again they said unto him, We are come to bind thee, and to deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And Samson said unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me yourselves.
13 And they answered him, saying, No, but we will bind thee and [j]deliver thee unto their hand, but we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him from the rock.
14 When he came to Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him, and the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms, became as flax that was burnt with fire: for the bands loosed from his hands.
15 And he found a [k]new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hands, and caught it, and slew a thousand men therewith.
16 Then Samson said, With the jaw of an ass are heaps upon heaps: with the jaw of an ass have I slain a thousand men.
17 And when he had left speaking, he cast away the jawbone out of his hand, and called that place, [l]Ramath Lehi.
18 And he was sore athirst, and [m]called on the Lord, and said, Thou hast given this great deliverance into the hand of thy servant: and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?
19 Then God brake the cheek tooth, that was in the jaw, and water came there out: and when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he was revived: wherefore the name thereof is called, [n]En Hakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.
20 And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.

শিম্শোন পলেষ্টীয়দের অসুবিধায় ফেলল
15 যখন গম তোলার সময় হল শিম্শোন তার স্ত্রীর সঙ্গে দেখা করতে গেল। স্ত্রীকে দেবার জন্যে একটা কচি পাঁঠা নিয়ে গেল। শ্বশুরকে গিয়ে বলল, “আমি স্ত্রীর ঘরে ঢুকছি।”
কিন্তু মেয়ের পিতা শিম্শোনকে ঢুকতে দিল না। 2 তার পিতা শিম্শোনকে বলল, “আমি ভেবেছিলাম তুমি তাকে ঘৃণা কর। তাই তার বিয়ে দিয়েছি একটি সেরা পাত্রের সঙ্গে। আমার ছোট মেয়ে আরও সুন্দরী। তুমি তাকেই নাও।”
3 শিম্শোন বলল, “এখন তোমাদের, মানে পলেষ্টীয়দের ওপর আঘাত হানলে কেউ আর আমাকে দোষ দিতে পারবে না।”
4 এই বলে শিম্শোন বেরিয়ে গেল। সে 300টি শেয়াল ধরল। সে দুটো করে শেয়াল ধরে তাদের লেজ দুটো বেঁধে জোড়া তৈরি করল। প্রত্যেক জোড়া শেয়ালের লেজে সে একটি করে মশাল বেঁধে দিল। 5 তারপর মশালগুলো জ্বেলে দিল। পলেষ্টীয়দের শস্যক্ষেত্রে সে ঐ শেয়ালগুলোকে ছুটিয়ে দিল। এইভাবে নতুন গজানো সমস্ত গাছ আর শস্যের গাদা সে জ্বালিয়ে দিল। দ্রাক্ষার ক্ষেত আর সমস্ত জলপাই গাছ জ্বালিয়ে দিল।
6 পলেষ্টীয়রা জিজ্ঞাসা করল, “কে এসব কাজ করেছে?”
কেউ একজন বলল, “শিমশোন করেছে। তিম্নার কোন একজনের জামাতা হচ্ছে এই শিম্শোন। তার এই কাজের কারণ তার শ্বশুর শিম্শোনের স্ত্রীকে অন্য এক সেরা পাত্রের সঙ্গে বিয়ে দিয়ে দিয়েছে।” তাই পলেষ্টীয়রা শিম্শোনের স্ত্রী আর শ্বশুরকে পুড়িয়ে মেরে ফেলল।
7 শিম্শোন পলেষ্টীয়দের বলল, “তোমরা আমার ক্ষতি করেছ; এবার আমিও তোমাদের ক্ষতি করব। তারপর আমার তোমাদের ওপর প্রতিশোধ নেওয়া বন্ধ হবে।”
8 তারপর শিম্শোন পলেষ্টীয়দের আক্রমণ করল। অনেক লোককে সে হত্যা করল। তারপর সে একটা গুহায় আশ্রয় নিল। গুহাটি ছিল ঐটম শিলা নামে একটি জায়গায়।
9 পলেষ্টীয়রা যিহূদায় চলে গেল। লিহী নামের একটি জায়গায় তারা বিশ্রাম নিল। তাদের সৈন্যরা সেখানে তাঁবু গাড়ল। তারা যুদ্ধের জন্য তৈরি হল। 10 যিহূদা পরিবারগোষ্ঠীর লোকরা তাদের জিজ্ঞাসা করল, “তোমরা পলেষ্টীয়রা কেন এখানে আমাদের সঙ্গে যুদ্ধ করতে এসেছ?”
তারা বলল, “আমরা শিম্শোনকে ধরতে এসেছি। আমরা তাকে বন্দী করতে চাই। সে আমাদের প্রতি যা অন্যায় করেছে তার জন্য তাকে শাস্তি দিতে চাই।”
11 যিহূদা পরিবারগোষ্ঠীর 3000 লোক তখন শিম্শোনের কাছে গেল। ঐটম শিলার গুহায় গিয়ে তারা তাকে বলল, “তুমি আমাদের এ কি করলে? তুমি কি জানো না যে পলেষ্টীয়রা আমাদের শাসন করছে?”
শিম্শোন বলল, “তারা আমার ওপর যে অন্যায় কাজ করেছে শুধুমাত্র তার জন্যেই আমি তাদের শাস্তি দিয়েছি।”
12 ওরা তখন বলল, “আমরা তোমাকে বেঁধে নিয়ে যাবার জন্য এসেছি। তোমাকে পলেষ্টীয়দের হাতে তুলে দেব।”
শিম্শোন বলল, “প্রতিশ্রুতি দাও তোমরা আমাকে মারবে না।”
13 ওরা বলল, “ঠিক আছে। আমরা শুধু তোমাকে বেঁধে পলেষ্টীয়দের কাছে ধরিয়ে দেব। প্রতিশ্রুতি দিচ্ছি, আমরা তোমায় হত্যা করব না।” এই বলে ওরা দুটো নতুন দড়ি দিয়ে শিম্শোনকে বেঁধে ফেলল। গুহা থেকে তাকে বার করে নিয়ে চলল।
14 শিম্শোন যখন লিহীতে এল, পলেষ্টীয়রা তাকে দেখতে এল। তারা আনন্দে চিৎকার করে উঠল। তখন প্রভুর আত্মা সবলে শিম্শোনের ওপর এল। দড়িগুলো পোড়া সূতোর মতো পলকা মনে হল এবং তার হাত থেকে খসে পড়ল। যেন সব গলে পড়েছে। 15 শিম্শোন একটা মরা গাধার চোয়ালের হাড় দেখতে পেল। হাড়টা নিয়ে তাই দিয়ে সে 1000 জন পলেষ্টীয়কে হত্যা করল।
16 তখন শিম্শোন বলল:
“গাধার একটি চোয়ালের হাড় দিয়েই
আমি 1000 লোক হত্যা করেছি।
একটি গাধার চোয়ালের হাড় দিয়ে
আমি তাদের মৃতদেহগুলি জড়ো করেছি।”
17 এই কথা বলে চোয়ালের হাড়টা শিম্শোন ছুঁড়ে ফেলে দিল। সেই জায়গার নাম রামৎ লিহী।
18 শিম্শোনের খুব পিপাসা পেয়েছিল। প্রভুর কাছে সে প্রার্থনা করল। সে বলল, “হে প্রভু আমি তোমার দাস। এই যে আমার বিরাট জয় হল, সে তো তোমারই দয়ায়। পিপাসায় যেন আমি মারা না যাই। তাই এখন দয়া করো তুমি। দয়া করো, যেন ওরা আমায় ধরে না ফেলে, যাদের এখনও সুন্নৎ পর্যন্ত হয় নি।”
19 লিহীর মাঠে একটা গর্ত আছে। ঈশ্বর সেই গর্ত ফাটিয়ে ঝর্ণা তৈরী করলেন। সেই জল পান করে শিম্শোন তাজা হয়ে উঠল। সে আবার শক্তি অনুভব করল। সে সেই ঝর্ণার নাম দিল এন-হক্কোরী। লিহী শহরে এই ঝর্ণা আজও আছে।
20 শিম্শোন 20 বছর ইস্রায়েলীয়দের বিচারক ছিল। সেটা ছিল পলেষ্টীয়দের রাজত্ব কাল।
