⁷ Jephthah said to them, “Didn’t you hate me and drive me from my father’s house?^(A) Why do you come to me now, when you’re in trouble?”

²⁷ Isaac asked them, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?^(A)”

⁹ “Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph,^(A) they sold him as a slave into Egypt.^(B) But God was with him^{(C) 10} and rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt. So Pharaoh made him ruler over Egypt and all his palace.^(D)

¹¹ “Then a famine struck all Egypt and Canaan, bringing great suffering, and our ancestors could not find food.^{(E) 12} When Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our forefathers on their first visit.^{(F) 13} On their second visit, Joseph told his brothers who he was,^(G) and Pharaoh learned about Joseph’s family.^{(H) 14} After this, Joseph sent for his father Jacob and his whole family,^(I) seventy-five in all.^(J)

⁴ Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come close to me.”^(A) When they had done so, he said, “I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt!^{(B) 5} And now, do not be distressed^(C) and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here,^(D) because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.^(E)

²⁷ Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother,^(A) our own flesh and blood.^(B)” His brothers agreed.
