Jesús sana a un inválido
5 Algún tiempo después, se celebraba una fiesta de los judíos, y subió Jesús a Jerusalén. 2 Había allí, junto a la puerta de las Ovejas, un estanque rodeado de cinco pórticos, cuyo nombre en arameo es Betzatá.[a] 3 En esos pórticos se hallaban tendidos muchos enfermos, ciegos, cojos y paralíticos.[b] 5 Entre ellos se encontraba un hombre inválido que llevaba enfermo treinta y ocho años. 6 Cuando Jesús lo vio allí, tirado en el suelo, y se enteró de que ya llevaba mucho tiempo en esa condición, le preguntó:
―¿Quieres quedar sano?
7 ―Señor —respondió—, no tengo a nadie que me meta en el estanque mientras se agita el agua y, cuando trato de hacerlo, otro se mete antes.
8 ―Levántate, recoge tu camilla y anda —le contestó Jesús.
9 Al instante aquel hombre quedó sano, así que tomó su camilla y echó a andar. Pero ese día era sábado. 10 Por eso los judíos le dijeron al que había sido sanado:
―Hoy es sábado; no te está permitido cargar tu camilla.
11 ―El que me sanó me dijo: “Recoge tu camilla y anda” —les respondió.
12 ―¿Quién es ese hombre que te dijo: “Recógela y anda”? —le interpelaron.
13 El que había sido sanado no tenía idea de quién era, porque Jesús se había escabullido entre la mucha gente que había en el lugar.
14 Después de esto Jesús, lo encontró en el templo y le dijo:
―Mira, ya has quedado sano. No vuelvas a pecar, no sea que te ocurra algo peor.
15 El hombre se fue e informó a los judíos que Jesús era quien lo había sanado.
Vida mediante el Hijo
16 Precisamente por esto los judíos perseguían a Jesús, pues hacía tales cosas en sábado. 17 Pero Jesús les respondía:
―Mi Padre aún hoy está trabajando, y yo también trabajo.
18 Así que los judíos redoblaban sus esfuerzos para matarlo, pues no solo quebrantaba el sábado, sino que incluso llamaba a Dios su propio Padre, con lo que él mismo se hacía igual a Dios.
19 Entonces Jesús afirmó:
―Ciertamente os aseguro que el Hijo no puede hacer nada por su propia cuenta, sino solamente lo que ve que su Padre hace, porque cualquier cosa que hace el Padre, la hace también el Hijo. 20 Pues el Padre ama al Hijo y le muestra todo lo que hace. Sí, y aun cosas más grandes que estas le mostrará, de modo que os dejará asombrados. 21 Porque así como el Padre resucita a los muertos y les da vida, así también el Hijo da vida a quienes le place. 22 Además, el Padre no juzga a nadie, sino que todo juicio lo ha delegado en el Hijo, 23 para que todos honren al Hijo como lo honran a él. El que se niega a honrar al Hijo no honra al Padre que lo envió.
24 »Ciertamente os aseguro que el que oye mi palabra y cree al que me envió tiene vida eterna y no será juzgado, sino que ha pasado de la muerte a la vida. 25 Ciertamente os aseguro que ya viene la hora, y ha llegado ya, en que los muertos oirán la voz del Hijo de Dios, y los que la oigan vivirán. 26 Porque así como el Padre tiene vida en sí mismo, así también ha concedido al Hijo el tener vida en sí mismo, 27 y le ha dado autoridad para juzgar, puesto que es el Hijo del hombre.
28 »No os asombréis de esto, porque viene la hora en que todos los que están en los sepulcros oirán su voz 29 y saldrán de allí. Los que han hecho el bien resucitarán para tener vida, pero los que han practicado el mal resucitarán para ser juzgados. 30 Yo no puedo hacer nada por mi propia cuenta; juzgo solo según lo que oigo, y mi juicio es justo, pues no busco hacer mi propia voluntad, sino cumplir la voluntad del que me envió.
Los testimonios a favor del Hijo
31 »Si yo testifico en mi favor, ese testimonio no es válido. 32 Otro es el que testifica en mi favor, y me consta que es válido el testimonio que él da de mí.
33 »Vosotros enviasteis una delegación a preguntar a Juan, y él dio un testimonio válido. 34 Y no es que acepte yo el testimonio de un hombre; más bien lo menciono para que seáis salvos. 35 Juan era una lámpara encendida y brillante, y vosotros decidisteis disfrutar de su luz por algún tiempo.
36 »El testimonio con que yo cuento tiene más peso que el de Juan. Porque esa misma tarea que el Padre me ha encomendado que lleve a cabo, y que estoy haciendo, es la que testifica que el Padre me ha enviado. 37 Y el Padre mismo que me envió ha testificado en mi favor. Nunca habéis oído su voz, ni visto su figura, 38 ni vive su palabra en vosotros, porque no creéis en aquel a quien él envió. 39 Estudiáis[c] con diligencia las Escrituras porque pensáis hallar en ellas la vida eterna. ¡Y son ellas las que dan testimonio en mi favor! 40 Sin embargo, no queréis venir a mí para tener esa vida.
41 »La gloria humana no la acepto, 42 pero a vosotros os conozco, y sé que no amáis realmente a Dios.[d] 43 Yo he venido en nombre de mi Padre, y no me aceptáis; pero, si otro viniera por su propia cuenta, a ese sí lo aceptaríais. 44 ¿Cómo va a ser posible que creáis vosotros si buscáis la gloria los unos de los otros, pero no buscáis la gloria que viene del Dios único?[e]
45 »Pero no penséis que yo voy a acusaros delante del Padre. Quien os va a acusar es Moisés, en quien tenéis puesta vuestra esperanza. 46 Si creyerais a Moisés, me creeríais a mí, porque de mí escribió él. 47 Pero, si no creéis lo que él escribió, ¿cómo vais a creer mis palabras?»

5 Sau đó, nhằm một kỳ lễ của người Do Thái, Đức Giê-su lên Giê-ru-sa-lem. 2 Tại Giê-ru-sa-lem, gần bên Cửa Chiên, có một cái ao dưới vòm cung, tiếng Do Thái gọi là Bết-xa-tha. 3 Người đau yếu, mù lòa, què quặt và bại liệt nằm tại đây rất đông. 4 Họ chờ khi nước động, vì thỉnh thoảng một thiên sứ của Chúa giáng xuống ao, khuấy động mặt nước, người nào xuống ao đầu tiên khi nước dao động thì dù mắc bệnh gì cũng được lành.[a] 5 Ở đó có một người mắc bệnh đã ba mươi tám năm. 6 Đức Giê-su thấy người nằm liệt, biết người mang bệnh đã lâu nên hỏi: “Ngươi có muốn lành bệnh không?”
7 Người bệnh đáp: “Thưa ông, chẳng có ai quăng tôi xuống ao khi nước dao động. Khi tôi lần tới được thì người khác đã xuống trước tôi rồi!”
8 Đức Giê-su bảo: “Ngươi hãy đứng dậy, vác cáng của ngươi và bước đi!” 9 Lập tức, người ấy được lành, vác cáng mà đi.
Hôm ấy nhằm ngày Sa-bát.[b] 10 Vì thế, người Do Thái nói với người được chữa lành: “Hôm nay là ngày Sa-bát, ngươi không được phép vác cáng đi như vậy!”
11 Anh ta đáp: “Chính người đã chữa lành cho tôi bảo tôi: Hãy vác cáng của ngươi mà đi!”
12 Họ hỏi: “Ai là người dám bảo ngươi mang cáng đi?”
13 Người được lành bệnh không biết là ai vì Đức Giê-su đã lẩn vào đám đông đang tụ tập tại đó.
14 Sau đó, Đức Giê-su gặp người ấy tại đền thờ, Ngài bảo: “Này, ngươi đã lành rồi, đừng phạm tội nữa, e lại gặp điều càng tệ hơn chăng?” 15 Người ấy ra đi báo cho người Do Thái biết rằng chính Đức Giê-su là người đã chữa lành cho mình.
16 Thế là người Do Thái theo dõi bắt bớ Đức Giê-su, chỉ vì Ngài đã làm những việc ấy trong ngày Sa-bát. 17 Nhưng Đức Giê-su trả lời: “Cha Ta vẫn đang làm việc cho đến bây giờ và Ta cũng đang làm như vậy!” 18 Do đó, người Do Thái càng rắp tâm giết Đức Giê-su, vì không những Ngài đã phạm ngày Sa-bát mà còn gọi Đức Chúa Trời là Cha, tự cho mình bình đẳng với Đức Chúa Trời.
Thẩm Quyền Của Đức Chúa Con
19 Vì thế, Đức Giê-su đáp cùng họ rằng: “Thật vậy, Ta bảo các ngươi: Con chẳng tự mình làm bất cứ việc gì, trừ những việc Con đã thấy Cha làm, vì điều gì Cha làm thì Con cũng làm y như vậy! 20 Cha yêu quý Con nên bày tỏ cho Con tất cả những điều Cha làm và lại còn tỏ những việc vĩ đại hơn nữa, làm ngươi phải kinh ngạc. 21 Như Cha đã khiến kẻ chết sống lại và ban sự sống cho họ thế nào thì Con cũng sẽ ban sự sống cho người nào Con muốn thể ấy! 22 Thậm chí Cha chẳng xét xử ai cả nhưng đã trao cho Con trọn quyền xét xử để mọi người tôn kính Con cũng như họ đã tôn kính Cha. 23 Người nào chẳng tôn kính Con thì cũng không tôn kính Cha là Đấng đã sai Con đến.
24 Thật vậy, Ta bảo các ngươi, ai nghe theo lời Ta mà tin Đấng đã sai Ta sẽ được sự sống vĩnh phúc, và không bị kết án, nhưng vượt khỏi sự chết để vào sự sống.
25 Thật vậy, Ta bảo các ngươi: Giờ sắp điểm, mà thật ra đã điểm đây rồi, lúc những người chết sẽ được nghe tiếng của Con Đức Chúa Trời và những người nào nghe theo sẽ được sống. 26 Vì chính Cha có Sự Sống trong Ngài, nên Ngài cũng đã ban cho Con có Sự Sống trong mình. 27 Ngài đã ban cho Con quyền thi hành xét xử, vì Con chính là Con Người!
28 Ngươi đừng kinh ngạc về điều này, vì giờ sắp điểm, khi tất cả những người trong mộ phần sẽ nghe tiếng gọi của Ngài 29 và ra khỏi mộ. Ai làm lành sẽ sống lại để được sống, còn ai làm ác sẽ sống lại để bị xét xử.
30 Ta không thể tự mình làm việc gì. Ta xét xử chính xác theo điều Ta nghe và sự xét xử của Ta thật công minh vì Ta không tìm kiếm ý mình nhưng theo ý Đấng đã sai Ta.
Chứng Cớ Về Đức Giê-su
31 Nếu chính Ta làm chứng về mình thì lời chứng của Ta không xác thực. 32 Có một Đấng khác làm chứng về Ta và Ta biết lời chứng của Ngài về Ta là xác thực.
33 Chính các ngươi đã cử người đến cùng Giăng và người đã xác chứng sự thật. 34 Ta không dựa vào lời chứng của loài người, nhưng Ta nói lên những điều này để các ngươi được cứu rỗi. 35 Giăng là ngọn đèn đã cháy sáng mà chính các ngươi đã muốn vui trong ánh sáng của người một thời gian ngắn ngủi.
36 Nhưng chính Ta có một bằng chứng lớn lao hơn của Giăng, đó là các công tác Cha giao cho Ta hoàn tất. Chính các công tác Ta làm đó chứng thực về Ta rằng Cha đã sai Ta!
37 Chính Cha là Đấng sai Ta và làm chứng về Ta. Các ngươi chưa bao giờ nghe được tiếng của Ngài, cũng chưa bao giờ thấy được hình dạng Ngài. 38 Đạo Ngài các ngươi đã không giữ trong lòng, vì các ngươi không chịu tin theo Đấng mà Ngài sai đến. 39 Các ngươi tra cứu Kinh Thánh, vì các ngươi nghĩ rằng trong đó có sự sống vĩnh phúc. Kinh Thánh cũng làm chứng về Ta. 40 Thế mà các ngươi vẫn không chịu đến cùng Ta để được sự sống.
41 Ta chẳng cầu vinh nơi loài người, 42 nhưng Ta biết các ngươi chẳng có lòng yêu kính Đức Chúa Trời.
43 Chính Ta đã nhân danh Cha Ta mà đến nhưng các ngươi không tiếp nhận Ta; nếu có người nào khác lấy danh nghĩa riêng mà đến thì các ngươi lại đón tiếp! 44 Làm sao các ngươi tin được một khi các ngươi chỉ thích nhận vinh quang của nhau thay vì tìm kiếm vinh quang từ Đức Chúa Trời duy nhất?
45 Đừng tưởng rằng Ta sẽ tố cáo các ngươi trước mặt Cha; Môi-se, người mà các ngươi kỳ vọng, chính là người sẽ tố cáo các ngươi! 46 Nếu các ngươi thật sự tin lời Môi-se thì hẳn đã tin Ta, vì người viết về Ta! 47 Nhưng nếu những lời người ghi chép mà các ngươi còn không tin, thì làm sao các ngươi tin lời Ta nói đây?”

5 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.
3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.
4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.
11 He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
12 Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?
13 And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.
14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
15 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.
16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.
32 There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.
33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.
34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.
35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.
37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.
38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.
39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
41 I receive not honour from men.
42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.
43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?
45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.
46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me.
47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

The Healing at the Pool
5 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate(A) a pool, which in Aramaic(B) is called Bethesda[a] and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [4] [b] 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”
8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”(C) 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.
The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,(D) 10 and so the Jewish leaders(E) said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”(F)
11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ”
12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”
13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.
14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning(G) or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders(H) that it was Jesus who had made him well.
The Authority of the Son
16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father(I) is always at his work(J) to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him;(K) not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.(L)
19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself;(M) he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son(N) and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these,(O) so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,(P) even so the Son gives life(Q) to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,(R) 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.(S)
24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me(T) has eternal life(U) and will not be judged(V) but has crossed over from death to life.(W) 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come(X) when the dead will hear(Y) the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life(Z) in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge(AA) because he is the Son of Man.
28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming(AB) when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.(AC) 30 By myself I can do nothing;(AD) I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just,(AE) for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.(AF)
Testimonies About Jesus
31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.(AG) 32 There is another who testifies in my favor,(AH) and I know that his testimony about me is true.
33 “You have sent to John and he has testified(AI) to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human testimony;(AJ) but I mention it that you may be saved.(AK) 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light,(AL) and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.
36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John.(AM) For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing(AN)—testify that the Father has sent me.(AO) 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.(AP) You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,(AQ) 38 nor does his word dwell in you,(AR) for you do not believe(AS) the one he sent.(AT) 39 You study[c] the Scriptures(AU) diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life.(AV) These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,(AW) 40 yet you refuse to come to me(AX) to have life.
41 “I do not accept glory from human beings,(AY) 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God[d]?(AZ)
45 “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(BA) on whom your hopes are set.(BB) 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.(BC) 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”(BD)
