Biruinţa asupra madianiţilor
7 Ierubaal(A), sau Ghedeon, şi tot poporul care era cu el s-au sculat dis-de-dimineaţă şi au tăbărât la izvorul Harod. Tabăra lui Madian era la miazănoapte de Ghedeon, spre dealul More, în vale. 2 Domnul a zis lui Ghedeon: „Poporul pe care-l ai cu tine este prea mult pentru ca să dau pe Madian în mâinile lui; el ar putea să se laude(B) împotriva Mea şi să zică: ‘Mâna mea m-a izbăvit’. 3 Vesteşte dar lucrul acesta în auzul poporului: ‘Cine este(C) fricos şi se teme să se întoarcă şi să se depărteze de muntele Gaaladului’.” Douăzeci şi două de mii de oameni din popor s-au întors şi au mai rămas zece mii. 4 Domnul a zis lui Ghedeon: „Poporul este încă prea mult. Pogoară-i la apă şi acolo ţi-i voi alege; acela despre care îţi voi spune: ‘Acesta să meargă cu tine’ va merge cu tine, şi acela despre care îţi voi spune: ‘Acesta să nu meargă cu tine’ nu va merge cu tine”. 5 Ghedeon a pogorât poporul la apă, şi Domnul a zis lui Ghedeon: „Pe toţi cei ce vor lipăi apă cu limba, cum lipăie câinele, să-i desparţi de toţi cei ce vor bea apă din genunchi”. 6 Cei ce au lipăit apa, ducând-o la gură cu mâna, au fost în număr de trei sute de oameni, şi tot poporul celălalt a îngenuncheat ca să bea. 7 Şi Domnul a zis lui Ghedeon: „Cu(D) cei trei sute de oameni care au lipăit, vă voi mântui şi voi da pe Madian în mâinile tale. Toţi ceilalţi din popor să se ducă fiecare acasă.” 8 Au luat merindele poporului şi trâmbiţele lui. Apoi Ghedeon a trimis pe toţi bărbaţii lui Israel, pe fiecare în cortul lui, şi a ţinut pe cei trei sute de oameni. Tabăra lui Madian era jos, în vale. 9 Domnul a zis lui Ghedeon în timpul(E) nopţii: „Scoală-te şi pogoară-te în tabără, căci am dat-o în mâinile tale. 10 Dacă ţi-e frică să te pogori, pogoară-te cu Pura, slujitorul tău. 11 Să asculţi(F) ce vor zice şi după aceea ţi se vor întări mâinile: pogoară-te dar în tabără.” El s-a pogorât cu Pura, slujitorul lui, până la întâia strajă a taberei. 12 Madian, Amalec şi toţi fiii Răsăritului(G) erau răspândiţi în vale, ca o mulţime de lăcuste, şi cămilele lor erau fără număr, ca nisipul de pe marginea mării. 13 Ghedeon a sosit şi iată că un om istorisea tovarăşului său un vis. El zicea: „Am visat un vis şi se făcea că o turtă de orz se rostogolea în tabăra lui Madian; a venit de s-a lovit până la cort, şi cortul a căzut; l-a răsturnat cu susul în jos şi cortul a fost dărâmat.” 14 Tovarăşul lui a răspuns şi a zis: „Aceasta nu este altceva decât sabia lui Ghedeon, fiul lui Ioas, bărbatul lui Israel; Dumnezeu a dat în mâinile lui pe Madian şi toată tabăra.” 15 Când a auzit Ghedeon istorisirea visului şi tâlcuirea lui, s-a aruncat cu faţa la pământ, s-a întors în tabăra lui Israel şi a zis: „Sculaţi-vă, căci Domnul a dat în mâinile voastre tabăra lui Madian!” 16 A împărţit în trei cete pe cei trei sute de oameni şi le-a dat tuturor trâmbiţe şi urcioare goale, cu nişte făclii în urcioare. 17 El le-a zis: „Să vă uitaţi la mine şi să faceţi ca mine. Cum voi ajunge în tabără, să faceţi ce voi face eu 18 şi când voi suna din trâmbiţă, eu şi toţi cei ce vor fi cu mine, să sunaţi şi voi din trâmbiţă de jur împrejurul taberei şi să ziceţi: ‘Sabia Domnului şi a lui Ghedeon!’ ” 19 Ghedeon şi cei o sută de oameni care erau cu el au ajuns la capătul taberei la începutul străjii de la mijlocul nopţii, îndată după ce puseseră pe păzitori. Au sunat din trâmbiţă şi au spart urcioarele pe care le aveau în mână. 20 Cele trei cete au sunat din trâmbiţă şi au spart urcioarele; au apucat făcliile cu mâna stângă şi trâmbiţele cu mâna dreaptă, ca să sune, şi au strigat: „Sabia Domnului şi a lui Ghedeon!” 21 A rămas(H) fiecare la locul lui, în jurul taberei, şi toată(I) tabăra a început să alerge, să ţipe şi să fugă. 22 Cei trei sute de oameni au sunat(J) iarăşi din trâmbiţă şi, în toată tabăra, Domnul(K) i-a făcut să întoarcă sabia(L) unii împotriva altora. Tabăra a fugit până la Bet-Şita, spre Ţerera, până la hotarul de la Abel-Mehola, lângă Tabat. 23 Bărbaţii lui Israel s-au strâns, cei din Neftali, din Aşer şi din tot Manase, şi au urmărit pe Madian. 24 Ghedeon a trimis soli în tot muntele(M) lui Efraim ca să spună: „Pogorâţi-vă înaintea lui Madian şi tăiaţi-le trecerea apelor până la Bet-Bara şi Iordan.” Toţi bărbaţii lui Efraim s-au strâns şi au pus stăpânire pe trecerea(N) apelor până la Bet-Bara(O) şi Iordan. 25 Au pus mâna pe două(P) căpetenii ale lui Madian: Oreb şi Zeeb; au ucis pe Oreb la stânca(Q) lui Oreb şi au ucis pe Zeeb la teascul lui Zeeb. Au urmărit pe Madian şi au adus capetele lui Oreb şi Zeeb la Ghedeon, de cealaltă parte(R) a Iordanului.

Gideon Defeats the Midianites
7 Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal(A) (that is, Gideon(B)) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod.(C) The camp of Midian(D) was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh.(E) 2 The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength(F) has saved me.’ 3 Now announce to the army, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.(G)’” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained.
4 But the Lord said to Gideon, “There are still too many(H) men. Take them down to the water, and I will thin them out for you there. If I say, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go; but if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”
5 So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, “Separate those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink.” 6 Three hundred of them(I) drank from cupped hands, lapping like dogs. All the rest got down on their knees to drink.
7 The Lord said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands.(J) Let all the others go home.”(K) 8 So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites home but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others.
Now the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley. 9 During that night the Lord said to Gideon, “Get up, go down against the camp, because I am going to give it into your hands.(L) 10 If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah 11 and listen to what they are saying. Afterward, you will be encouraged to attack the camp.” So he and Purah his servant went down to the outposts of the camp. 12 The Midianites, the Amalekites(M) and all the other eastern peoples had settled in the valley, thick as locusts.(N) Their camels(O) could no more be counted than the sand on the seashore.(P)
13 Gideon arrived just as a man was telling a friend his dream. “I had a dream,” he was saying. “A round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent with such force that the tent overturned and collapsed.”
14 His friend responded, “This can be nothing other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash,(Q) the Israelite. God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands.”
15 When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed down and worshiped.(R) He returned to the camp of Israel and called out, “Get up! The Lord has given the Midianite camp into your hands.”(S) 16 Dividing the three hundred men(T) into three companies,(U) he placed trumpets(V) and empty jars(W) in the hands of all of them, with torches(X) inside.
17 “Watch me,” he told them. “Follow my lead. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly as I do. 18 When I and all who are with me blow our trumpets,(Y) then from all around the camp blow yours and shout, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon.’”
19 Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after they had changed the guard. They blew their trumpets and broke the jars(Z) that were in their hands. 20 The three companies blew the trumpets and smashed the jars. Grasping the torches(AA) in their left hands and holding in their right hands the trumpets they were to blow, they shouted, “A sword(AB) for the Lord and for Gideon!” 21 While each man held his position around the camp, all the Midianites ran, crying out as they fled.(AC)
22 When the three hundred trumpets sounded,(AD) the Lord caused the men throughout the camp to turn on each other(AE) with their swords.(AF) The army fled to Beth Shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of Abel Meholah(AG) near Tabbath. 23 Israelites from Naphtali, Asher(AH) and all Manasseh were called out,(AI) and they pursued the Midianites.(AJ) 24 Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan(AK) ahead of them as far as Beth Barah.”
So all the men of Ephraim were called out and they seized the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth Barah. 25 They also captured two of the Midianite leaders, Oreb and Zeeb(AL). They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb,(AM) and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued the Midianites(AN) and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, who was by the Jordan.(AO)

Gideon’s Valiant Three Hundred
7 Then (A)Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside the well of Harod, so that the camp of the Midianites was on the north side of them by the hill of Moreh in the valley.
2 And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel (B)claim glory for itself against Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ 3 Now therefore, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, (C)‘Whoever is fearful and afraid, let him turn and depart at once from Mount Gilead.’ ” And twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained.
4 But the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many; bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. Then it will be, that of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ the same shall go with you; and of whomever I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ the same shall not go.” 5 So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps from the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set apart by himself; likewise everyone who gets down on his knees to drink.” 6 And the number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people got down on their knees to drink water. 7 Then the Lord said to Gideon, (D)“By the three hundred men who lapped I will save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, every man to his [a]place.” 8 So the people took provisions and their trumpets in their hands. And he sent away all the rest of Israel, every man to his tent, and retained those three hundred men. Now the camp of Midian was below him in the valley.
9 It happened on the same (E)night that the Lord said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand. 10 But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant, 11 and you shall (F)hear what they say; and afterward [b]your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.” Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outpost of the armed men who were in the camp. 12 Now the Midianites and Amalekites, (G)all the people of the East, were lying in the valley (H)as numerous as locusts; and their camels were [c]without number, as the sand by the seashore in multitude.
13 And when Gideon had come, there was a man telling a dream to his companion. He said, “I have had a dream: To my surprise, a loaf of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian; it came to a tent and struck it so that it fell and overturned, and the tent collapsed.”
14 Then his companion answered and said, “This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel! Into his hand (I)God has delivered Midian and the whole camp.”
15 And so it was, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, that he worshiped. He returned to the camp of Israel, and said, “Arise, for the Lord has delivered the camp of Midian into your hand.” 16 Then he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet into every man’s hand, with empty pitchers, and torches inside the pitchers. 17 And he said to them, “Look at me and do likewise; watch, and when I come to the edge of the camp you shall do as I do: 18 When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then you also blow the trumpets on every side of the whole camp, and say, ‘The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!’ ”
19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outpost of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just as they had posted the watch; and they blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers that were in their hands. 20 Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers—they held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands for blowing—and they cried, “The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!” 21 And (J)every man stood in his place all around the camp; (K)and the whole army ran and cried out and fled. 22 When the three hundred (L)blew the trumpets, (M)the Lord set (N)every man’s sword against his companion throughout the whole camp; and the army fled to [d]Beth Acacia, toward Zererah, as far as the border of (O)Abel Meholah, by Tabbath.
23 And the men of Israel gathered together from (P)Naphtali, Asher, and all Manasseh, and pursued the Midianites.
24 Then Gideon sent messengers throughout all the (Q)mountains of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites, and seize from them the watering places as far as Beth Barah and the Jordan.” Then all the men of Ephraim gathered together and (R)seized the watering places as far as (S)Beth Barah and the Jordan. 25 And they captured (T)two princes of the Midianites, (U)Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued Midian and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the (V)other side of the Jordan.
