⁶ Then all the leading citizens of Shechem and Beth-millo called a meeting under the oak beside the pillar^[a] at Shechem and made Abimelech their king.

⁹ So David made the fortress his home, and he called it the City of David. He extended the city, starting at the supporting terraces^[a] and working inward.

²⁰ Joash’s officers plotted against him and assassinated him at Beth-millo on the road to Silla.

Jeroboam Makes Gold Calves

²⁵ Jeroboam then built up the city of Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and it became his capital. Later he went and built up the town of Peniel.^[a]

²⁰ When the people of Israel learned of Jeroboam’s return from Egypt, they called an assembly and made him king over all Israel. So only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to the family of David.

The Northern Tribes Revolt

12 Rehoboam went to Shechem, where all Israel had gathered to make him king.

²⁶ Joshua recorded these things in the Book of God’s Instructions. As a reminder of their agreement, he took a huge stone and rolled it beneath the terebinth tree beside the Tabernacle of the Lord.
