New King James Version
2 and the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel. Because of the Midianites, the children of Israel made for themselves the dens, (A)the caves, and the strongholds which are in the mountains. 3 So it was, whenever Israel had sown, Midianites would come up; also Amalekites and the (B)people of the East would come up against them. 4 Then they would encamp against them and (C)destroy the produce of the earth as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep nor ox nor (D)donkey.

2 Because the power of Midian was so oppressive,(A) the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in mountain clefts, caves(B) and strongholds.(C) 3 Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites(D) and other eastern peoples(E) invaded the country. 4 They camped on the land and ruined the crops(F) all the way to Gaza(G) and did not spare a living thing for Israel, neither sheep nor cattle nor donkeys.
