⁵ Then he went to his father’s house ^(A)at Ophrah and ^(B)killed his brothers, the seventy sons of Jerubbaal, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, because he hid himself.

Athaliah Reigns in Judah^(A)

11 When ^(B)Athaliah ^(C)the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was ^(D)dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal heirs. ² But ^[a]Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram, sister of ^(E)Ahaziah, took ^[b]Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the king’s sons who were being murdered; and they hid him and his nurse in the bedroom, from Athaliah, so that he was not killed.

⁴ Now when Jehoram ^[a]was established over the kingdom of his father, he strengthened himself and killed all his brothers with the sword, and also others of the princes of Israel.

²⁴ So Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it ^[a]The-Lord-Is-Peace. To this day it is still ^(A)in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

^20 (A)saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who ^(B)sought the young Child’s life are dead.”

Massacre of the Innocents

¹⁶ Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.

¹⁷ And when he came to Samaria, ^(A)he killed all who remained to Ahab in Samaria, till he had destroyed them, according to the word of the Lord ^(B)which He spoke to Elijah.

² “Please speak in the hearing of all the men of Shechem: ‘Which is better for you, that all ^(A)seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal reign over you, or that one reign over you?’ Remember that I am your own flesh and ^(B)bone.”

³⁰ Gideon had ^(A)seventy sons who were his own offspring, for he had many wives.
