21 Israeliţii juraseră la Miţpa: „Nici unul din noi să nu-şi dea fata de soţie beniamiţilor!“ 2 După toate acestea, poporul s-a dus la Betel şi a rămas acolo, în prezenţa Domnului, până seara. Şi-au ridicat glasul, s-au jelit 3 şi au zis: „Doamne, Dumnezeul lui Israel, de ce s-a întâmplat aşa ceva în Israel? Să lipsească astăzi o seminţie întreagă din Israel?“
4 A doua zi poporul s-a sculat devreme, a zidit acolo un altar şi a adus arderi de tot şi jertfe de pace[a]. 5 Apoi israeliţii au zis: „Care dintre seminţiile lui Israel nu a venit la adunare, înaintea Domnului?“ Făcuseră un jurământ ferm ca oricine nu va veni înaintea Domnului la Miţpa, să fie pedepsit cu moartea.
6 Israeliţilor le părea rău de cei din poporul lor şi ziceau: „Astăzi a fost nimicită o seminţie din Israel! 7 Ce să facem pentru aceia care au rămas fără soţii, fiindcă am jurat pe Domnul că nu le vom da de soţii pe fetele noastre?“ 8 Apoi au zis: „Este vreuna dintre seminţiile lui Israel care nu a venit înaintea Domnului, la Miţpa?“ Li s-a spus că în tabără, la adunare, nu venise nici un bărbat din Iabeşul Ghiladului. 9 Au adunat poporul şi iată că acolo nu era nici un bărbat dintre locuitorii Iabeşului din Ghilad.
10 Atunci adunarea a trimis împotriva lor douăsprezece mii de războinici, poruncindu-le: „Duceţi-vă şi treceţi prin ascuţişul sabiei pe locuitorii din Iabeşul Ghiladului, cu tot cu femei şi copii! 11 Iată ce trebuie să faceţi: să nimiciţi toţi bărbaţii şi toate femeile care nu sunt fecioare!“ 12 Au găsit printre locuitorii din Iabeşul Ghiladului patru sute de fete fecioare şi le-au adus în tabără la Şilo, în ţara Canaan.
13 Toată adunarea a trimis soli ca să le vorbească beniamiţilor care se aflau la stânca Rimon şi să le vestească pacea. 14 În acea vreme, beniamiţii s-au întors şi li s-au dat de soţii dintre acelea care au fost lăsate în viaţă – dintre femeile din Iabeşul Ghiladului. Totuşi nu erau destule pentru ei. 15 Poporului îi părea rău de Beniamin, căci Domnul făcuse o ruptură în seminţiile lui Israel. 16 Atunci cei din sfatul bătrânilor adunării au zis: „Ce să facem cu cei care au rămas fără soţii, căci beniamitele au fost nimicite?“ 17 Au mai zis: „Supravieţuitorii lui Beniamin trebuie să aibă urmaşi, ca să nu fie ştearsă o seminţie din Israel! 18 Dar noi nu putem să le dăm de soţii pe fiicele noastre, căci toţi israeliţii au jurat spunând: «Blestemat este cel ce va da vreo femeie lui Beniamin!»“ 19 După aceea au zis: „În fiecare an este o sărbătoare a Domnului la Şilo, la nord de Betel, în partea de răsărit a drumului care duce de la Betel la Şehem şi la sud de Lebona!“ 20 Apoi le-au poruncit beniamiţilor şi le-au zis: „Duceţi-vă şi staţi la pândă în vii! 21 Urmăriţi ce se întâmplă şi când le veţi vedea pe fetele din Şilo că vor ieşi să danseze, să ieşiţi din vii şi să vă răpiţi fiecare câte o soţie dintre fetele din Şilo. Apoi să vă duceţi în teritoriul lui Beniamin. 22 Dacă părinţii sau fraţii lor vor veni să se plângă la noi, le vom spune: «Daţi-ni-le nouă, căci în luptă n-am reuşit să luăm pradă câte o femeie pentru fiecare om. Dacă ni le daţi acum, nu veţi fi vinovaţi de încălcarea jurământului!»“ 23 Beniamiţii au făcut întocmai: şi-au luat soţii după numărul lor dintre dansatoarele pe care le-au răpit. Apoi au plecat şi s-au întors la moştenirea lor; au zidit din nou cetăţi şi au locuit în ele. 24 Tot atunci, israeliţii au plecat de acolo, fiecare la seminţia şi la clanul lui. Şi astfel, fiecare om s-a dus la proprietatea lui.
25 În zilele acelea nu era rege în Israel şi fiecare făcea ce i se părea că este drept.

Wives for the Men of Benjamin
21 When the Israelites had met at Mizpah before the war with Benjamin,[a] they had made this sacred promise: “None of us will ever let our daughters marry any man from Benjamin.”
2 After the war with Benjamin, the Israelites went to the place of worship at Bethel and sat there until sunset. They cried loudly and bitterly 3 and prayed, “Our Lord, you are the God of Israel. Why did you let this happen? Now one of our tribes is almost gone.”
4 Early the next morning, the Israelites built an altar and offered sacrifices to please the Lord and to ask his blessing.[b] 5 Then they asked each other, “Did any of the tribes of Israel fail to come to the place of worship? We made a sacred promise that anyone who didn't come to the meeting at Mizpah would be put to death.”
6 The Israelites were sad about what had happened to the Benjamin tribe, and they said, “One of our tribes was almost wiped out. 7 Only a few men of Benjamin weren't killed in the war. We need to get wives for them, so the tribe won't completely disappear. But how can we do that, after promising in the Lord's name that we wouldn't let them marry any of our daughters?”
8-9 Again the Israelites asked, “Did any of the tribes stay away from the meeting at Mizpah?”
After asking around, they discovered that no one had come from Jabesh in Gilead. 10-11 So they sent 12,000 warriors with these orders: “Attack Jabesh in Gilead and kill everyone, except the women who have never been married.”
12 The warriors attacked Jabesh in Gilead, and returned to their camp at Shiloh in Canaan[c] with 400 young women.
13 The Israelites met and sent messengers to the men of Benjamin at Rimmon Rock, telling them that the Israelites were willing to make peace with them. 14 So the men of Benjamin came back from Rimmon Rock, and the Israelites let them marry the young women from Jabesh. But there weren't enough women.
15 The Israelites were very sad, because the Lord had almost wiped out one of their tribes. 16 Then their leaders said:
All the women of the Benjamin tribe were killed. How can we get wives for the men of Benjamin who are left? 17 If they don't have children, one of the Israelite tribes will die out. 18 But we can't let the men of Benjamin marry any of our daughters. We made a sacred promise not to do that, and if we break our promise, we will be under our own curse.
19 Then someone suggested, “What about the Lord's Festival that takes place each year in Shiloh? It's held north of Bethel, south of Lebonah, and just east of the road that goes from Bethel to Shechem.”
20 The leaders told the men of Benjamin who still did not have wives:
Go to Shiloh and hide in the vineyards near the festival. 21 Wait there for the young women of Shiloh to come out and perform their dances. Then rush out and grab one of the young women, then take her home as your wife. 22 If the fathers or brothers of these women complain about this, we'll say, “Be kind enough to let those men keep your daughter. After all, we couldn't get enough wives for all the men of Benjamin in the battle at Jabesh. And because you didn't give them permission to marry your daughters, you won't be under the curse we earlier agreed on.”[d]
23 The men of Benjamin went to Shiloh and hid in the vineyards. The young women soon started dancing, and each man grabbed one of them and carried her off. Then the men of Benjamin went back to their own land and rebuilt their towns and started living in them again.
24 Afterwards, the rest of the Israelites returned to their homes and families.
