Jephthah’s Vow

²⁹ Then the spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh. He passed on to Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed on to the Ammonites.^(A)

¹⁰ The spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel; he went out to war, and the Lord gave King Cushan-rishathaim of Aram into his hand, and his hand prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim.^(A)

²⁵ Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him and took some of the spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders, and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did not do so again.^(A)

³⁴ But the spirit of the Lord took possession of Gideon, and he sounded the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called out to follow him.^(A)

¹⁸ Then the spirit came upon Amasai, chief of the Thirty, and he said,^[a]

Then David received them and made them officers of his troops.^(A)

¹³ Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah.^(A)

David Plays the Lyre for Saul

¹⁴ Now the spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.^{(B) 15} And Saul’s servants said to him, “See now, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you.

¹⁰ When they were going from there to Gibeah,^[a] a band of prophets met him, and the spirit of God possessed him, and he fell into a prophetic frenzy along with them.^(A)

²⁵ The spirit of the Lord began to stir him in Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.^(A)

¹⁷ Then the Ammonites were called to arms, and they encamped in Gilead, and the Israelites came together, and they encamped at Mizpah.^(A)
