¹⁵ Then Abdon son of Hillel died and was buried at Pirathon in Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.^(A)

²⁷ When he arrived there, he blew a trumpet^(A) in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went down with him from the hills, with him leading them.

¹³ Getting the Ammonites^(A) and Amalekites^(B) to join him, Eglon came and attacked Israel, and they took possession of the City of Palms.^[a](C)

³⁹ The descendants of Makir^(A) son of Manasseh went to Gilead,^(B) captured it and drove out the Amorites^(C) who were there. ⁴⁰ So Moses gave Gilead to the Makirites,^(D) the descendants of Manasseh, and they settled there.

¹⁴ Then Deborah said to Barak, “Go! This is the day the Lord has given Sisera into your hands.^(A) Has not the Lord gone ahead^(B) of you?” So Barak went down Mount Tabor, with ten thousand men following him.

¹⁰ There Barak summoned^(A) Zebulun and Naphtali, and ten thousand men went up under his command. Deborah also went up with him.

⁵ She held court^(A) under the Palm of Deborah between Ramah^(B) and Bethel^(C) in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went up to her to have their disputes decided. ⁶ She sent for Barak son of Abinoam^(D) from Kedesh^(E) in Naphtali and said to him, “The Lord, the God of Israel, commands you: ‘Go, take with you ten thousand men of Naphtali^(F) and Zebulun^(G) and lead them up to Mount Tabor.^(H)

The Amalekites Defeated

⁸ The Amalekites^(A) came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.^{(B) 9} Moses said to Joshua,^(C) “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff^(D) of God in my hands.”

¹⁰ So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur^(E) went to the top of the hill. ¹¹ As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning,^(F) but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. ¹² When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset.^{(G) 13} So Joshua overcame the Amalekite^(H) army with the sword.

¹⁴ Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write^(I) this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out^(J) the name of Amalek^(K) from under heaven.”

¹⁵ Moses built an altar^(L) and called^(M) it The Lord is my Banner. ¹⁶ He said, “Because hands were lifted up against^[a] the throne of the Lord,^[b] the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites^(N) from generation to generation.”^(O)
