²¹ Each stood in his place around the camp; and ^(A)all the ^[a]army ran, crying out as they fled.

⁸ He struck them ^[a]ruthlessly with a great slaughter; and he went down and lived in the cleft of the rock of Etam.

¹⁵ He found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, so he ^[a]reached out and took it and ^[b]killed ^(A)a thousand men with it. ¹⁶ Then Samson said,

¹⁷ When he had finished speaking, he threw the jawbone from his hand; and he named that place ^[e]Ramath-lehi. ¹⁸ Then he became very thirsty, and he ^(B)called to the Lord and said, “You have given this great deliverance by the hand of Your servant, and now ^[f]shall I die of thirst ^[g]and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?” ¹⁹ But God split the hollow place that is in Lehi so that water came out of it. When he drank, ^(C)his ^[h]strength returned and he revived. Therefore he named it ^[i]En-hakkore, which is in Lehi to this day. ²⁰ So ^(D)he judged Israel twenty years in ^(E)the days of the Philistines.

⁵¹ Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and ^(A)took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it. ^(B)When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. ⁵² The men of Israel and Judah arose and shouted and pursued the Philistines ^[a]as far as the valley, and to the gates of ^(C)Ekron. And the slain Philistines ^[b]lay along the way to ^(D)Shaaraim, even to Gath and Ekron. ⁵³ The sons of Israel returned from chasing the Philistines and plundered their camps. ⁵⁴ Then David took the Philistine’s head and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his weapons in his tent.

⁵⁵ Now when Saul saw David going out against the Philistine, he said to Abner the commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is ^(E)this young man?” And Abner said, “By your life, O king, I do not know.” ⁵⁶ The king said, “You inquire whose son the youth is.” ⁵⁷ So when David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and ^(F)brought him before Saul with the Philistine’s head in his hand. ⁵⁸ Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” And David answered, “^(G)I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”

David’s Triumphs

8 ^(A)Now after this it came about that David ^[a]defeated the Philistines and subdued them; and David took ^[b]control of the chief city from the hand of the Philistines.

^2 (B)He ^[c]defeated ^(C)Moab, and measured them with the line, making them lie down on the ground; and he measured two lines to put to death and one full line to keep alive. And ^(D)the Moabites became servants to David, ^(E)bringing tribute.

³ Then David ^[d]defeated ^(F)Hadadezer, the son of Rehob king of Zobah, as ^(G)he went to restore his ^[e]rule at the ^[f]River. ⁴ David captured from him 1,700 horsemen and 20,000 foot soldiers; and David ^(H)hamstrung the chariot horses, but reserved enough of them for 100 chariots. ⁵ When ^(I)the Arameans of Damascus came to help Hadadezer, king of Zobah, David ^[g]killed 22,000 Arameans. ⁶ Then David put garrisons among the Arameans of Damascus, and ^(J)the Arameans became servants to David, bringing tribute. And ^(K)the Lord helped David wherever he went.

¹⁵ When the Arameans saw that they had been ^[a]defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together. ^16 (A)And Hadadezer sent and brought out the Arameans who were beyond the ^[b]River, and they came to Helam; and ^(B)Shobach the commander of the army of Hadadezer ^[c]led them. ¹⁷ Now when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Arameans arrayed themselves to meet David and fought against him. ¹⁸ But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed ^(C)700 charioteers of the Arameans and 40,000 horsemen and struck down Shobach the commander of their army, and he died there. ¹⁹ When all the kings, servants of Hadadezer, saw that they were ^[d]defeated by Israel, ^(D)they made peace with Israel and served them. So the Arameans feared to help the sons of Ammon anymore.
