Deborah Becomes Israel’s Judge
4 After Ehud’s death, the Israelites again did evil in the Lord’s sight. 2 So the Lord turned them over to King Jabin of Hazor, a Canaanite king. The commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth-haggoyim. 3 Sisera, who had 900 iron chariots, ruthlessly oppressed the Israelites for twenty years. Then the people of Israel cried out to the Lord for help.
4 Deborah, the wife of Lappidoth, was a prophet who was judging Israel at that time. 5 She would sit under the Palm of Deborah, between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites would go to her for judgment. 6 One day she sent for Barak son of Abinoam, who lived in Kedesh in the land of Naphtali. She said to him, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, commands you: Call out 10,000 warriors from the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun at Mount Tabor. 7 And I will call out Sisera, commander of Jabin’s army, along with his chariots and warriors, to the Kishon River. There I will give you victory over him.”
8 Barak told her, “I will go, but only if you go with me.”
9 “Very well,” she replied, “I will go with you. But you will receive no honor in this venture, for the Lord’s victory over Sisera will be at the hands of a woman.” So Deborah went with Barak to Kedesh. 10 At Kedesh, Barak called together the tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali, and 10,000 warriors went up with him. Deborah also went with him.
11 Now Heber the Kenite, a descendant of Moses’ brother-in-law[a] Hobab, had moved away from the other members of his tribe and pitched his tent by the oak of Zaanannim near Kedesh.
12 When Sisera was told that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor, 13 he called for all 900 of his iron chariots and all of his warriors, and they marched from Harosheth-haggoyim to the Kishon River.
14 Then Deborah said to Barak, “Get ready! This is the day the Lord will give you victory over Sisera, for the Lord is marching ahead of you.” So Barak led his 10,000 warriors down the slopes of Mount Tabor into battle. 15 When Barak attacked, the Lord threw Sisera and all his chariots and warriors into a panic. Sisera leaped down from his chariot and escaped on foot. 16 Then Barak chased the chariots and the enemy army all the way to Harosheth-haggoyim, killing all of Sisera’s warriors. Not a single one was left alive.
17 Meanwhile, Sisera ran to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, because Heber’s family was on friendly terms with King Jabin of Hazor. 18 Jael went out to meet Sisera and said to him, “Come into my tent, sir. Come in. Don’t be afraid.” So he went into her tent, and she covered him with a blanket.
19 “Please give me some water,” he said. “I’m thirsty.” So she gave him some milk from a leather bag and covered him again.
20 “Stand at the door of the tent,” he told her. “If anybody comes and asks you if there is anyone here, say no.”
21 But when Sisera fell asleep from exhaustion, Jael quietly crept up to him with a hammer and tent peg in her hand. Then she drove the tent peg through his temple and into the ground, and so he died.
22 When Barak came looking for Sisera, Jael went out to meet him. She said, “Come, and I will show you the man you are looking for.” So he followed her into the tent and found Sisera lying there dead, with the tent peg through his temple.
23 So on that day Israel saw God defeat Jabin, the Canaanite king. 24 And from that time on Israel became stronger and stronger against King Jabin until they finally destroyed him.
The Song of Deborah
5 On that day Deborah and Barak son of Abinoam sang this song:
2 “Israel’s leaders took charge,
and the people gladly followed.
Praise the Lord!
3 “Listen, you kings!
Pay attention, you mighty rulers!
For I will sing to the Lord.
I will make music to the Lord, the God of Israel.
4 “Lord, when you set out from Seir
and marched across the fields of Edom,
the earth trembled,
and the cloudy skies poured down rain.
5 The mountains quaked in the presence of the Lord,
the God of Mount Sinai—
in the presence of the Lord,
the God of Israel.
6 “In the days of Shamgar son of Anath,
and in the days of Jael,
people avoided the main roads,
and travelers stayed on winding pathways.
7 There were few people left in the villages of Israel[b]—
until Deborah arose as a mother for Israel.
8 When Israel chose new gods,
war erupted at the city gates.
Yet not a shield or spear could be seen
among forty thousand warriors in Israel!
9 My heart is with the commanders of Israel,
with those who volunteered for war.
Praise the Lord!
10 “Consider this, you who ride on fine donkeys,
you who sit on fancy saddle blankets,
and you who walk along the road.
11 Listen to the village musicians[c]
gathered at the watering holes.
They recount the righteous victories of the Lord
and the victories of his villagers in Israel.
Then the people of the Lord
marched down to the city gates.
12 “Wake up, Deborah, wake up!
Wake up, wake up, and sing a song!
Arise, Barak!
Lead your captives away, son of Abinoam!
13 “Down from Tabor marched the few against the nobles.
The people of the Lord marched down against mighty warriors.
14 They came down from Ephraim—
a land that once belonged to the Amalekites;
they followed you, Benjamin, with your troops.
From Makir the commanders marched down;
from Zebulun came those who carry a commander’s staff.
15 The princes of Issachar were with Deborah and Barak.
They followed Barak, rushing into the valley.
But in the tribe of Reuben
there was great indecision.[d]
16 Why did you sit at home among the sheepfolds—
to hear the shepherds whistle for their flocks?
Yes, in the tribe of Reuben
there was great indecision.
17 Gilead remained east of the Jordan.
And why did Dan stay home?
Asher sat unmoved at the seashore,
remaining in his harbors.
18 But Zebulun risked his life,
as did Naphtali, on the heights of the battlefield.
19 “The kings of Canaan came and fought,
at Taanach near Megiddo’s springs,
but they carried off no silver treasures.
20 The stars fought from heaven.
The stars in their orbits fought against Sisera.
21 The Kishon River swept them away—
that ancient torrent, the Kishon.
March on with courage, my soul!
22 Then the horses’ hooves hammered the ground,
the galloping, galloping of Sisera’s mighty steeds.
23 ‘Let the people of Meroz be cursed,’ said the angel of the Lord.
‘Let them be utterly cursed,
because they did not come to help the Lord—
to help the Lord against the mighty warriors.’
24 “Most blessed among women is Jael,
the wife of Heber the Kenite.
May she be blessed above all women who live in tents.
25 Sisera asked for water,
and she gave him milk.
In a bowl fit for nobles,
she brought him yogurt.
26 Then with her left hand she reached for a tent peg,
and with her right hand for the workman’s hammer.
She struck Sisera with the hammer, crushing his head.
With a shattering blow, she pierced his temples.
27 He sank, he fell,
he lay still at her feet.
And where he sank,
there he died.
28 “From the window Sisera’s mother looked out.
Through the window she watched for his return, saying,
‘Why is his chariot so long in coming?
Why don’t we hear the sound of chariot wheels?’
29 “Her wise women answer,
and she repeats these words to herself:
30 ‘They must be dividing the captured plunder—
with a woman or two for every man.
There will be colorful robes for Sisera,
and colorful, embroidered robes for me.
Yes, the plunder will include
colorful robes embroidered on both sides.’
31 “Lord, may all your enemies die like Sisera!
But may those who love you rise like the sun in all its power!”
Then there was peace in the land for forty years.

Si Debora ug si Barak

Ang komander sa kasundalohan ni Jabin mao si Sisera nga nagpuyo sa Haroshet Hagoyim. 3 Si Jabin may 900 ka mga karwahe nga puthaw. Gidaog-daog niya pag-ayo ang mga Israelinhon sulod sa 20 ka tuig. Pag-abot ni Barak, miingon si Debora kaniya, “Ang Ginoo, ang Dios sa Israel nagsugo kanimo nga magtigom ug 10,000 ka mga lalaki gikan sa tribo ni Naftali ug ni Zebulun. 8 Miingon si Barak kang Debora, “Moadto ako kon mouban ka, apan kon dili ka mouban, dili ako moadto.” 9 Mitubag si Debora, “Sige, mouban ako kanimo, apan ang kadungganan dili maimo tungod kay itugyan sa Ginoo si Sisera sa usa ka babaye.” Busa miuban si Debora kang Barak ug miadto sila sa Kedesh. 10 Gipaadto ni Barak sa Kedesh ang mga sakop sa tribo ni Naftali ug ni Zebulun, ug 10,000 ka mga tawo ang nanguban kaniya. Miuban usab kaniya si Debora.
11 Niadtong higayona, si Heber nga usa ka Kenihanon nagtukod sa iyang tolda duol sa dakong kahoy sa Zaananim duol sa Kedesh. Mibulag siya sa iyang mga kaubang Kenihanon nga mga kaliwat ni Hobab nga bayaw[a] ni Moises.
12 May nakasugilon kang Sisera nga si Barak, nga anak ni Abinoam, mitungas sa Bukid sa Tabor. 13 Busa gitigom ni Sisera ang 900 niya ka karwahe nga puthaw ug ang tanan niyang mga sundalo. Ug gikan sa Haroshet Hagoyim miadto sila sa Lugut sa Kishon.
14 Miingon si Debora kang Barak, “Lakaw na! Mao na kini ang adlaw nga itugyan sa Ginoo kanimo si Sisera. Magauna ang Ginoo kanimo.” Busa milugsong si Barak gikan sa Bukid sa Tabor ug misunod kaniya ang 10,000 ka mga sundalo. 15 Sa dihang misulong na sila si[b] Barak, gipataranta sa Ginoo si Sisera ug ang tanan niyang mga tigkarwahe ug mga sundalo. Miambak si Sisera sa iyang karwahe ug misutoy ug dagan aron sa pag-ikyas. 16 Gigukod nila ni[c] Barak ang mga sundalo ni Sisera apil ang iyang mga tigkarwahe hangtod sa Haroshet Hagoyim ug gihurot ug pamatay. Wala gayoy bisan usa nga nahibilin.
17 Midagan si Sisera paingon sa tolda ni Jael nga asawa ni Heber, tungod kay managhigala si Jabin nga hari sa Hazor ug ang pamilya ni Heber nga Kenihanon. 18 Gisugat siya ni Jael ug giingnan, “Sir, dayon sa akong tolda ug ayaw kahadlok.” Busa misulod si Sisera ug gitabonan siya ni Jael ug bagang habol.[d] 19 Miingon si Sisera kang Jael, “Palihog hatagi akog tubig. Giuhaw kaayo ako.” Busa giablihan ni Jael ang usa ka panit nga sudlanan sa gatas ug gipainom si Sisera, ug pagkahuman gitabonan niyag balik si Sisera. 20 Miingon si Sisera, “Tindog diha sa pultahan sa tolda ug kon may moabot ug mangutana kon may tawo bang mianhi dinhi ingna nga wala.”
21 Tungod sa labihang kakapoy, nakatulog si Sisera. Mikuha si Jael ug martilyo ug ugsok sa tolda ug mihinay-hinay pagduol kang Sisera. Unya gipataop niya ang ugsok sa dunggan-dunggan[e] ni Sisera hangtod nga midulot kini sa yuta, ug namatay si Sisera.
22 Sa pag-abot ni Barak nga nangita kang Sisera, gisugat siya ni Jael ug giingnan, “Dali, ipakita ko kanimo ang imong gipangita.” Busa miuban si Barak kang Jael sa sulod, ug didto nakita niya si Sisera nga patay na, ug may ugsok nga nagtaop sa iyang dungan-dungan. 23 Nianang adlawa, gipapildi sa Dios sa mga Israelinhon si Jabin nga hari sa Canaan. 24 Nagpadayon ang ilang pagpakigbatok kang Jabin hangtod nga napatay gayod nila kini.
Ang Awit ni Debora ug ni Barak
5 Sa adlaw sa ilang kadaogan, miawit si Debora ug si Barak nga anak ni Abinoam. Mao kini ang ilang giawit:
2 Ang mga pangulo sa Israel madasigong nanguna sa pagpakiggira ug ang mga Israelinhon kinabubut-on nga misunod kanila.
Dayegon ang Ginoo!
3 Pamati kamong mga hari ug mga pangulo!
Magaawit ako ug mga pagdayeg sa Ginoo, ang Dios sa Israel!
4 O Ginoo, sa dihang mibiya ka sa Bukid sa Seir, sa yuta sa Edom, milinog ug miulan ug kusog.
5 Natay-og ang mga bukid sa imong presensya, O Ginoo.
Ikaw ang Dios sa Israel nga nagpadayag sa imong kaugalingon didto sa Bukid sa Sinai.
6 Sa panahon ni Shamgar nga anak ni Anat, ug sa panahon usab ni Jael, wala nay miagi sa dagkong mga dalan.
Ang mga biyahedor didto na miagi sa mga hilit-hilit nga mga agianan.
7 Gamay nalang ang nagapuyo sa mga lungsod sa Israel, hangtod nga miabot ka, Debora, ikaw nga giila nga inahan sa Israel.
8 Sa dihang misimba sila ug bag-ong mga dios, miabot ang gira sa tibuok Israel.
Apan sa 40,000 ka mga Israelinhon walay bisan usa nga may taming o bangkaw.
9 Nalipay ako sa mga pangulo sa Israel ug sa katawhan nga malipayon nga mihatag sa ilang kaugalingon.
Dayegon ang Ginoo!
10 Kamong mga adunahan nga nagasakay sa puti nga mga asno ug nagalingkod sa matahom nga mga lingkoranan niini,
ug kamong mga kabos nga nagalakaw sa dalan, paminaw kamo!
11 Paminawa ninyo ang mga sugilanon sa mga tawo didto sa mga atabay.
Nagasugilon sila sa mga kadaogan[f] sa Dios pinaagi sa iyang mga sundalo sa Israel.
Unya nangadto ang mga katawhan sa Ginoo sa mga pultahan sa lungsod ug miingon,
12 “Tindog Debora, ug pag-awit!
Lakaw Barak, nga anak ni Abinoam, ug bihaga ang imong bihagonon.”
13 Ang mga nahibiling katawhan sa Ginoo milugsong kauban ko sa pagpakiggira batok sa halangdon ug maisog nga mga tawo.
14 Ang uban kanila gikan sa Efraim—ang yuta nga gipanag-iyahan kaniadto sa mga Amalekanhon—ug ang uban pa gayod gikan sa tribo ni Benjamin.
Miuban usab sa pagpakiggira ang mga pangulo nga gikan sa Makir ug sa tribo ni Zebulun.
15 Miuban usab ang mga pangulo sa tribo ni Isacar kang Debora ug kang Barak paingon sa kapatagan.
Apan ang tribo ni Reuben wala nakahukom kon unsay angay nilang buhaton.
16 Tribo ni Reuben, nganong nagpabilin man kamo uban sa mga karnero?
Aron ba mamati sa pagpanawag sa mga magbalantay sa karnero?
Ang tribo ni Reuben wala nakahukom kon unsay angay nilang buhaton.
17 Nagpabilin ang tribo ni Gad[g] sa sidlakang bahin sa Suba sa Jordan,
ug ang tribo ni Dan nagpabilin sa pagtrabaho sa mga barko.
Ang tribo ni Asher nagpabilin sa kabaybayonan duol sa dunggoanan sa mga barko.
18 Apan gitahan sa tribo ni Zebulun ug ni Naftali ang ilang kinabuhi sa pagpakiggira.
19 Miabot ang mga hari nga Canaanhon ug nakiggira sa mga Israelinhon didto sa Taanak nga anaa sa daplin sa katubigan sa Megido,
apan wala silay nailog nga pilak.
20 Dili lang ang Israel ang nakiggira kanila ni Sisera, apil usab bisan ang kagamhanan sa langit nakiggira uban kanila.
21 Ug gianod sila sa sulog sa karaang Lugut sa Kishon.
Magpadayon ako sa pagpakiggira uban ang kalig-on!
22 Unya nagadahunog ang tunob sa nagadagan nga mga kabayo.
23 Miingon ang anghel sa Ginoo, “Panghimaraota ang Meroz!
Panghimaraota gayod ang tanang nagpuyo didto kay wala sila motabang sa Ginoo sa pagpakiggira batok sa maisog nga mga kaaway.”
24 Labing bulahan si Jael nga asawa ni Heber nga Kenihanon sa tanang mga babaye nga nagapuyo sa mga tolda.
25 Sa dihang nangayo ug tubig si Sisera, gatas nga gibutang sa mahalon nga sudlanan ang iyang gihatag.
26 Unya mikuha siya ug martilyo ug ugsok sa tolda ug gipataop ang ugsok sa dungan-dungan ni Sisera.
27 Ug namatay si Sisera sa tiilan ni Jael.
28 Nagpanglantaw ang inahan ni Sisera gikan sa renehasan nga bintana; wala siya mahimutang, ug nagsigeg pangutana kon nganong dugayng miabot ang karwahe sa iyang anak.
29 Mitubag ang iyang labing maalamong mga kababayen-an, ug mao usab kini ang iyang gibalik-balik pagsulti sa iyang kaugalingon,
30 “Nadugay lang tingali sila sa pagpanguha ug pagbahin sa mga butang nga nailog nila sa ilang mga kaaway—usa o duha ka babaye alang sa matag sundalo, mahalon nga bisti alang kang Sisera, ug binordahan usab nga bisti alang kanako.”
31 “Busa Ginoo, hinaut nga malaglag ang imong mga kaaway.
Apan hinaut nga ang mga nagahigugma kanimo mahisama sa adlaw nga nagasidlak pag-ayo.”
Ug ang mga Israelinhon nagkinabuhi nga malinawon sulod sa 40 ka tuig.
