²² “We are doomed^(A) to die!” he said to his wife. “We have seen^(B) God!”

²⁶ For what mortal has ever heard the voice of the living God speaking out of fire, as we have, and survived?^(A)

³⁰ So Jacob called the place Peniel,^[a] saying, “It is because I saw God face to face,^(A) and yet my life was spared.”

¹⁸ No one has ever seen God,^(A) but the one and only Son, who is himself God and^[a](B) is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

³⁷ And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.^(A) You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,^(B)

⁵ “Woe^(A) to me!” I cried. “I am ruined!^(B) For I am a man of unclean lips,^(C) and I live among a people of unclean lips,^(D) and my eyes have seen^(E) the King,^(F) the Lord Almighty.”^(G)

²⁰ But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see^(A) me and live.”

²² When Gideon realized^(A) that it was the angel of the Lord, he exclaimed, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!”^(B)

³⁸ to drive out before you nations greater and stronger than you and to bring you into their land to give it to you for your inheritance,^(A) as it is today.
