Saludo

1 Judas(A), siervo de Jesucristo(B) y hermano de Jacobo[a], a los llamados(C), amados[b] en Dios Padre y guardados para Jesucristo(D): 2 Misericordia, paz y amor(E) les sean multiplicados(F).

Motivo de la carta

3 Amados(G), por el gran empeño que tenía en escribirles acerca de nuestra común salvación(H), he sentido la necesidad de escribirles exhortándolos a luchar ardientemente(I) por la fe(J) que de una vez para siempre fue entregada(K) a los santos(L). 4 Pues algunos hombres se han infiltrado encubiertamente(M), los cuales desde mucho antes estaban marcados[c](N) para esta condenación, impíos que convierten la gracia de nuestro Dios(O) en libertinaje(P), y niegan a nuestro único Soberano y Señor, Jesucristo(Q).

Advertencias de la historia para los impíos

5 Ahora quiero recordarles(R) a ustedes, aunque ya definitivamente[d] lo saben todo(S), que el Señor[e], habiendo salvado al[f] pueblo de la tierra de Egipto(T), destruyó después[g] a los que no creyeron. 6 Y a los ángeles que no conservaron su señorío original(U), sino que abandonaron su morada legítima, los ha guardado en prisiones[h] eternas(V) bajo tinieblas, para el juicio del gran día. 7 Así también Sodoma y Gomorra(W) y las ciudades circunvecinas(X), a semejanza de aquellos, puesto que ellas[i] se corrompieron[j] y siguieron carne extraña(Y), son exhibidas como ejemplo(Z) al sufrir el castigo del fuego eterno[k](AA). 8 No obstante, de la misma manera también estos hombres, soñando, contaminan su cuerpo, rechazan la autoridad, y blasfeman de las majestades angélicas[l](AB).

9 Pero cuando el arcángel(AC) Miguel(AD) luchaba contra el diablo y discutía acerca del cuerpo de Moisés(AE), no se atrevió a proferir juicio de maldición contra él, sino que dijo: «El Señor te reprenda(AF)». 10 Pero estos blasfeman las cosas que no entienden(AG), y las cosas que como animales irracionales(AH) conocen por instinto(AI), por estas cosas son ellos destruidos[m]. 11 ¡Ay de ellos! Porque han seguido el camino de Caín(AJ), y por ganar dinero se lanzaron al[n] error de Balaam(AK), y perecieron en la rebelión de Coré(AL). 12 Estos son escollos ocultos en los ágapes de ustedes[o](AM), cuando banquetean con ustedes sin temor(AN), apacentándose[p] a sí mismos. 20 Pero ustedes, amados(BI), edificándose(BJ) en su santísima fe, orando en el Espíritu Santo(BK), 21 consérvense en el amor de Dios, esperando ansiosamente la misericordia de nuestro Señor Jesucristo para vida eterna(BL). 22 Tengan misericordia de[w] algunos que dudan. 23 A otros, sálvenlos, arrebatándolos del fuego(BM); y de otros tengan misericordia con temor, aborreciendo aun la ropa contaminada por la carne[x](BN).

Bendición

24 Y a Aquel que es poderoso(BO) para guardarlos a ustedes sin caída[y] y para presentarlos sin mancha en presencia de Su gloria(BP) con gran alegría(BQ), 25 al único(BR) Dios nuestro Salvador(BS), por medio de Jesucristo nuestro Señor, sea gloria, majestad, dominio y autoridad(BT), antes de todo tiempo, y ahora y por todos los siglos(BU). 捍衛真道

3 親愛的弟兄姊妹，我一直迫切地想寫信跟你們談談我們所共享的救恩，但現在我覺得有必要寫信勸勉你們竭力護衛一次就完整地交給聖徒的真道。 4 因為有些不敬虔的人偷偷地混進你們中間，以上帝的恩典作藉口，放縱情慾，否認獨一的主宰——我們的主耶穌基督。聖經上早已記載，這樣的人必受到審判。

前車之鑑

5 以下的事情，你們雖然都知道，但我還要再提醒你們：從前上帝[a]把祂的子民從埃及救出來，後來把其中不信的人滅絕了。 6 至於不守本分、擅離崗位的天使，上帝也用鎖鏈將他們永遠囚禁在幽暗裡，等候最後審判的大日子到來。 7 此外，所多瑪、蛾摩拉及其附近城鎮的人同樣因為荒淫無度、沉溺於變態的情慾而遭到永火的刑罰。這些事都成為我們的警戒。

假教師的惡行

20 親愛的弟兄姊妹，你們要在至聖的真道上造就自己，在聖靈的引導下禱告， 21 常在上帝的愛中，等候我們主耶穌基督施憐憫賜給你們永生。

22 那些心存疑惑的人，你們要憐憫他們； 23 有些人，你們要將他們從火中搶救出來；還有些人，你們要懷著畏懼的心憐憫他們，甚至要厭惡被他們的邪情私慾玷污的衣服。

Greeting to the Called

1 Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, and (A)brother of James,

To those who are (B)called, [a]sanctified by God the Father, and (C)preserved in Jesus Christ:

2 Mercy, (D)peace, and love be multiplied to you.

Contend for the Faith

3 Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you (E)concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting (F)you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. 4 For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord [b]God and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Old and New Apostates

5 But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that (G)the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. 6 And the angels who did not keep their [c]proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; 7 as (H)Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the [d]vengeance of eternal fire.

8 (I)Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and (J)speak evil of [e]dignitaries. 9 Yet Michael the archangel, in [f]contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, (K)“The Lord rebuke you!” 10 (L)But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves. 11 Woe to them! For they have gone in the way (M)of Cain, (N)have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished (O)in the rebellion of Korah.

Apostates Depraved and Doomed

12 These are [g]spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried [h]about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots; 13 (P)raging waves of the sea, (Q)foaming up their own shame; wandering stars (R)for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.

14 Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, 15 to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the (S)harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”

Apostates Predicted

16 These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they (T)mouth great swelling words, (U)flattering people to gain advantage. 17 (V)But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ: 18 how they told you that (W)there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. 19 These are [i]sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.

Maintain Your Life with God

20 But you, beloved, (X)building yourselves up on your most holy faith, (Y)praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, (Z)looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

22 And on some have compassion, [j]making a distinction; 23 but (AA)others save [k]with fear, (AB)pulling them out of the [l]fire, hating even (AC)the garment defiled by the flesh.

Glory to God

24 (AD)Now to Him who is able to keep [m]you from stumbling,
And (AE)to present you faultless
Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,
25 To [n]God our Savior,
[o]Who alone is wise,
Be glory and majesty,
Dominion and [p]power,
Both now and forever.
Amen.

Address and Greeting. 1 [a]Jude, a slave of Jesus Christ and brother of James, to those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept safe for Jesus Christ:(A) 2 may mercy, peace, and love be yours in abundance.(B)

Occasion for Writing. 3 Beloved, although I was making every effort to write to you about our common salvation,[b] I now feel a need to write to encourage you to contend for the faith that was once for all handed down to the holy ones.(C) 4 For there have been some intruders, who long ago were designated for this condemnation, godless persons, who pervert the grace of our God into licentiousness and who deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.(D)

The False Teachers. 5 (E)I wish to remind you, although you know all things, that [the] Lord who once saved a people from the land of Egypt later destroyed those who did not believe.[c] 6 (F)The angels too, who did not keep to their own domain but deserted their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains, in gloom, for the judgment of the great day.[d] 7 Likewise, Sodom, Gomorrah, and the surrounding towns, which, in the same manner as they, indulged in sexual promiscuity and practiced unnatural vice,[e] serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.(G)

8 Similarly, these dreamers[f] nevertheless also defile the flesh, scorn lordship, and revile glorious beings. 9 Yet the archangel Michael, when he argued with the devil in a dispute over the body of Moses, did not venture to pronounce a reviling judgment[g] upon him but said, “May the Lord rebuke you!”(H) 10 But these people revile what they do not understand and are destroyed by what they know by nature like irrational animals.(I) 11 Woe to them!(J) They followed the way of Cain, abandoned themselves to Balaam’s error for the sake of gain, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.[h] 12 These are blemishes on your love feasts,[i] as they carouse fearlessly and look after themselves. They are waterless clouds blown about by winds, fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead and uprooted.(K) 13 They are like wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shameless deeds, wandering stars for whom the gloom of darkness has been reserved forever.

14 [j]Enoch, of the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied also about them when he said,(L) “Behold, the Lord has come with his countless holy ones 15 to execute judgment on all and to convict everyone for all the godless deeds that they committed and for all the harsh words godless sinners have uttered against him.” 16 These people are complainers, disgruntled ones who live by their desires; their mouths utter bombast as they fawn over people to gain advantage.(M)

Exhortations. 17 But you, beloved, remember the words spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ,(N) 18 for they told you,(O) “In [the] last time there will be scoffers who will live according to their own godless desires.”[k] 19 These are the ones who cause divisions; they live on the natural plane, devoid of the Spirit.(P) 20 But you, beloved, build yourselves up in your most holy faith; pray in the holy Spirit.(Q) 21 Keep yourselves in the love of God and wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.(R) 22 On those who waver, have mercy;[l] 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; on others have mercy with fear,[m] abhorring even the outer garment stained by the flesh.

Doxology.[n] 24 To the one who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you unblemished and exultant, in the presence of his glory,(S) 25 to the only God, our savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord be glory, majesty, power, and authority from ages past, now, and for ages to come. Amen.(T)

  1. 1 Jude…brother of James: for the identity of the author of this letter, see Introduction. To those who are called: the vocation to the Christian faith is God’s free gift to those whom he loves and whom he safely protects in Christ until the Lord’s second coming.
  2. 3–4 Our common salvation: the teachings of the Christian faith derived from the apostolic preaching and to be kept by the Christian community.
  3. 5 For this first example of divine punishment on those who had been saved but did not then keep faith, see Nm 14:28–29 and the note there. Some manuscripts have the word “once” (hapax as at Jude 3) after “you know”; some commentators have suggested that it means “knowing one thing” or “you know all things once for all.” Instead of “[the] Lord” manuscripts vary, having “Jesus,” “God,” or no subject stated.
  4. 6 This second example draws on Gn 6:1–4 as elaborated in the apocryphal Book of Enoch (cf. Jude 14): heavenly beings came to earth and had sexual intercourse with women. God punished them by casting them out of heaven into darkness and bondage.
  5. 7 Practiced unnatural vice: literally, “went after alien flesh.” This example derives from Gn 19:1–25, especially 4–11, when the townsmen of Sodom violated both hospitality and morality by demanding that Lot’s two visitors (really messengers of Yahweh) be handed over to them so that they could abuse them sexually. Unnatural vice: this refers to the desire for intimacies by human beings with angels (the reverse of the example in Jude 6). Sodom (whence “sodomy”) and Gomorrah became proverbial as object lessons for God’s punishment on sin (Is 1:9; Jer 50:40; Am 4:11; Mt 10:15; 2 Pt 2:6).
  6. 8 Dreamers: the writer returns to the false teachers of Jude 4, applying charges from the three examples in Jude 5, 6, 7. This may apply to claims they make for revelations they have received by night (to the author, hallucinations). Defile the flesh: this may mean bodily pollutions from the erotic dreams of sexual license (Jude 7). Lordship…glorious beings: these may reflect the Lord (Jude 5; Jesus, Jude 4) whom they spurn and the angels (Jude 6; cf. note on 2 Pt 2:10, here, as there, literally, “glories”).
  7. 9 The archangel Michael…judgment: a reference to an incident in the apocryphal Assumption of Moses. Dt 34:6 had said of Moses, literally in Greek, “they buried him” or “he (God?) buried him” (taken to mean “he was buried”). The later account tells how Michael, who was sent to bury him, was challenged by the devil’s interest in the body. Our author draws out the point that if an archangel refrained from reviling even the devil, how wrong it is for mere human beings to revile glorious beings (angels).
  8. 11 Cain…Balaam…Korah: examples of rebellious men and of the punishment their conduct incurred; cf. Gn 4:8–16; Nm 16:1–35; 31:16. See note on 2 Pt 2:15.

The opponents engaged in scandalous conduct in connection with community gatherings called love feasts (agape meals), which were associated with eucharistic celebrations at certain stages of early Christian practice; cf. 1 Cor 11:18–34 and the note on 2 Pt 2:13.

  13. 23 With fear: some manuscripts connect the phrase “with fear” with the imperative “save” or with the participle “snatching.” Other manuscripts omit the phrase “on others have mercy,” so that only two groups are envisioned. Rescue of those led astray and caution in the endeavor are both enjoined. Outer garment stained by the flesh: the imagery may come from Zec 3:3–5, just as that of snatching…out of the fire comes from Zec 3:2; the very garments of the godless are to be abhorred because of their contagion.
  14. 24–25 With this liturgical statement about the power of God to keep the faithful from stumbling, and praise to him through Jesus Christ, the letter reaches its conclusion by returning to the themes with which it began (Jude 1–2).
