¹⁴ His friend responded, “This can be nothing other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash,^(A) the Israelite. God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands.”

⁹ and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear^(A) of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you.

¹⁰ “Have you not put a hedge^(A) around him and his household and everything he has?^(B) You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.^(C)

⁶ for the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound^(A) of chariots and horses and a great army, so that they said to one another, “Look, the king of Israel has hired^(B) the Hittite^(C) and Egyptian kings to attack us!” ⁷ So they got up and fled^(D) in the dusk and abandoned their tents and their horses and donkeys. They left the camp as it was and ran for their lives.

5 Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast^(A) heard how the Lord had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until they^[a] had crossed over, their hearts melted in fear^(B) and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites.

²⁴ They said to Joshua, “The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands;^(A) all the people are melting in fear^(B) because of us.”

¹⁰ Then Balak’s anger burned^(A) against Balaam. He struck his hands together^(B) and said to him, “I summoned you to curse my enemies,^(C) but you have blessed them^(D) these three times.^{(E) 11} Now leave at once and go home!^(F) I said I would reward you handsomely,^(G) but the Lord has kept you from being rewarded.”

¹² Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell the messengers you sent me,^{(H) 13} ‘Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the Lord^(I)—and I must say only what the Lord says’?^(J)

⁵ The Lord put a word in Balaam’s mouth^(A) and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word.”^(B)
