16 The descendants of Moses’ father-in-law,(A) the Kenite,(B) went up from the City of Palms[a](C) with the people of Judah to live among the inhabitants of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad.(D)

17 Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonites(E) their fellow Israelites and attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they totally destroyed[b] the city. Therefore it was called Hormah.[c](F) 18 Judah also took[d] Gaza,(G) Ashkelon(H) and Ekron—each city with its territory.

19 The Lord was with(I) the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country,(J) but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had chariots fitted with iron.(K) 20 As Moses had promised, Hebron(L) was given to Caleb, who drove from it the three sons of Anak.(M) 21 The Benjamites, however, did not drive out(N) the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem;(O) to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites.

22 Now the tribes of Joseph(P) attacked Bethel,(Q) and the Lord was with them. 23 When they sent men to spy out Bethel (formerly called Luz),(R) 24 the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, “Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well.(S) 25 So he showed them, and they put the city to the sword but spared(T) the man and his whole family. 26 He then went to the land of the Hittites,(U) where he built a city and called it Luz,(V) which is its name to this day.

27 But Manasseh did not(W) drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor(X) or Ibleam(Y) or Megiddo(Z) and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites(AA) were determined to live in that land. 28 When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely.(AB) 29 Nor did Ephraim(AC) drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer,(AD) but the Canaanites continued to live there among them.(AE) 30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, so these Canaanites lived among them, but Zebulun did subject them to forced labor. 31 Nor did Asher(AF) drive out those living in Akko or Sidon(AG) or Ahlab or Akzib(AH) or Helbah or Aphek(AI) or Rehob.(AJ) 32 The Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land because they did not drive them out. 33 Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh(AK) or Beth Anath(AL); but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them. 34 The Amorites(AM) confined the Danites(AN) to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain.(AO) 35 And the Amorites were determined also to hold out in Mount Heres,(AP) Aijalon(AQ) and Shaalbim,(AR) but when the power of the tribes of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labor. 36 The boundary of the Amorites was from Scorpion Pass(AS) to Sela(AT) and beyond.(AU)

Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman

Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John(A) although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. So he left Judea(B) and went back once more to Galilee.

Now he had to go through Samaria.(C) So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.(D) Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”(E) (His disciples had gone into the town(F) to buy food.)

The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan(G) woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.[a])

10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”(H)

11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well(I) and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”

13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.(J) Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water(K) welling up to eternal life.”(L)

15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty(M) and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”

17 “I have no husband,” she replied.

Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
