⁵⁷ and God also made all the wickedness of the people of Shechem fall back on their heads, and on them came the curse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal.^(A)

²⁰ but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and devour the lords of Shechem and Beth-millo, and let fire come out from the lords of Shechem and from Beth-millo and devour Abimelech.”

³⁴ In his days Hiel of Bethel built Jericho; he laid its foundation at the cost of Abiram his firstborn and set up its gates at the cost of his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Joshua son of Nun.^(A)

⁴⁵ Abimelech fought against the city all that day; he took the city and killed the people who were in it, and he razed the city and sowed it with salt.^(A)

²⁶ Joshua then pronounced this oath, saying,
