Israel Worships the Baals

11 The Israelites[a] did evil in the eyes of Yahweh, and they served[b] the Baals. 12 They abandoned Yahweh the God of their ancestors,[c] who brought them out from the land of Egypt. They followed[d] other gods from the gods of the people who were around them; and they bowed down to them, and they provoked the anger of Yahweh. 13 They abandoned Yahweh, and they served Baal and the Ashtaroth. 14 So the anger of Yahweh was kindled[e] against Israel, and he gave them into the hand of plunderers; and they plundered them, and he sold them into the hand of their enemies from all sides. They were unable to withstand their enemies any longer. 15 Whenever[f] they went out, the hand of Yahweh was against them to harm them, just as Yahweh warned, and just as Yahweh had sworn to them. And they were very distressed.[g]

16 Then Yahweh raised up leaders,[h] and they delivered them from the hand of their plunderers. 17 But they did not listen to their leaders,[i] but lusted after other gods and bowed down to them. They turned away quickly from the way that their ancestors[j] went, who had obeyed the commandment of Yahweh; they did not do as their ancestors. 18 And when Yahweh raised leaders[k] for them, Yahweh was with the leader,[l] and he delivered them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the leader,[m] for Yahweh was moved by their groaning because of their persecutors and oppressors. 19 But when the leader[n] died they relapsed and acted corruptly, more than their ancestors,[o] following other gods, serving them,[p] and bowing down to them. They would not give up their deeds or their stubborn ways.

Israel Serves the Baals

11 Then the sons of Israel did (A)evil in the sight of the Lord and [a]served the (B)Baals, 12 and (C)they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they followed other gods from the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed down to them; so they provoked the Lord to anger. 13 They abandoned the Lord and (D)served Baal and the Ashtaroth. 14 (E)Then the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He handed them over to plunderers, and they plundered them; and (F)He sold them into the hands of their enemies around them, so that they could no longer stand [b]against their enemies. 15 Wherever they went, the hand of the Lord was against them for [c]evil, as the Lord had spoken and (G)just as the Lord had sworn to them, so that they were severely distressed.

16 (H)Then the Lord raised up judges [d]who saved them from the hands of those who plundered them. 17 Yet they did not listen to their judges, for they [e]committed infidelity with other gods and bowed down to them. They turned aside quickly from the way (I)in which their fathers had walked in obeying the commandments of the Lord; they did not do the same as their fathers. 18 And when the Lord raised up judges for them, (J)the Lord was with the judge and saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord was (K)moved to pity by their groaning because of those who tormented and oppressed them. 19 But it came about, when the judge died, that they would turn back and act more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them and bow down to them; they did not abandon their practices or their obstinate ways.

11 Then the Israelites did evil(A) in the eyes of the Lord(B) and served the Baals.(C) 12 They forsook the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. 16 Then the Lord raised up judges,[a](Q) who saved(R) them out of the hands of these raiders. 17 Yet they would not listen to their judges but prostituted(S) themselves to other gods(T) and worshiped them.(U) They quickly turned(V) from the ways of their ancestors, who had been obedient to the Lord’s commands.(W) 18 Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved(X) them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the Lord relented(Y) because of their groaning(Z) under those who oppressed and afflicted(AA) them. 19 But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt(AB) than those of their ancestors,(AC) following other gods and serving and worshiping them.(AD) They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn(AE) ways.
