4 For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord [a]God and our Lord Jesus Christ.
Old and New Apostates
5 But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that (A)the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. 6 And the angels who did not keep their [b]proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; 7 as (B)Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the [c]vengeance of eternal fire.
8 (C)Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and (D)speak evil of [d]dignitaries. 9 Yet Michael the archangel, in [e]contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, (E)“The Lord rebuke you!” 10 (F)But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves. 11 Woe to them! For they have gone in the way (G)of Cain, (H)have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished (I)in the rebellion of Korah.
Apostates Depraved and Doomed
12 These are [f]spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried [g]about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots; 13 (J)raging waves of the sea, (K)foaming up their own shame; wandering stars (L)for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.
14 Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, 15 to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the (M)harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”
Apostates Predicted
16 These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they (N)mouth great swelling words, (O)flattering people to gain advantage. 17 (P)But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ: 18 how they told you that (Q)there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. 19 These are [h]sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.

4 For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about[a] long ago have secretly slipped in among you.(A) They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.(B)
5 Though you already know all this,(C) I want to remind you(D) that the Lord[b] at one time delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe.(E) 6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.(F) 7 In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah(G) and the surrounding towns(H) gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.(I)
8 In the very same way, on the strength of their dreams these ungodly people pollute their own bodies, reject authority and heap abuse on celestial beings.(J) 9 But even the archangel(K) Michael,(L) when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses,(M) did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”[c](N) 10 Yet these people slander whatever they do not understand, and the very things they do understand by instinct—as irrational animals do—will destroy them.(O)
11 Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain;(P) they have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error;(Q) they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion.(R)
12 These people are blemishes at your love feasts,(S) eating with you without the slightest qualm—shepherds who feed only themselves.(T) They are clouds without rain,(U) blown along by the wind;(V) autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted(W)—twice dead. 13 They are wild waves of the sea,(X) foaming up their shame;(Y) wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.(Z)
14 Enoch,(AA) the seventh from Adam, prophesied about them: “See, the Lord is coming(AB) with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones(AC) 15 to judge(AD) everyone, and to convict all of them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness, and of all the defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”[d](AE) 16 These people are grumblers(AF) and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires;(AG) they boast(AH) about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.
A Call to Persevere
17 But, dear friends, remember what the apostles(AI) of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold.(AJ) 18 They said to you, “In the last times(AK) there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.”(AL) 19 These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.(AM)
