⁵ Now I want ^(A)to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that ^(B)Jesus, who saved^[a] a people out of the land of Egypt, ^(C)afterward destroyed those who did not believe.

¹⁶ For ^(A)who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not ^(B)all those who left Egypt led by Moses? ¹⁷ And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, ^(C)whose bodies fell in the wilderness? ¹⁸ And to whom did he swear that ^(D)they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? ¹⁹ So we see that ^(E)they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

4 Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem ^(F)to have failed to reach it. ² For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because ^(G)they were not united by faith with those who listened.^[a]

^64 (A)But among these there was not one of those listed by Moses and Aaron the priest, who had listed the people of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. ⁶⁵ For the Lord had said of them, ^(B)“They shall die in the wilderness.” Not one of them was left, ^(C)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

Warning Against Idolatry

10 For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers,^[a] that our fathers were all under ^(A)the cloud, and all ^(B)passed through the sea, ² and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, ³ and ^(C)all ate the same ^(D)spiritual food, ⁴ and ^(E)all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. ⁵ Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for ^(F)they were overthrown^[b] in the wilderness.

⁶ Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as ^(G)they did. ^7 (H)Do not be idolaters ^(I)as some of them were; as it is written, ^(J)“The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” ^8 (K)We must not indulge in sexual immorality ^(L)as some of them did, and ^(M)twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. ⁹ We must not put Christ^[c] to the test, ^(N)as some of them did and ^(O)were destroyed by serpents, ¹⁰ nor grumble, ^(P)as some of them did and ^(Q)were destroyed by ^(R)the Destroyer. ¹¹ Now these things happened to them as an example, but ^(S)they were written down for our instruction, ^(T)on whom the end of the ages has come. ¹² Therefore ^(U)let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.

^22 (A)none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ^(B)ten times and have not obeyed my voice, ^23 (C)shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it. ²⁴ But my servant ^(D)Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has ^(E)followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it. ^25 (F)Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, ^(G)turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”

²⁶ And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, ²⁷ “How long shall ^(H)this wicked congregation grumble against me? ^(I)I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me. ²⁸ Say to them, ^(J)‘As I live, declares the Lord, ^(K)what you have said in my hearing I will do to you: ^29 (L)your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and ^(M)of all your number, listed in the census ^(N)from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me, ³⁰ not one shall come into the land where I ^(O)swore that I would make you dwell, ^(P)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. ^31 (Q)But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that ^(R)you have rejected. ³² But as for you, ^(S)your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. ³³ And your children ^(T)shall be shepherds in the wilderness ^(U)forty years and shall ^(V)suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness. ^34 (W)According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, ^(X)forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.’ ^35 (Y)I, the Lord, have spoken. Surely this will I do to all ^(Z)this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die.”

^36 (AA)And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing up a bad report about the land— ³⁷ the men who brought up a bad report of the land—^(AB)died by plague before the Lord.

¹⁵ For indeed the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from the camp, until they had perished.

The Day of the Lord Will Come

3 This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them ^(A)I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder,

¹² Therefore I intend ^(A)always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in ^(B)the truth that you have. ¹³ I think it right, as long as I am in this ^(C)body,^{[a] (D)}to stir you up by way of reminder,
