Jesús sana a un ciego de nacimiento
9 A su paso, Jesús vio a un hombre que era ciego de nacimiento. 2 Y sus discípulos preguntaron:
—Rabí, para que este hombre haya nacido ciego, ¿quién pecó, él o sus padres?
3 —No está así debido a sus pecados ni a los de sus padres —respondió Jesús—, sino que esto sucedió para que la obra de Dios se hiciera evidente en su vida. 4 Mientras sea de día, tenemos que llevar a cabo la obra del que me envió. Viene la noche cuando nadie puede trabajar. 5 Mientras esté yo en el mundo, luz soy del mundo.
6 Dicho esto, escupió en el suelo, hizo barro con la saliva y se lo untó en los ojos al ciego, 7 diciéndole:
—Ve y lávate en el estanque de Siloé (que significa “Enviado”).
El ciego fue y se lavó, entonces al volver ya veía.
8 Sus vecinos y los que lo habían visto pedir limosna decían: «¿No es este el que se sienta a mendigar?». 9 Unos aseguraban: «Sí, es él». Otros decían: «No es él, sino que se le parece». Pero él insistía: «Soy yo».
10 —¿Cómo entonces se te han abierto los ojos? —le preguntaron.
11 Y él respondió:
—Ese hombre que se llama Jesús hizo un poco de barro, me lo untó en los ojos y me dijo: “Ve y lávate en Siloé”. Así que fui, me lavé y entonces pude ver.
12 —¿Y dónde está ese hombre? —le preguntaron.
—No lo sé —respondió.
Las autoridades investigan la sanidad del ciego
13 Llevaron ante los fariseos al que había sido ciego. 14 Era sábado cuando Jesús hizo el barro y le abrió los ojos al ciego. 15 Por eso los fariseos, a su vez, le preguntaron cómo había recibido la vista.
—Me untó barro en los ojos, me lavé y ahora veo —respondió.
16 Algunos de los fariseos comentaban: «Ese hombre no viene de parte de Dios, porque no respeta el sábado». Otros objetaban: «¿Cómo puede un pecador hacer semejantes señales?». Y había desacuerdo entre ellos.
17 Por eso interrogaron de nuevo al ciego:
—¿Y qué opinas tú de él? Fue a ti a quien te abrió los ojos.
—Yo digo que es profeta —contestó.
18 Pero los judíos no creían que el hombre hubiera sido ciego y ahora viera. Entonces llamaron a sus padres 19 y les preguntaron:
—¿Es este su hijo, el que dicen ustedes que nació ciego? ¿Cómo es que ahora puede ver?
20 —Sabemos que este es nuestro hijo —contestaron los padres—, y sabemos también que nació ciego. 21 Lo que no sabemos es cómo ahora puede ver ni quién le abrió los ojos. Pregúntenselo a él, que ya es mayor de edad y puede responder por sí mismo.
22 Sus padres contestaron así por miedo a los judíos, pues ya estos habían convenido que se expulsara de la sinagoga a todo el que reconociera que Jesús era el Cristo. 23 Por eso dijeron sus padres: «Pregúntenselo a él, que ya es mayor de edad».
24 Por segunda vez llamaron los judíos al que había sido ciego y le dijeron:
—¡Da gloria a Dios! A nosotros nos consta que ese hombre es pecador.
25 —Si es pecador, no lo sé —respondió el hombre—. Lo único que sé es que yo era ciego y ahora veo.
26 Pero ellos le insistieron:
—¿Qué te hizo? ¿Cómo te abrió los ojos?
27 Él respondió:
—Ya les dije y no me hicieron caso. ¿Por qué quieren oírlo de nuevo? ¿Es que también ustedes quieren hacerse sus discípulos?
28 Entonces lo insultaron y dijeron:
—¡Discípulo de ese lo serás tú! ¡Nosotros somos discípulos de Moisés! 29 Y sabemos que a Moisés le habló Dios; pero de este no sabemos ni de dónde salió.
30 —¡Allí está lo sorprendente! —respondió el hombre—: que ustedes no sepan de dónde salió y que a mí me haya abierto los ojos. 31 Sabemos que Dios no escucha a los pecadores, pero sí a los piadosos y a quienes hacen su voluntad. 32 Jamás se ha sabido que alguien le haya abierto los ojos a uno que nació ciego. 33 Si este hombre no viniera de parte de Dios, no podría hacer nada.
34 Ellos replicaron:
—Tú, que naciste sumido en pecado, ¿vas a darnos lecciones?
Y lo expulsaron.
La ceguera espiritual
35 Jesús se enteró de que habían expulsado a aquel hombre y al encontrarlo le preguntó:
—¿Crees en el Hijo del hombre?[a]
36 Él respondió:
—¿Quién es, Señor? Dímelo, para que crea en él.
37 —Pues ya lo has visto —contestó Jesús—; es el que está hablando contigo.
38 —Creo, Señor —declaró el hombre.
Y postrado lo adoró.
39 Entonces Jesús dijo:
—Yo he venido a este mundo para hacer justicia, para que los ciegos vean y los que ven se queden ciegos.
40 Algunos fariseos que estaban con él, al oírlo hablar así, le preguntaron:
—¿Qué? ¿Acaso también nosotros somos ciegos?
41 Jesús les contestó:
—Si fueran ciegos, no serían culpables de pecado, pero como afirman que ven, su pecado permanece.

Jesús sana a un ciego de nacimiento
9 Cuando pasaba, Jesús vio a un hombre que era ciego de nacimiento.
2 Y sus discípulos le preguntaron:
―Maestro, ¿este hombre nació ciego por culpa de su pecado o por el pecado de sus padres?
3 Jesús les respondió:
―Ni por el pecado de él ni por el de sus padres, sino para que todos vean lo que Dios hace en la vida de él. 4 Mientras es de día, tenemos que cumplir con el trabajo del que me envió. Viene la noche cuando ya nadie pueda trabajar. 5 Mientras yo estoy en el mundo, soy la luz del mundo.
6 Al acabar de decir esto, escupió en el suelo, hizo lodo con la saliva, se lo untó al ciego en los ojos y le dijo:
7 ―Ve y lávate en el estanque de Siloé (que significa: Enviado).
El ciego fue y se lavó, y al regresar ya veía.
8 Sus vecinos y los que antes lo habían visto pedir limosna decían: «¿No es este el que se sienta a pedir limosna?».
9 Unos decían: «Sí, es él». Otros decían: «No, no es él, sólo se parece a él». Pero él decía: «Sí, yo soy».
10 Le preguntaron:

Él respondió:
―No lo sé.
Las autoridades investigan la sanidad del ciego
13 Al que había sido ciego lo llevaron ante los fariseos. 14 Era sábado cuando Jesús hizo el lodo y le abrió los ojos al ciego. 15 Por eso los fariseos le preguntaron cómo era que podía ver. Él les respondió: «Me untó lodo en los ojos, me lavé, y ahora puedo ver».
16 Algunos fariseos decían: «Ese hombre no viene de parte Dios, porque no respeta el sábado».
Pero otros decían: «¿Cómo puede un pecador hacer señales milagrosas como esta?».
Y no llegaban a ningún acuerdo entre ellos.
17 Por eso volvieron a preguntarle al que había sido ciego:
―Él fue quien te dio la vista; ¿qué opinas de él?
Él contestó:
―Yo digo que es un profeta.
18 Pero los judíos no creían que ese hombre hubiera sido ciego y que ahora pudiera ver. Así que llamaron a sus padres 19 y les preguntaron:
―¿Es este su hijo? ¿Es verdad que nació ciego? ¿Cómo es que ahora puede ver?
20 Los padres contestaron:
―Sabemos que es nuestro hijo y que nació ciego. 21 Pero no sabemos cómo ahora puede ver ni quién le dio la vista. Pregúntenselo a él, pues ya es mayor de edad y puede responder por sí mismo.
22-23 Sus padres contestaron así porque tenían miedo de los judíos, pues estos se habían puesto de acuerdo para expulsar de la sinagoga a todo el que reconociera que Jesús era el Cristo.
24 Los judíos llamaron una vez más al que había sido ciego, y le dijeron:
―Júralo por Dios. Nosotros sabemos que este hombre es pecador.
25 El hombre respondió:
―Yo no sé si es pecador. Lo único que sé es que yo era ciego y ahora veo.
26 Ellos volvieron a preguntarle:
―¿Qué te hizo? ¿Cómo te dio la vista?
27 Él les contestó:
―Ya se lo dije y no me hicieron caso. ¿Para qué quieren oírlo otra vez? ¿Acaso quieren hacerse sus discípulos?
28 Entonces ellos lo insultaron y le dijeron:
―Discípulo de ese hombre lo serás tú. Nosotros somos discípulos de Moisés. 29 Sabemos que Dios le habló a Moisés, pero de este no sabemos nada.
30 El hombre respondió:
―¡Qué extraño que ustedes no sepan nada de él y que a mí me haya dado la vista! 31 Sabemos que Dios no escucha a los pecadores, pero sí escucha a los que lo adoran y hacen su voluntad. 32 Nunca se ha sabido que alguien le haya dado la vista a alguien que hubiera nacido ciego. 33 Si este hombre no viniera de parte de Dios, no podría hacer nada.
34 Ellos le respondieron:
―Tú, que desde que naciste eres un pecador, ¿vas a darnos lecciones a nosotros?
Y lo echaron de allí.
La ceguera espiritual
35 Jesús se enteró de que habían expulsado a ese hombre, y al encontrarse con él le preguntó:
―¿Crees en el Hijo del hombre?
36 Él le dijo:
―¿Quién es, Señor? Dímelo, para que crea en él.
37 Jesús le contestó:
―Pues ya lo has visto; soy yo, que estoy hablando contigo.
38 El hombre le dijo:
―Creo, Señor.
Se puso de rodillas delante de Jesús, y lo adoró.
39 Entonces Jesús dijo:
―Yo he venido a este mundo para juzgarlo. Para que los ciegos vean, y para que se queden ciegos los que ven.
40 Algunos fariseos que estaban con él, al oír que decía esto, le preguntaron:
―¿Quieres decir que nosotros somos ciegos?
41 Jesús les contestó:
―Si ustedes fueran ciegos, no serían culpables de sus pecados. Pero como aseguran que ven, son culpables de pecado.

Jesus helbreder en mann som var født blind
9 Mens Jesus gikk langs veien, fikk han se en mann som var født blind.
2 Disiplene spurte: ”Mester, hvorfor ble denne mannen født blind? Kommer det av at han selv har syndet, eller av at hans foreldre har syndet?”
3 Jesus svarte dem: ”Han er slett ikke straffet på grunn av syndene sine. Men etter som han er født blind, kan Gud helbrede ham og vise sin kraft, 4 Derfor må vi skynde oss å gjøre det oppdraget vi har fått fra han som har sendt meg. Snart blir det natt, og da kan ingen arbeide. 5 Men så lenge jeg er hos menneskene, er jeg lyset deres.”
6 Jesus spyttet på jorden og gjorde en deig av leire som han strøk på øynene til den blinde mannen. 7 Jesus sa til mannen: ”Gå og vask deg i Siloadammen”. Siloa betyr sendt ut. Han gikk da av sted og vasket seg. Da han kom tilbake, kunne han se.
8 Naboene hans og andre som bare hadde sett han som tigger, spurte hverandre: ”Var det ikke han som før satt og tigget?”
9 ”Jo, det er det”, sa noen, mens andre sa: ”Nei, det er ikke ham. Han er bare lik ham.”
Tiggeren sa: ”Visst er det jeg.”
10 Da spurte de ham: ”Hva har skjedd? Hvordan kan det ha seg at du ser?”
11 Mannen svarte: ”Han som heter Jesus, gjorde en deig av leire og strøk den på øynene mine. Etterpå sa han at jeg skulle gå til Siloadammen og vaske meg. Da jeg hadde gjort det, kunne jeg se!”
12 De spurte ham: ”Hvor er Jesus nå?”
”Det vet jeg ikke,” svarte mannen.
Fariseerne vil kryssforhøre mannen
13 Da tok folket med seg mannen som hadde vært blind, til fariseerne[a]. 14 Etter som det var på en hviledag[b] Jesus hadde laget deigen og gitt mannen synet, vakte det diskusjon. Da fariseerne spurte hvordan det kunne ha seg at han hadde fått synet, 15 fortalte han historien enn gang til: ”Han strøk en deig av leire på øynene mine, og da jeg vasket meg, kunne jeg se.”
16 Noen av fariseerne sa: ”Denne mannen kan ikke være sendt av Gud etter som han arbeider på hviledagen.” Andre sa: ”En synder kan vel ikke gjøre slike mirakler?” Så begynte de å diskutere med hverandre.
17 Etter en tid vendte fariseerne seg til mannen som hadde vært blind, og spurte: ”Hva sier du selv om ham? Det var jo du som fikk synet ditt.” Mannen svarte: ”Han må være en profet[c].”
18 Mange religiøse ledere tvilte på at mannen som var blitt helbredet, hadde vært blind i det hele tatt. De sendte bud på foreldrene hans 19 og spurte: ”Er dette sønnen deres? Ble han født blind? Dersom det er sant, hvordan kan det da ha seg at han nå ser?”
20 Foreldrene svarte: ”Det er sønnen vår, og vi vet at han ble født blind. 21 Men hvordan han nå kan se, det vet vi ikke, og heller ikke vet vi hvem som har helbredet ham. Spør ham selv. Han er gammel nok til å svare på spørsmålene dere måtte ha.”
22-23 Dette sa de fordi de fryktet de religiøse lederne. De hadde allerede bestemt at den som bekjente Jesus som Messias, den lovede kongen, skulle bli ekskludert fra Den jødiske menigheten.
24 For andre gangen kalte fariseerne til seg mannen som hadde vært blind, og sa til ham: ”Lov innfor Gud at du sier oss sannheten.[d] Vi vet at denne Jesus er en synder.”
25 Han svarte: ”Om han er en synder eller ikke, det vet ikke jeg. Det eneste jeg vet er at jeg som før var blind nå kan se.”
26 De spurte ham enda en gang: ”Hva gjorde han med deg? Hvordan gikk han fram da du fikk synet ditt?”
27 Mannen svarte: ”Det har jeg jo allerede fortalt. Hvorfor hører dere ikke etter? Vil dere også bli disiplene hans etter som dere ønsker å høre historien en gang til?”
28 Da forbannet de ham og sa: ”Det er du som er disippelen hans. Vi er disiplene til Moses. 29 Vi vet at Gud har talt til Moses, men hvor i all verden denne fyren kommer fra, det vet ikke vi.”
30 ”Dette er underlig”, svarte mannen. ”Han ga meg synet mitt, og enda vet ikke dere hvor han kommer fra. 31 Men at Gud ikke hører på syndere, det vet vi. Han hører på dem som tilber ham og gjør hans vilje. 32 Aldri før har vi hørt snakk om noen som har helbredet en som var født blind. 33 Om denne mannen ikke var sendt av Gud, da ville han ikke kunne gjøre noe slikt.”
34 ”Du er en synder tvers igjennom!”, ropte de. ”I tillegg forsøker du å undervise oss.” Så ekskluderte de mannen fra menigheten.
Jesus snakker om åndelig blindhet
35 Jesus fikk snart høre at de hadde ekskludert mannen fra Den jødiske menigheten. Da han møtte mannen igjen, spurte han: ”Tror du på Menneskesønnen[e] som Gud skulle sende?”
36 Mannen svarte: ”Herre, si meg hvem han er, slik at jeg kan tro på ham.”
37 Jesus sa: ”Du har sett ham. Det er han som snakker med deg.”
38 Da falt mannen ned foran Jesus og sa: ”Jeg tror, Herre.”
39 Jesus sa: ”Jeg har kommet til verden for å avsløre syndene hos menneskene. De som innser at de er blinde, skal begynne å se, men de som mener om seg selv at de kan se, de skal bli avslørt som blinde.”
40 Noen fariseere[f] som sto der, spurte da: ”Mener du at vi skulle være blinde?”
41 Jesus svarte: ”Om dere var blinde, ville dere være uten synd. Men dere påstår nå at dere kan se, og derfor er og blir dere skyldige.”

- 9:13 Fariseerne var et religiøst parti blant jødene. De var svært nøye med å følge hele Moseloven og hadde for øvrig lagt til egne regler og forskrifter.
- 9:14 I grunnteksten: Sabbaten. Jødene sin hviledag er den sjuende dagen i deres uke, altså lørdagen. Den dagen utfører ikke jødene noe unødvendig arbeid. Hviledagen ble innstiftet av Gud allerede i Første Mosebok 2:3.
- 9:17 En profet bringer Guds budskap.
- 9:24 På gresk: Gi Gud æren. Dette var en ed de bannet for domstolen.
- 9:35 ”Menneskesønnen” er et hebraisk ord for å si ”av mennesker”. Det var en tittel på Messias, den lovede kongen, hentet fra Daniel 7:13-14.

9 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
7 And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.
8 The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?

15 Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.
16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.
17 They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.
18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.
19 And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?
20 His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:
21 But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.
22 These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.
23 Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.
24 Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.
25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
26 Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?
27 He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?
28 Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples.
29 We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.
30 The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.
31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
32 Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.
33 If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.
34 They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.
35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
36 He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?
37 And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.
38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.
39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
40 And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?
41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind
9 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi,(A) who sinned,(B) this man(C) or his parents,(D) that he was born blind?”
3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.(E) 4 As long as it is day,(F) we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”(G)
6 After saying this, he spit(H) on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. 7 “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam”(I) (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.(J)
8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?”(K) 9 Some claimed that he was.
Others said, “No, he only looks like him.”
But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”
10 “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
11 He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”(L)
12 “Where is this man?” they asked him.
“I don’t know,” he said.
The Pharisees Investigate the Healing
13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. 14 Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath.(M) 15 Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight.(N) “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”
16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.”(O)
But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?”(P) So they were divided.(Q)
17 Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.”
The man replied, “He is a prophet.”(R)
18 They(S) still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents. 19 “Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”
20 “We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind. 21 But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders,(T) who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out(U) of the synagogue.(V) 23 That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”(W)
24 A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God by telling the truth,”(X) they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”(Y)
25 He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
26 Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
27 He answered, “I have told you already(Z) and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?”
28 Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!(AA) 29 We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”(AB)
30 The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.(AC) 32 Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were not from God,(AD) he could do nothing.”
34 To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth;(AE) how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.(AF)
Spiritual Blindness
35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe(AG) in the Son of Man?”(AH)
36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”(AI)
37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”(AJ)
38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.(AK)
39 Jesus said,[a] “For judgment(AL) I have come into this world,(AM) so that the blind will see(AN) and those who see will become blind.”(AO)
40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”(AP)
41 Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.(AQ)
