² and the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel. Because of the Midianites, the children of Israel made for themselves the dens, ^(A)the caves, and the strongholds which are in the mountains.

³⁸ of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, ^(A)in dens and caves of the earth.

⁶ When the men of Israel saw that they were in danger (for the people were distressed), then the people ^(A)hid in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in holes, and in pits.

¹⁵ And the ^(A)kings of the earth, the great men, ^[a]the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, ^(B)hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains,

¹¹ So both of them showed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines. And the Philistines said, “Look, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have ^(A)hidden.”

^47 (A)“Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joy and gladness of heart, ^(B)for the abundance of everything, ⁴⁸ therefore you shall serve your enemies, whom the Lord will send against you, in ^(C)hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in need of everything; and He ^(D)will put a yoke of iron on your neck until He has destroyed you.
