11 1-2 さて、エフタはギルアデ出身の勇士でしたが、母親は売春婦でした。父ギルアデには、正妻の産んだ数人の息子がいました。息子たちは成長すると、腹違いの兄弟エフタを、ギルアデの地から追い出しました。「売春婦の子に、父の財産などこれっぽっちもやるわけにはいかない」というわけです。 3 エフタは父の家を飛び出し、トブの地に移り住みました。まもなく、そこでならず者たちを従えるようになり、盗みを働いて日々を送っていました。
4 そんな時、アモン人がイスラエルに宣戦布告してきたのです。 5 ギルアデの要人たちはエフタを呼びにやり、 6 指揮官としてアモン人と戦ってくれるように頼みました。 7 しかし、エフタは冷ややかに答えるばかりでした。「私を憎むあまりに父の家から追い出しておきながら、どうしてここへ来たのです。自分たちが困ったからって、今さらよくも来られたものですね。」
8 「どうしてもおまえに帰ってもらいたいんだ。もし総指揮官としてアモン軍と戦ってくれたら、ギルアデの住民のかしらになってもらう。」
9 「ほんとうかな。とても信じられないが。」
10 「主にかけて誓う。」
11 こう言われて、エフタも気を変え、彼らの願いどおり総指揮官となり、彼らのかしらになりました。この契約は、人々がミツパに集まった時、主の前で結ばれました。
12 エフタはアモン人の王に使者を送り、イスラエルへの攻撃の理由を尋ねました。 13 すると、「そこは、もともとアモン人の土地だったのだ」という返事で、エジプトから移って来たイスラエルが、アルノン川からヤボク川、ヨルダン川に至るアモン人の全領地を奪い取ってしまったというのです。「すみやかに、われわれの土地を返してくれ」と、アモン人の王は要求してきました。
14-15 エフタは答えました。「イスラエルはその土地を奪ってはいない。 16 真相はこうだ。イスラエル人がエジプトを出て紅海を渡り、旅を続けてカデシュに来た時、 17 エドムの王に使者を送り、その領地を通過する許可を求めた。しかし聞き入れてもらえなかった。モアブの王にも同様の許可を求めたが、やはり断られ、やむなくカデシュにとどまった。
18 それでも、とうとうイスラエルは荒野に出て、エドムとモアブの地を迂回し、その東の境に沿って旅を続け、モアブの境界線であるアルノン川の向こうに着いた。ただし、モアブの領地には決して入らなかった。
19 それからイスラエルは、ヘシュボンに住むエモリ人の王シホンに使者を送り、目的地に行くため領地内を通らせてほしいと頼んだ。 20 しかし王はイスラエルを信用せず、ヤハツに兵を集結させ、攻撃をしかけてきた。 21-22 しかしイスラエルの神、主は、われわれに力を貸し、王とその国民を打ってくださった。それでイスラエルは、アルノン川からヤボク川までと、荒野からヨルダン川までの、エモリ人の全地を手中に収めたのだ。
23 このように、この土地をエモリ人から取り上げてイスラエルに与えてくださったのは、われわれの神、主なのだ。それなのにどうして、あなたたちに返さなければならないのか。 24 そちらはそちらで、自分たちの神ケモシュが与えてくれるものを、しっかり守ればよいだろう。われわれは、主が下さったものを大事にしたいのだ。 25 いったい、あなたがたはモアブの王バラクより偉いつもりか。バラクはイスラエルに打ち負かされたあと、土地を取り返そうとしたか。もちろん、しなかった。 26 今さら三百年も昔のことを問題にしてどうなる。イスラエルは三百年もここに住み、ヘシュボンからアロエルに至る一帯へ、またアルノン川沿岸の全域へと広がっていったのだ。その気があるなら、どうしてもっと早く取り戻そうとしなかったのか。 27 こちらは何も悪いことをした覚えはない。それなのに、そちらが勝手に戦いを挑んできて悪事を働こうとしている。しかしもうじき、どちらが正しいか、主がはっきりさせてくださるだろう。」
28 アモン人の王は、エフタのことばに全く耳を貸しませんでした。
29 その時、主の霊がエフタに下りました。エフタは兵を率いてギルアデとマナセの地を通り、ギルアデのミツパからアモン軍を攻撃しました。 30-31 一方、エフタはこう主に誓ったのです。「もしあなたの助けによってアモン人を打ち破り、無事に帰還できたなら、私の家から最初に迎えに出た者を、焼き尽くすいけにえとしてささげます。」
32 エフタは兵を率いてアモン人と戦い、勝利を収めました。 33 そして、アロエルからミニテにかけての二十の町と、アベル・ケラミムに至るまで徹底的にアモン人を打ちました。こうして、ついにアモン人はイスラエルに屈服したのです。
34 エフタが家に戻った時、なんと彼のひとり娘が家から出て来て、大喜びでタンバリンを鳴らし、踊りながら駆け寄って来ました。 35 娘を見て、エフタは胸を引き裂かれる思いで着物を引きちぎり、叫びました。「ああ、なぜこんなむごいことに！ いったん主に誓いを立てたからには、もう取り消すわけにはいかないのだ。」
36 すると娘は言いました。「お父様、どうか主にお誓いになったとおりになさってください。主は敵のアモン人をやっつけて、こんなすばらしい勝利をもたらしてくださったのですもの。 37 ただ、二か月の間、私を女友達と山に行かせ、さまよい歩かせてください。結婚もしないで終わることを泣き悲しみたいのです。」
38 「ああ、ああ。行くがいい。」
そこで彼女は、自らの運命を友達とともに嘆きながら、二か月間さまよいました。 39 二か月が過ぎて戻って来た娘を、エフタは誓願どおり主にささげました。〔ただし、いけにえとして実際に殺されたのか、処女のままで主に生涯をささげたのかは不明。〕こののちイスラエルでは、 40 毎年四日間、若い娘たちは出て行って、エフタの娘のために嘆き悲しむというしきたりができました。

11 Jephthah(A) the Gileadite was a mighty warrior.(B) His father was Gilead;(C) his mother was a prostitute.(D) 2 Gilead’s wife also bore him sons, and when they were grown up, they drove Jephthah away. “You are not going to get any inheritance in our family,” they said, “because you are the son of another woman.” 3 So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob,(E) where a gang of scoundrels(F) gathered around him and followed him.
4 Some time later, when the Ammonites(G) were fighting against Israel, 5 the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob. 6 “Come,” they said, “be our commander, so we can fight the Ammonites.”
7 Jephthah said to them, “Didn’t you hate me and drive me from my father’s house?(H) Why do you come to me now, when you’re in trouble?”
8 The elders of Gilead said to him, “Nevertheless, we are turning to you now; come with us to fight the Ammonites, and you will be head(I) over all of us who live in Gilead.”
9 Jephthah answered, “Suppose you take me back to fight the Ammonites and the Lord gives them to me—will I really be your head?”
10 The elders of Gilead replied, “The Lord is our witness;(J) we will certainly do as you say.” 11 So Jephthah went with the elders(K) of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And he repeated(L) all his words before the Lord in Mizpah.(M)
12 Then Jephthah sent messengers to the Ammonite king with the question: “What do you have against me that you have attacked my country?”
13 The king of the Ammonites answered Jephthah’s messengers, “When Israel came up out of Egypt, they took away my land from the Arnon(N) to the Jabbok,(O) all the way to the Jordan. Now give it back peaceably.”
14 Jephthah sent back messengers to the Ammonite king, 15 saying:
“This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not take the land of Moab(P) or the land of the Ammonites.(Q) 16 But when they came up out of Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea[a](R) and on to Kadesh.(S) 17 Then Israel sent messengers(T) to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Give us permission to go through your country,’(U) but the king of Edom would not listen. They sent also to the king of Moab,(V) and he refused.(W) So Israel stayed at Kadesh.
18 “Next they traveled through the wilderness, skirted the lands of Edom(X) and Moab, passed along the eastern side(Y) of the country of Moab, and camped on the other side of the Arnon.(Z) They did not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was its border.
19 “Then Israel sent messengers(AA) to Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon,(AB) and said to him, ‘Let us pass through your country to our own place.’(AC) 20 Sihon, however, did not trust Israel[b] to pass through his territory. He mustered all his troops and encamped at Jahaz and fought with Israel.(AD)
21 “Then the Lord, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and his whole army into Israel’s hands, and they defeated them. Israel took over all the land of the Amorites who lived in that country, 22 capturing all of it from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert to the Jordan.(AE)
23 “Now since the Lord, the God of Israel, has driven the Amorites out before his people Israel, what right have you to take it over? 24 Will you not take what your god Chemosh(AF) gives you? Likewise, whatever the Lord our God has given us,(AG) we will possess. 25 Are you any better than Balak son of Zippor,(AH) king of Moab? Did he ever quarrel with Israel or fight with them?(AI) 26 For three hundred years Israel occupied(AJ) Heshbon, Aroer,(AK) the surrounding settlements and all the towns along the Arnon. Why didn’t you retake them during that time? 27 I have not wronged you, but you are doing me wrong by waging war against me. Let the Lord, the Judge,(AL) decide(AM) the dispute this day between the Israelites and the Ammonites.(AN)”
28 The king of Ammon, however, paid no attention to the message Jephthah sent him.
29 Then the Spirit(AO) of the Lord came on Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed through Mizpah(AP) of Gilead, and from there he advanced against the Ammonites.(AQ) 30 And Jephthah made a vow(AR) to the Lord: “If you give the Ammonites into my hands, 31 whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph(AS) from the Ammonites will be the Lord’s, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.(AT)”
32 Then Jephthah went over to fight the Ammonites, and the Lord gave them into his hands. 33 He devastated twenty towns from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith,(AU) as far as Abel Keramim. Thus Israel subdued Ammon.
34 When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing(AV) to the sound of timbrels!(AW) She was an only child.(AX) Except for her he had neither son nor daughter. 35 When he saw her, he tore his clothes(AY) and cried, “Oh no, my daughter! You have brought me down and I am devastated. I have made a vow to the Lord that I cannot break.(AZ)”
36 “My father,” she replied, “you have given your word to the Lord. Do to me just as you promised,(BA) now that the Lord has avenged you(BB) of your enemies,(BC) the Ammonites. 37 But grant me this one request,” she said. “Give me two months to roam the hills and weep with my friends, because I will never marry.”
38 “You may go,” he said. And he let her go for two months. She and her friends went into the hills and wept because she would never marry. 39 After the two months, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had vowed. And she was a virgin.
From this comes the Israelite tradition 40 that each year the young women of Israel go out for four days to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.

慰め励ましてくださる神
3-4 私たちの神様は、なんとすばらしいお方でしょう。神様は主イエス・キリストの父であり、あらゆる慈愛の源です。そして、私たちが苦しみや困難にあえいでいる時、慰めと励ましを与えてくださるお方です。それは、苦しみの中にあって慰めと励ましを必要としている人々に、私たちも、神から受ける助けと慰めを与えることができるためです。 5 私たちがキリストのために苦しめば苦しむほど、より豊かにキリストから慰めと励ましが与えられることは確かです。 6-7 私たちが大きな苦しみに会うのも、あなたがたが神の慰めと救いを受けるためです。現に神様は、苦しんでいる私たちを慰めてくださいました。それは、あなたがたのためでもあるのです。つまり、あなたがたが私たちと同じような苦しい境遇に立たされた時、神の慰めがどれほどやさしさに満ちたものであるかを知ることができるのです。神様は必ず、苦しみに耐え抜く力を与えてくださいます。
8 愛する皆さん。私たちがアジヤで味わった苦しみについて、ぜひ知っていただきたいと思います。私たちは非常に激しい迫害を受け、打ちのめされて、もうこれ以上生き延びるのはむりかと思いました。 9 死を覚悟し、自分の無力さを痛いほど思い知らされました。しかし、それがよかったのです。というのは、そんな状態の中で、何もかも神にお任せしたからです。死者を復活させることさえできるお方なのですから。 10 やはり、神様は私たちを助け、恐ろしい死の危険から救い出してくださいました。これからも、何度でも、救い出してくださるに違いありません。 11 あなたがたも、祈りによって私たちを助けてください。それは、私たちの安全を願うその祈りに、神がはっきりと答えてくださるのを見て、あなたがたがもっと感謝と賛美をささげるようになるためです。
12 私たちは、どんな場合でも、自分の知恵に頼らず、助けてくださる主に信頼し、きよさと誠実さをもって行動してきました。特にあなたがたに対しては、そのようにふるまってきました。胸を張ってそう言うことができます。 13-14 私の手紙は、単刀直入に、しかも真心をこめて書いたものです。どちらにも取れるあいまいなことは、決して書いていません。それで、たとえ今は、私についてあまりよく知らないあなたがたでも、私を受け入れ、私を誇りとしてくださるよう望みます。もちろん今も、ある程度そうしてくれていますが、今以上に、主イエスがもう一度帰って来られる日に、私があなたがたを誇りにするくらいにです。
15-16 あなたがたの私に対する理解と信頼を確信したので、次のような計画を立てました。マケドニヤへ向かう途中、まずコリントであなたがたに会い、また帰りにも立ち寄るという計画です。そうすれば、あなたがたは二倍の祝福を受けることができ、私もあなたがたに送られてユダヤへ行けるからです。
訪問を遅らせたのはなぜか
17 では、なぜその計画を変更したのか、と尋ねられるかもしれません。その決心が、まだ固まっていなかったからでしょうか。それとも、私も世間の人のように、ほんとうは「いいえ」と言いたいのに、「はい」と言ったりしたのでしょうか。 18 絶対にそんなことはしません。私の「はい」は、ほんとうに「はい」なのです。
19 テモテとシルワノと私は、神の子キリスト・イエスについて語ってきました。この方は、本心は「いいえ」なのに「はい」と言われる方ではありません。いつも、ことばどおり実行なさいます。 20 また神の約束は、ことごとく実行され、完成されました。それで私たちは、この方がどんなに真実な方か、すべての人に知らせ、その御名をほめたたえるのです。 21 あなたがたや私を忠実なクリスチャンとし、また私たちを、キリストの福音を宣べ伝える使徒に任命してくださったのは、この神様です。 22 また、神のものとなった証拠の印を私たちに押し、私たちの心に御霊を遣わしてくださったのも神様です。御霊は、私たちが神のものであることの保証であり、また、神が下さる最初の贈り物です。
23 この神に証人となっていただいて、少しの偽りもない真実を述べましょう。私がまだあなたがたを訪問しないでいるのは、信仰に関してきびしくしかりつけて、悲しい思いをさせたくないからです。 24 コリントへ行く時には〔もっとも、すでにしっかりした信仰を持っているあなたがたのために、私はそう役に立てるわけではありませんが〕、あなたがたに喜んでもらえるようにと願っています。悲しみではなく、喜びをもたらしたいのです。

To the church of God(D) in Corinth,(E) together with all his holy people throughout Achaia:(F)
2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.(G)
Praise to the God of All Comfort
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,(H) the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us(I) in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 5 For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ,(J) so also our comfort abounds through Christ. 6 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation;(K) if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. 7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings,(L) so also you share in our comfort.
8 We do not want you to be uninformed,(M) brothers and sisters,[a] about the troubles we experienced(N) in the province of Asia.(O) We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. 9 Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God,(P) who raises the dead.(Q) 10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril,(R) and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope(S) that he will continue to deliver us, 11 as you help us by your prayers.(T) Then many will give thanks(U) on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.
Paul’s Change of Plans
12 Now this is our boast: Our conscience(V) testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, with integrity[b](W) and godly sincerity.(X) We have done so, relying not on worldly wisdom(Y) but on God’s grace. 13 For we do not write you anything you cannot read or understand. And I hope that, 14 as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord Jesus.(Z)
15 Because I was confident of this, I wanted to visit you(AA) first so that you might benefit twice.(AB) 16 I wanted to visit you on my way(AC) to Macedonia(AD) and to come back to you from Macedonia, and then to have you send me on my way(AE) to Judea.(AF) 17 Was I fickle when I intended to do this? Or do I make my plans in a worldly manner(AG) so that in the same breath I say both “Yes, yes” and “No, no”?
18 But as surely as God is faithful,(AH) our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.” 19 For the Son of God,(AI) Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me and Silas[c](AJ) and Timothy(AK)—was not “Yes” and “No,” but in him it has always(AL) been “Yes.” 20 For no matter how many promises(AM) God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen”(AN) is spoken by us to the glory of God.(AO) 21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm(AP) in Christ. He anointed(AQ) us, 22 set his seal(AR) of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.(AS)
23 I call God as my witness(AT)—and I stake my life on it—that it was in order to spare you(AU) that I did not return to Corinth. 24 Not that we lord it over(AV) your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.(AW)
