14 She must not eat anything that comes from vines.[a] She must not drink wine or beer. She must not eat any food that is unclean. She must obey everything that I have commanded her to do.’

15 Manoah said to the Lord's angel, ‘Please stay here with us. We would like to cook a young goat for you to eat.’

16 The angel replied, ‘Even if I stay with you, I will not eat your food. But you may prepare a burnt offering as a sacrifice to the Lord.’ The angel said that because Manoah had not realized that he was the Lord's angel.

  1. 13:14 Grapes grew on vines, and they used grapes to make wine. The angel told Manoah's wife that she must not eat any grapes or dried grapes (raisins).

15 Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, “We would like you to stay until we prepare a young goat(C) for you.”

16 The angel of the Lord replied, “Even though you detain me, I will not eat any of your food. But if you prepare a burnt offering,(D) offer it to the Lord.” (Manoah did not realize(E) that it was the angel of the Lord.)
