^12 (A)And they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. ^(B)They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and ^(C)bowed down to them. ^(D)And they provoked the Lord to anger.

^5 (A)You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am ^(B)a jealous God, ^(C)visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,

²⁵ Then people will say, ‘It is because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt,

⁵ But ^(A)that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has taught rebellion against the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you out of the house of slavery, to make you leave the way in which the Lord your God commanded you to walk. ^(B)So you shall purge the evil^[a] from your midst.

¹⁴ You shall not ^(A)go after other gods, ^(B)the gods of the peoples who are around you— ¹⁵ for ^(C)the Lord your God in your midst ^(D)is a jealous God—^(E)lest the anger of the Lord your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth.
