1 In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land, and a certain man of Bethlehem in Judah went to live in the country of Moab, he and his wife and two sons.^{(A) 2} The name of the man was Elimelech and the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon^[a] and Chilion;^[b] they were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah. They went into the country of Moab and remained there.^(B)

⁵ They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it has been written by the prophet:^(A)

19 In those days, when there was no king in Israel, a certain Levite residing in the remote parts of the hill country of Ephraim took to himself a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah.^{(A) 2} But his concubine became angry with^[a] him, and she went away from him to her father’s house at Bethlehem in Judah and was there some four months.
