¹⁴ Then the people of Benjamin came together out of the cities to Gibeah to go out to battle against the people of Israel.

¹³ Jeroboam had sent ^(A)an ambush around to come upon them from behind. Thus his troops^[a] were in front of Judah, and the ambush was behind them.

^23 (A)But Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his territory. He gathered all his people together and went out against Israel to the wilderness and ^(B)came to Jahaz and fought against Israel.

²⁰ But he said, ^(A)“You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against them with a large army and with a strong force.
