Expanded Bible
3 So Jephthah ran away from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob [C region northeast of Gilead; 2 Sam. 10:6, 8]. There some ·worthless [good-for-nothing; trouble-making] men began to ·follow [or travel with] him.
4 After a time the ·Ammonites [L sons/descendants of Ammon] fought against Israel. 5 When the ·Ammonites [L sons/descendants of Ammon] made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to Jephthah to bring him back from Tob.

New International Version
3 So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob,(A) where a gang of scoundrels(B) gathered around him and followed him.
4 Some time later, when the Ammonites(C) were fighting against Israel, 5 the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob.
