Alimentación de los cinco mil
6 (A)Después de esto, Jesús se fue al otro lado del mar de Galilea(B), el de Tiberias(C). 2 Y le seguía una gran multitud, pues veían las señales[a](D) que realizaba en los enfermos. 3 Jesús subió al monte(E) y se sentó allí con sus discípulos. 4 Y estaba cerca la Pascua(F), la fiesta de los judíos. 5 Entonces Jesús, alzando los ojos y viendo que una gran multitud venía hacia Él, dijo* a Felipe(G): ¿Dónde compraremos pan para que coman estos? 6 Pero decía esto para probarlo(H), porque Él sabía lo que iba a hacer. 7 Felipe(I) le respondió: Doscientos denarios[b] de pan(J) no les bastarán para que cada uno reciba un pedazo[c]. 8 Uno de sus discípulos(K), Andrés, hermano de Simón Pedro(L), dijo* a Jesús[d]: 9 Aquí hay un muchacho que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos pescados(M); pero ¿qué es esto para tantos? 10 Jesús dijo: Haced que la gente se recueste. Y había mucha hierba(N) en aquel lugar. Así que los hombres se recostaron, en número de unos cinco mil(O). 11 Entonces Jesús tomó los panes, y habiendo dado gracias(P), los repartió a los que estaban recostados[e]; y lo mismo hizo con los pescados(Q), dándoles todo lo que querían. 12 Cuando se saciaron, dijo* a sus discípulos(R): Recoged los pedazos que sobran, para que no se pierda nada. 13 Los recogieron, pues, y llenaron doce cestas(S) con los pedazos de los cinco panes de cebada que sobraron a los que habían comido. 14 La gente entonces, al ver la señal[f] que Jesús había hecho, decía: Verdaderamente este es el Profeta(T) que había de venir[g] al mundo.
15 Por lo que Jesús, dándose cuenta de que iban a venir y llevárselo por la fuerza para hacerle rey(U), (V)se retiró otra vez al monte(W) Él solo.
Jesús anda sobre el mar
16 Al atardecer, sus discípulos(X) descendieron al mar, 17 y subiendo en una barca, se dirigían al otro lado del mar, hacia Capernaúm(Y). Ya había oscurecido, y Jesús todavía no había venido a ellos; 18 y el mar estaba agitado porque soplaba un fuerte viento. 19 Cuando habían remado unos veinticinco o treinta estadios[h], vieron* a Jesús caminando sobre el mar y acercándose a la barca; y se asustaron. 20 Pero Él les dijo*: Soy yo; no temáis(Z). 21 Entonces ellos querían recibirle en la barca, e inmediatamente la barca llegó a la tierra adonde iban.
Jesús, el pan de la vida
22 Al día siguiente, la multitud(AA) que había quedado al otro lado del mar se dio cuenta de[i] que allí no había[j] más que una barca, y que Jesús no había entrado en ella[k] con sus discípulos, sino que sus discípulos se habían ido solos(AB). 23 Vinieron otras barcas de Tiberias(AC) cerca del lugar donde habían comido el pan después de que el Señor(AD) había dado gracias(AE). 24 Por tanto, cuando la gente vio que Jesús no estaba allí, ni tampoco sus discípulos, subieron a las barcas y se fueron a Capernaúm(AF) buscando a Jesús. 25 Cuando le hallaron al otro lado del mar, le dijeron: Rabí[l](AG), ¿cuándo llegaste acá? 26 Jesús les respondió y dijo: En verdad, en verdad os digo: me buscáis(AH), no porque hayáis visto señales[m](AI), sino porque habéis comido de los panes y os habéis saciado. 27 Trabajad, no por el alimento que perece, sino por el alimento que permanece(AJ) para vida eterna(AK), el cual el Hijo del Hombre(AL) os dará, porque a este es a quien el Padre, Dios, ha marcado con su sello(AM). 28 Entonces le dijeron: ¿Qué debemos hacer[n] para poner en práctica las obras de Dios? 29 Respondió Jesús y les dijo: Esta es la obra de Dios: que creáis(AN) en el que Él ha enviado(AO). 30 Le dijeron entonces: ¿Qué, pues, haces tú como señal[o](AP) para que veamos y te creamos? ¿Qué obra haces? 31 Nuestros padres comieron el maná en el desierto(AQ), como está escrito: «Les dio a comer pan del cielo(AR)». 32 Entonces Jesús les dijo: En verdad, en verdad os digo: no es Moisés el que os ha dado el pan del cielo, sino que es mi Padre el que os da el verdadero pan del cielo. 33 Porque el pan de Dios es el[p] que baja del cielo(AS), y da vida al mundo. 34 Entonces le dijeron: Señor, danos siempre este pan(AT). 35 Jesús les dijo: Yo soy el pan de la vida(AU); el que viene a mí no tendrá hambre, y el que cree en mí nunca tendrá sed(AV). 36 Pero ya os dije que aunque me habéis visto(AW), no creéis. 37 Todo lo que el Padre me da(AX), vendrá a mí; y al que viene a mí, de ningún modo lo echaré fuera. 38 Porque he descendido del cielo(AY), no para hacer mi voluntad, sino la voluntad del que me envió(AZ). 39 Y esta es la voluntad del que me envió: que de todo lo que Él me ha dado(BA) yo no pierda nada(BB), sino que lo resucite en el día final(BC). 40 Porque esta es la voluntad de mi Padre: que todo aquel que ve al Hijo(BD) y cree en Él, tenga vida eterna(BE), y yo mismo lo resucitaré en el día final(BF).
Murmuración de los judíos
41 Por eso los judíos(BG) murmuraban de Él, porque había dicho: Yo soy el pan que descendió del cielo(BH). 42 Y decían: ¿No es este Jesús, el hijo de José(BI), cuyo padre y madre nosotros conocemos(BJ)? ¿Cómo es que ahora dice: «Yo he descendido del cielo(BK)»? 43 Respondió Jesús y les dijo: No murmuréis entre vosotros. 44 Nadie puede venir a mí si no lo trae[q](BL) el Padre que me envió, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final(BM). 45 Escrito está en los profetas(BN): «Y todos serán enseñados por Dios(BO)». Todo el que ha oído y aprendido del Padre, viene a mí. 46 No es que alguien haya visto al Padre; sino aquel que viene[r] de Dios, este ha visto al Padre(BP). 47 En verdad, en verdad os digo: el que cree[s], tiene vida eterna(BQ). 48 Yo soy el pan de la vida(BR). 49 Vuestros padres comieron el maná en el desierto, y murieron(BS). 50 Este es el pan que desciende del cielo(BT), para que el que coma de él, no muera(BU). 51 Yo soy el pan vivo(BV) que descendió del cielo(BW); si alguno come de este pan, vivirá para siempre(BX); y el pan que yo también daré por la vida del mundo(BY) es mi carne(BZ).
52 Los judíos(CA) entonces contendían entre sí(CB), diciendo: ¿Cómo puede este darnos a comer su carne? 53 Entonces Jesús les dijo: En verdad, en verdad os digo: si no coméis la carne del Hijo del Hombre(CC) y bebéis su sangre, no tenéis vida en vosotros. 54 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, tiene vida eterna, y yo lo resucitaré en el día final(CD). 55 Porque mi carne es verdadera comida, y mi sangre es verdadera bebida. 56 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, permanece en mí y yo en él(CE). 57 Como el Padre que vive(CF) me envió(CG), y yo vivo por el Padre, asimismo el que me come, él también vivirá por mí. 58 Este es el pan que descendió del cielo(CH); no como el que vuestros[t] padres comieron, y murieron(CI); el que come este pan vivirá para siempre(CJ). 59 Esto dijo Jesús en la sinagoga, cuando enseñaba(CK) en Capernaúm(CL).
Reacción de los discípulos
60 Por eso muchos de sus discípulos(CM), cuando oyeron esto, dijeron: Dura es esta declaración(CN); ¿quién puede escucharla? 61 Pero Jesús, sabiendo(CO) en su interior que sus discípulos murmuraban por esto, les dijo: ¿Esto os escandaliza[u](CP)? 62 ¿Pues qué si vierais al Hijo del Hombre(CQ) ascender adonde antes estaba(CR)? 63 El Espíritu es el que da vida(CS); la carne para nada aprovecha; las palabras que yo os he hablado son espíritu y son vida(CT). 64 Pero hay algunos de vosotros que no creéis(CU). Porque Jesús sabía(CV) desde el principio quiénes eran los que no creían, y quién era el que le iba a traicionar[v](CW). 65 Y decía: Por eso os he dicho que nadie puede venir a mí si no se lo ha concedido(CX) el Padre(CY).
66 Como resultado de esto muchos de sus discípulos(CZ) se apartaron(DA) y ya no andaban con Él. 67 Entonces Jesús dijo a los doce(DB): ¿Acaso queréis vosotros iros también? 68 Simón Pedro(DC) le respondió: Señor, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna(DD). 69 Y nosotros hemos creído y conocido que tú eres el Santo de Dios(DE). 70 Jesús les respondió: ¿No os escogí(DF) yo a vosotros, los doce(DG), y sin embargo uno de vosotros es un diablo(DH)? 71 Y Él se refería a Judas, hijo de Simón Iscariote(DI), porque este, uno de los doce(DJ), le iba a entregar[w](DK).

Alimentación de los cinco mil

6 Después de esto, Jesús fue al otro lado del mar de Galilea, el de Tiberias. 2 Y le seguía gran multitud, porque veían las señales que hacía en los enfermos. 3 Entonces subió Jesús a un monte, y se sentó allí con sus discípulos. 4 Y estaba cerca la pascua, la fiesta de los judíos. 5 Cuando alzó Jesús los ojos, y vio que había venido a él gran multitud, dijo a Felipe: ¿De dónde compraremos pan para que coman estos? 6 Pero esto decía para probarle; porque él sabía lo que había de hacer. 7 Felipe le respondió: Doscientos denarios de pan no bastarían para que cada uno de ellos tomase un poco. 8 Uno de sus discípulos, Andrés, hermano de Simón Pedro, le dijo: 9 Aquí está un muchacho, que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos pececillos; mas ¿qué es esto para tantos? 10 Entonces Jesús dijo: Haced recostar la gente. Y había mucha hierba en aquel lugar; y se recostaron como en número de cinco mil varones. 11 Y tomó Jesús aquellos panes, y habiendo dado gracias, los repartió entre los discípulos, y los discípulos entre los que estaban recostados; asimismo de los peces, cuanto querían. 12 Y cuando se hubieron saciado, dijo a sus discípulos: Recoged los pedazos que sobraron, para que no se pierda nada. 13 Recogieron, pues, y llenaron doce cestas de pedazos, que de los cinco panes de cebada sobraron a los que habían comido. 14 Aquellos hombres entonces, viendo la señal que Jesús había hecho, dijeron: Este verdaderamente es el profeta que había de venir al mundo.
15 Pero entendiendo Jesús que iban a venir para apoderarse de él y hacerle rey, volvió a retirarse al monte él solo.
Jesús anda sobre el mar
(Mt. 14.22-27; Mr. 6.45-52)
16 Al anochecer, descendieron sus discípulos al mar, 17 y entrando en una barca, iban cruzando el mar hacia Capernaum. Estaba ya oscuro, y Jesús no había venido a ellos. 18 Y se levantaba el mar con un gran viento que soplaba. 19 Cuando habían remado como veinticinco o treinta estadios, vieron a Jesús que andaba sobre el mar y se acercaba a la barca; y tuvieron miedo. 20 Mas él les dijo: Yo soy; no temáis. 21 Ellos entonces con gusto le recibieron en la barca, la cual llegó en seguida a la tierra adonde iban.
La gente busca a Jesús
22 El día siguiente, la gente que estaba al otro lado del mar vio que no había habido allí más que una sola barca, y que Jesús no había entrado en ella con sus discípulos, sino que estos se habían ido solos. 23 Pero otras barcas habían arribado de Tiberias junto al lugar donde habían comido el pan después de haber dado gracias el Señor. 24 Cuando vio, pues, la gente que Jesús no estaba allí, ni sus discípulos, entraron en las barcas y fueron a Capernaum, buscando a Jesús.
Jesús, el pan de vida
25 Y hallándole al otro lado del mar, le dijeron: Rabí, ¿cuándo llegaste acá? 26 Respondió Jesús y les dijo: De cierto, de cierto os digo que me buscáis, no porque habéis visto las señales, sino porque comisteis el pan y os saciasteis. 27 Trabajad, no por la comida que perece, sino por la comida que a vida eterna permanece, la cual el Hijo del Hombre os dará; porque a este señaló Dios el Padre. 28 Entonces le dijeron: ¿Qué debemos hacer para poner en práctica las obras de Dios? 29 Respondió Jesús y les dijo: Esta es la obra de Dios, que creáis en el que él ha enviado. 30 Le dijeron entonces: ¿Qué señal, pues, haces tú, para que veamos, y te creamos? ¿Qué obra haces? 31 Nuestros padres comieron el maná en el desierto,(A) como está escrito: Pan del cielo les dio a comer.(B) 32 Y Jesús les dijo: De cierto, de cierto os digo: No os dio Moisés el pan del cielo, mas mi Padre os da el verdadero pan del cielo. 33 Porque el pan de Dios es aquel que descendió del cielo y da vida al mundo. 34 Le dijeron: Señor, danos siempre este pan.
35 Jesús les dijo: Yo soy el pan de vida; el que a mí viene, nunca tendrá hambre; y el que en mí cree, no tendrá sed jamás. 36 Mas os he dicho, que aunque me habéis visto, no creéis. 37 Todo lo que el Padre me da, vendrá a mí; y al que a mí viene, no le echo fuera. 38 Porque he descendido del cielo, no para hacer mi voluntad, sino la voluntad del que me envió. 39 Y esta es la voluntad del Padre, el que me envió: Que de todo lo que me diere, no pierda yo nada, sino que lo resucite en el día postrero. 40 Y esta es la voluntad del que me ha enviado: Que todo aquel que ve al Hijo, y cree en él, tenga vida eterna; y yo le resucitaré en el día postrero.
41 Murmuraban entonces de él los judíos, porque había dicho: Yo soy el pan que descendió del cielo. 42 Y decían: ¿No es este Jesús, el hijo de José, cuyo padre y madre nosotros conocemos? ¿Cómo, pues, dice este: Del cielo he descendido? 43 Jesús respondió y les dijo: No murmuréis entre vosotros. 44 Ninguno puede venir a mí, si el Padre que me envió no le trajere; y yo le resucitaré en el día postrero. 45 Escrito está en los profetas: Y serán todos enseñados por Dios.(C) Así que, todo aquel que oyó al Padre, y aprendió de él, viene a mí. 46 No que alguno haya visto al Padre, sino aquel que vino de Dios; este ha visto al Padre. 47 De cierto, de cierto os digo: El que cree en mí, tiene vida eterna. 48 Yo soy el pan de vida. 49 Vuestros padres comieron el maná en el desierto, y murieron. 50 Este es el pan que desciende del cielo, para que el que de él come, no muera. 51 Yo soy el pan vivo que descendió del cielo; si alguno comiere de este pan, vivirá para siempre; y el pan que yo daré es mi carne, la cual yo daré por la vida del mundo.
52 Entonces los judíos contendían entre sí, diciendo: ¿Cómo puede este darnos a comer su carne? 53 Jesús les dijo: De cierto, de cierto os digo: Si no coméis la carne del Hijo del Hombre, y bebéis su sangre, no tenéis vida en vosotros. 54 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, tiene vida eterna; y yo le resucitaré en el día postrero. 55 Porque mi carne es verdadera comida, y mi sangre es verdadera bebida. 56 El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, en mí permanece, y yo en él. 57 Como me envió el Padre viviente, y yo vivo por el Padre, asimismo el que me come, él también vivirá por mí. 58 Este es el pan que descendió del cielo; no como vuestros padres comieron el maná, y murieron; el que come de este pan, vivirá eternamente. 59 Estas cosas dijo en la sinagoga, enseñando en Capernaum.
Palabras de vida eterna
60 Al oírlas, muchos de sus discípulos dijeron: Dura es esta palabra; ¿quién la puede oír? 61 Sabiendo Jesús en sí mismo que sus discípulos murmuraban de esto, les dijo: ¿Esto os ofende? 62 ¿Pues qué, si viereis al Hijo del Hombre subir adonde estaba primero? 63 El espíritu es el que da vida; la carne para nada aprovecha; las palabras que yo os he hablado son espíritu y son vida. 64 Pero hay algunos de vosotros que no creen. Porque Jesús sabía desde el principio quiénes eran los que no creían, y quién le había de entregar. 65 Y dijo: Por eso os he dicho que ninguno puede venir a mí, si no le fuere dado del Padre.
66 Desde entonces muchos de sus discípulos volvieron atrás, y ya no andaban con él. 67 Dijo entonces Jesús a los doce: ¿Queréis acaso iros también vosotros? 68 Le respondió Simón Pedro: Señor, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna. 69 Y nosotros hemos creído y conocemos que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo del Dios viviente.(D) 70 Jesús les respondió: ¿No os he escogido yo a vosotros los doce, y uno de vosotros es diablo? 71 Hablaba de Judas Iscariote, hijo de Simón; porque este era el que le iba a entregar, y era uno de los doce.

Jesús da de comer a una multitud(A)
6 Después de esto, Jesús se fue al otro lado del Lago de Galilea, que es el mismo Lago de Tiberias. 2 Mucha gente lo seguía, porque habían visto las señales milagrosas que hacía sanando a los enfermos. 3 Entonces Jesús subió a un monte, y se sentó con sus discípulos. 4 Ya estaba cerca la Pascua, la fiesta de los judíos. 5 Cuando Jesús miró y vio la mucha gente que lo seguía, le dijo a Felipe:
—¿Dónde vamos a comprar pan para toda esta gente?
6 Pero lo dijo por ver qué contestaría Felipe, porque Jesús mismo sabía bien lo que había de hacer. 7 Felipe le respondió:
—Ni siquiera el salario de doscientos días bastaría para comprar el pan suficiente para que cada uno recibiera un poco.
8 Entonces Andrés, que era otro de sus discípulos y hermano de Simón Pedro, le dijo:
9 —Aquí hay un niño que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos pescados; pero, ¿qué es esto para tanta gente?
10 Jesús respondió:
—Díganles a todos que se sienten.
Había mucha hierba en aquel lugar, y se sentaron. Eran unos cinco mil hombres. 11 Jesús tomó en sus manos los panes y, después de dar gracias a Dios, los repartió entre los que estaban sentados. Hizo lo mismo con los pescados, dándoles todo lo que querían. 12 Cuando ya estuvieron satisfechos, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos:
—Recojan los pedazos sobrantes, para que no se desperdicie nada.
13 Ellos los recogieron, y llenaron doce canastas con los pedazos que sobraron de los cinco panes de cebada. 14 La gente, al ver esta señal milagrosa hecha por Jesús, decía:
—De veras éste es el profeta que había de venir al mundo.
15 Pero como Jesús se dio cuenta de que querían llevárselo a la fuerza para hacerlo rey, se retiró otra vez a lo alto del cerro, para estar solo.
Jesús camina sobre el agua(B)
16 Al llegar la noche, los discípulos de Jesús bajaron al lago, 17 subieron a una barca y comenzaron a cruzar el lago para llegar a Cafarnaúm. Ya estaba completamente oscuro, y Jesús no había regresado todavía. 18 En esto, el lago se alborotó a causa de un fuerte viento que se había levantado. 19 Cuando ya habían avanzado unos cinco o seis kilómetros, vieron a Jesús, que se acercaba a la barca caminando sobre el agua, y tuvieron miedo. 20 Él les dijo:
—¡Soy yo, no tengan miedo!
21 Con gusto lo recibieron en la barca, y en un momento llegaron a la tierra adonde iban.
La gente busca a Jesús
22 Al día siguiente, la gente que estaba al otro lado del lago se dio cuenta de que los discípulos se habían ido en la única barca que allí había, y que Jesús no iba con ellos. 23 Mientras tanto, otras barcas llegaron de la ciudad de Tiberias a un lugar cerca de donde habían comido el pan después que el Señor dio gracias. 24 Así que, al ver que ni Jesús ni sus discípulos estaban allí, la gente subió también a las barcas y se dirigió a Cafarnaúm, a buscarlo.
Jesús, el pan de la vida
25 Al llegar ellos al otro lado del lago, encontraron a Jesús y le preguntaron:
—Maestro, ¿cuándo viniste acá?
26 Jesús les dijo:
—Les aseguro que ustedes me buscan porque comieron hasta llenarse, y no porque hayan entendido las señales milagrosas. 27 No trabajen por la comida que se acaba, sino por la comida que permanece y que les da vida eterna. Ésta es la comida que les dará el Hijo del hombre, porque Dios, el Padre, ha puesto su sello en él.
28 Le preguntaron:
—¿Qué debemos hacer para realizar las obras que Dios quiere que hagamos?
29 Jesús les contestó:
—La única obra que Dios quiere es que crean en aquel que él ha enviado.
30 Le preguntaron entonces:
—¿Qué señal puedes darnos, para que al verla te creamos? ¿Cuáles son tus obras? 31 Nuestros antepasados comieron el maná en el desierto, como dice la Escritura: “Les dio a comer pan del cielo.”
32 Jesús les contestó:
—Les aseguro que no fue Moisés quien les dio a ustedes el pan del cielo, sino que mi Padre es quien les da el verdadero pan del cielo. 33 Porque el pan que Dios da es el que ha bajado del cielo y da vida al mundo.
34 Ellos le pidieron:
—Señor, danos siempre ese pan.
35 Y Jesús les dijo:
—Yo soy el pan que da vida. El que viene a mí, nunca tendrá hambre; y el que cree en mí, nunca tendrá sed. 36 Pero como ya les dije, ustedes no creen aunque me han visto. 37 Todos los que el Padre me da, vienen a mí; y a los que vienen a mí, no los echaré fuera. 38 Porque yo no he bajado del cielo para hacer mi propia voluntad, sino para hacer la voluntad de mi Padre, que me ha enviado. 39 Y la voluntad del que me ha enviado es que yo no pierda a ninguno de los que me ha dado, sino que los resucite en el día último. 40 Porque la voluntad de mi Padre es que todos los que miran al Hijo de Dios y creen en él, tengan vida eterna; y yo los resucitaré en el día último.
41 Por esto los judíos comenzaron a murmurar de Jesús, porque afirmó: «Yo soy el pan que ha bajado del cielo.» 42 Y dijeron:
—¿No es este Jesús, el hijo de José? Nosotros conocemos a su padre y a su madre. ¿Cómo dice ahora que ha bajado del cielo?
43 Jesús les dijo entonces:
—Dejen de murmurar. 44 Nadie puede venir a mí, si no lo trae el Padre, que me ha enviado; y yo lo resucitaré en el día último. 45 En los libros de los profetas se dice: “Dios instruirá a todos.” Así que todos los que escuchan al Padre y aprenden de él, vienen a mí.

6 After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee (that is, Tiberias). 2 And a large crowd was following him because they were observing the signs that he was doing on those who were sick. 3 So Jesus went up on the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. 4 (Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.) 5 Then Jesus, when he looked up[a] [b] and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread so that these people can eat?” 6 (Now he said this to test him, because he knew what he was going to do.) 7 Philip replied to him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for them, in order that each one could receive a little.” 8 One of his disciples, Andrew the brother of Simon Peter, said to him, 9 “Here is a boy who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these for so many people?” 10 Jesus said, “Make the people recline.” (Now there was a lot of grass in the place.) So the men reclined, approximately five thousand in number. 11 Then Jesus took the bread, and after he[c] had given thanks, he distributed it[d] to those who were reclining—likewise also of the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 And when they were satisfied, he said to his disciples, “Gather the remaining fragments so that nothing is lost.” 13 So they gathered them,[e] and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten.
14 Now when[f] the people saw the sign that he performed, they began to say,[g] “This one is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world!” 15 Then Jesus, because he[h] knew that they were about to come and seize him in order to make him[i] king, withdrew again up the mountain by himself alone.
Jesus Walks on the Water
16 Now when evening came, his disciples went down to the sea. 17 And getting into a boat, they began to go[j] to the other side of the sea, to Capernaum. And it had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 And the sea began to be stirred up[k] because[l] a strong wind was blowing. 19 Then when they[m] had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia,[n] they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were afraid. 20 But he said to them, “It is I! Do not be afraid!” 21 So they were wanting to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat came to the land to which they were going.
Discourse About the Bread of Life
22 On the next day, the crowd that was on the other side of the sea saw that other boats were not there (except one), and that Jesus had not entered with his disciples into the boat, but his disciples had departed alone. 23 Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after[o] the Lord had given thanks. 24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus.
25 And when they[p] found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” 26 Jesus replied to them and said, “Truly, truly I say to you, you seek me not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were satisfied! 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but the food that remains to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has set his seal on this one.”
28 So they said to him, “What shall we do that we can accomplish the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God: that you believe in the one whom that one sent.” 30 So they said to him, “Then what sign will you perform, so that we can see it[q] and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[r]
32 Then Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly I say to you, Moses did not give you bread from heaven, but my Father is giving you the true bread from heaven! 33 For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 So they said to him, “Sir, always give us this bread!”
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. The one who comes to me will never be hungry, and the one who believes in me will never be thirsty again. 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and do not believe. 37 Everyone whom the Father gives to me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will never throw out, 38 because I have come down from heaven not that I should do my will, but the will of the one who sent me. 39 Now this is the will of the one who sent me: that everyone whom he has given me, I would not lose any of them,[s] but raise them[t] up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks at the Son and believes in him would have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
41 Now the Jews began to grumble[u] about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven,” 42 and they were saying, “Is this one not Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered and said to them, “Do not grumble among yourselves![v] 44 No one is able to come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’[w] Everyone who hears from the Father and learns comes to me. 46 (Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God—this one has seen the Father.)[x] 47 Truly, truly I say to you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven so that someone may eat from it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats from this bread, he will live forever.[y] And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
52 So the Jews began to quarrel[z] among themselves,[aa] saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 Then Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life in yourselves! 54 The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 The one who eats[ab] my flesh and drinks my blood resides in me and I in him. 57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so also the one who eats[ac] me—that one will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not as the fathers ate and died. The one who eats[ad] this bread will live forever.”[ae]
Many of Jesus’ Disciples Offended by His Teaching
59 He said these things while[af] teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. 60 Thus many of his disciples, when they[ag] heard it,[ah] said, “This saying is hard! Who can understand it?” 61 But Jesus, because he[ai] knew within himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Does this cause you to be offended? 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man ascending where he was before? 63 The Spirit is the one who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, “Because of this I said to you that no one can come to me unless it has been granted to him by the Father.”

66 For this reason many of his disciples drew back[aj] and were not walking with him any longer. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “You do not want to go away also, do you?”[ak] 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 And we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus replied to them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is the devil?” 71 (Now he was speaking about Judas son of Simon Iscariot, because this one—one of the twelve—was going to betray him.)

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(A)
6 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs(B) he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside(C) and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival(D) was near.
5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip,(E) “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages[a] to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother,(F) spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”(G)
10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks,(H) and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
14 After the people saw the sign(I) Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”(J) 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king(K) by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.(L)
Jesus Walks on the Water(M)
16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles,[b] they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water;(N) and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”(O) 21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake(P) realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.(Q) 23 Then some boats from Tiberias(R) landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.(S) 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
Jesus the Bread of Life
25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi,(T) when did you get here?”
26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me,(U) not because you saw the signs(V) I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures(W) to eternal life,(X) which the Son of Man(Y) will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal(Z) of approval.”
28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe(AA) in the one he has sent.”(AB)
30 So they asked him, “What sign(AC) then will you give that we may see it and believe you?(AD) What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna(AE) in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[c]”(AF)
32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven(AG) and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”(AH)

Many Disciples Desert Jesus
60 On hearing it, many of his disciples(BQ) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”(BR)
61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?(BS) 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man(BT) ascend to where he was before!(BU) 63 The Spirit gives life;(BV) the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[e] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known(BW) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.(BX) 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”(BY)
66 From this time many of his disciples(BZ) turned back and no longer followed him.
67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.(CA)
68 Simon Peter answered him,(CB) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.(CC) 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”(CD)
