³⁰ Then the Danites set up the idol for themselves. Jonathan son of Gershom son of Moses^[a] and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the time the land went into captivity.^(A)

¹⁰ So the Philistines fought; Israel was defeated, and they fled, everyone to his home. There was a very great slaughter, for there fell of Israel thirty thousand foot soldiers.^{(A) 11} The ark of God was captured, and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.^(B)

² The Philistines drew up in line against Israel, and when the battle was joined,^[a] Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men on the field of battle. ³ When the troops came to the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has the Lord put us to rout today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord here from Shiloh, so that he may come among us and save us from the power of our enemies.”^(A)

⁵ This man Micah had a shrine, and he made an ephod and teraphim and installed one of his sons, who became his priest.^(A)

³ Then he returned the eleven hundred pieces of silver to his mother, and his mother said, “I consecrate the silver to the Lord from my hand for my son, to make an idol of cast metal.”^(A)

The Birth of Samson

13 The Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord gave them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.^(A)

²² She bore a son, and he named him Gershom,^[a] for he said, “I have been an alien residing in a foreign land.”^(A)

²⁹ For I know that after my death you will surely act corruptly, turning aside from the way that I have commanded you. In time to come trouble will befall you, because you will do what is evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger through the work of your hands.”^(A)
