⁵ He said to the men of Sukkoth,^(A) “Give my troops some bread; they are worn out,^(B) and I am still pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna,^(C) the kings of Midian.”

¹⁷ Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth,^(A) where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth.^[a]

⁶ They have told the church about your love. Please send them on their way^(A) in a manner that honors^(B) God. ⁷ It was for the sake of the Name^(C) that they went out, receiving no help from the pagans.^{(D) 8} We ought therefore to show hospitality to such people so that we may work together for the truth.

²⁸ brought bedding and bowls and articles of pottery. They also brought wheat and barley, flour and roasted grain, beans and lentils,^{[a] 29} honey and curds, sheep, and cheese from cows’ milk for David and his people to eat.^(A) For they said, “The people have become exhausted and hungry and thirsty in the wilderness.^(B)”

¹⁸ Abigail acted quickly. She took two hundred loaves of bread, two skins of wine, five dressed sheep, five seahs^[a] of roasted grain,^(A) a hundred cakes of raisins^(B) and two hundred cakes of pressed figs, and loaded them on donkeys.^(C)

⁴ For they did not come to meet you with bread and water^(A) on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam^(B) son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim^[a](C) to pronounce a curse on you.^(D)
