⁴ Then Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead and fought with Ephraim. And the men of Gilead struck Ephraim, because they said, ^(A)“You are fugitives of Ephraim, you Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim and Manasseh.”

¹⁰ And Nabal answered David's servants, ^(A)“Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? ^(B)There are many servants these days who are breaking away from their masters.

^4 (A)Hear, O our God, for we are despised. ^(B)Turn back their taunt on their own heads and give them up to be plundered in a land where they are captives.

¹⁰ And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, ^(A)“The Lord will be witness between us, if we do not do as you say.”

¹² “When we took possession of this land at that time, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites the territory beginning ^(A)at Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead with ^(B)its cities. ^13 (C)The rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, that is, ^(D)all the region of Argob, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh. (All that portion of Bashan is called the land of ^(E)Rephaim. ^14 (F)Jair the Manassite took all the region of Argob, that is, Bashan, as far as the border of ^(G)the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called the villages ^(H)after his own name, Havvoth-jair, as it is to this day.) ¹⁵ To Machir ^(I)I gave Gilead, ¹⁶ and to the Reubenites ^(J)and the Gadites I gave the territory from Gilead as far as the Valley of the Arnon, with the middle of the valley as a border, as far over as the river Jabbok, ^(K)the border of the Ammonites; ¹⁷ the Arabah also, with the Jordan as the border, from ^(L)Chinnereth as far as ^(M)the Sea of the Arabah, ^(N)the Salt Sea, under ^(O)the slopes of Pisgah on the east.

³⁹ And the sons of ^(A)Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and captured it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it. ⁴⁰ And Moses ^(B)gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he settled in it.
