3 So Jephthah left[a] his half brothers[b] and lived in the land of Tob. Lawless men joined Jephthah’s gang and traveled with him.[c]
4 It was some time after this when the Ammonites fought with Israel. 5 When the Ammonites attacked,[d] the leaders[e] of Gilead asked Jephthah to come back[f] from the land of Tob.

3 So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob,(A) where a gang of scoundrels(B) gathered around him and followed him.
4 Some time later, when the Ammonites(C) were fighting against Israel, 5 the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob.
