Jesús sana a un paralítico

5 Algún tiempo después, Jesús subió a Jerusalén, pues se celebraba una fiesta de los judíos. 2 Había allí, junto a la puerta de las Ovejas, un estanque rodeado de cinco entradas, cuyo nombre en hebreo es Betzatá.[a] 3 En esas entradas se hallaban tendidos muchos enfermos, ciegos, cojos y paralíticos. 4 [b] 5 Entre ellos se encontraba un hombre que llevaba enfermo treinta y ocho años. 6 Cuando Jesús lo vio tirado en el suelo y se enteró de que ya tenía mucho tiempo de estar así, le preguntó:

—¿Quieres quedar sano?

7 —Señor —respondió—, no tengo a nadie que me meta en el estanque mientras se agita el agua y, cuando trato de hacerlo, otro se mete antes.

8 —Levántate, recoge tu camilla y anda —le dijo Jesús.

9 Al instante aquel hombre quedó sano, así que tomó su camilla y echó a andar. Pero ese día era sábado. 10 Por eso los judíos dijeron al que había sido sanado:

—Hoy es sábado; no te está permitido cargar tu camilla.

11 —El que me sanó me dijo: “Recoge tu camilla y anda” —les respondió.

12 —¿Quién es ese hombre que te dijo: “Recógela y anda”? —le preguntaron.

13 El que había sido sanado no tenía idea de quién era, porque Jesús se había escabullido entre la mucha gente que había en el lugar.

14 Después de esto Jesús lo encontró en el Templo y le dijo:

—Mira, ya has quedado sano. No vuelvas a pecar, no sea que te ocurra algo peor.

15 El hombre se fue e informó a los judíos que Jesús era quien lo había sanado.

La autoridad del Hijo

16 Precisamente por esto los judíos perseguían a Jesús, pues hacía tales cosas en sábado. 17 Pero Jesús les respondía:

—Mi Padre aún hoy está trabajando y yo también trabajo.

18 Así que los judíos redoblaban sus esfuerzos para matarlo, pues no solo quebrantaba el sábado, sino que incluso decía que Dios era su propio Padre, con lo que él mismo se hacía igual a Dios.

19 Entonces Jesús afirmó:

—Les aseguro que el Hijo no puede hacer nada por su propia cuenta, sino solamente lo que ve que su Padre hace, porque cualquier cosa que hace el Padre, la hace también el Hijo. 20 Pues el Padre ama al Hijo y le muestra todo lo que hace. Sí, y aun cosas más grandes que estas le mostrará y los dejará a ustedes asombrados. 21 Porque así como el Padre resucita a los muertos y les da vida, así también el Hijo da vida a quienes a él le place. 22 Además, el Padre no juzga a nadie, sino que todo juicio lo ha delegado en el Hijo, 23 para que todos honren al Hijo como lo honran a él. El que se niega a honrar al Hijo no honra al Padre que lo envió.

24 »Les aseguro que el que oye mi palabra y cree al que me envió tiene vida eterna y no será juzgado, sino que ha pasado de la muerte a la vida. 25 Les aseguro que ya viene la hora, y ha llegado ya, en que los muertos oirán la voz del Hijo de Dios, y los que la oigan vivirán. 26 Porque así como el Padre tiene vida en sí mismo, así también ha concedido al Hijo el tener vida en sí mismo, 27 y le ha dado autoridad para juzgar, puesto que es el Hijo del hombre.

28 »No se asombren de esto, porque viene la hora en que todos los que están en los sepulcros oirán su voz 29 y saldrán de allí. Los que han hecho el bien resucitarán para tener vida, pero los que han practicado el mal resucitarán para ser juzgados. 30 Yo no puedo hacer nada por mi propia cuenta; juzgo solo según lo que oigo y mi juicio es justo, pues no busco hacer mi propia voluntad, sino cumplir la voluntad del que me envió.

Los testimonios a favor del Hijo

31 »Si yo testifico en mi favor, ese testimonio no es válido. 32 Otro es el que testifica en mi favor y me consta que es válido el testimonio que él da de mí.

33 »Ustedes enviaron a preguntarle a Juan y él dio un testimonio válido. 34 Y no es que yo acepte el testimonio de un hombre; más bien lo menciono para que ustedes sean salvos. 35 Juan era una lámpara encendida y brillante, y ustedes quisieron disfrutar de su luz por algún tiempo.

36 »El testimonio con que yo cuento tiene más peso que el de Juan. Porque las obras que el Padre me ha encomendado que lleve a cabo, y que estoy haciendo, son las que testifican que el Padre me ha enviado. 37 Y el Padre mismo que me envió ha testificado en mi favor. Ustedes nunca han oído su voz ni visto su figura, 38 ni vive su palabra en ustedes, porque no creen en aquel a quien él envió. 39 Ustedes estudian[c] con diligencia las Escrituras porque piensan que en ellas hallan la vida eterna. ¡Y son ellas las que dan testimonio en mi favor! 40 Sin embargo, ustedes no quieren venir a mí para tener esa vida.

41 »No acepto que la gente me dé gloria. 42 A ustedes los conozco y sé que no aman realmente a Dios.[d] 43 Yo he venido en nombre de mi Padre y ustedes no me aceptan; pero si otro viniera en su propio nombre, a ese sí lo aceptarían. 44 ¿Cómo va a ser posible que ustedes crean, si reciben gloria unos de otros, pero no buscan la gloria que viene del Dios único?[e]

45 »Pero no piensen que yo voy a acusarlos delante del Padre. Quien los va a acusar es Moisés, en quien tienen puesta su esperanza. 46 Si creyeran a Moisés, me creerían a mí, porque de mí escribió él. 47 Pero si no creen lo que él escribió, ¿cómo van a creer mis palabras?

5 Tiempo después, Jesús regresó a la ciudad de Jerusalén para asistir a una fiesta de los judíos. 2 En Jerusalén, cerca de la entrada llamada «Portón de las Ovejas», había una piscina con cinco entradas, que en hebreo se llamaba Betzatá.[a] 3-4 Allí, acostados en el suelo, había muchos enfermos: ciegos, cojos y paralíticos.[b] 5 Entre ellos había un hombre que desde hacía treinta y ocho años estaba enfermo. 6 Cuando Jesús lo vio allí acostado, y se enteró de cuánto tiempo había estado enfermo, le preguntó:

—¿Quieres que Dios te sane?

7 El enfermo contestó:

—Señor, no tengo a nadie que me meta en la piscina cuando el agua se mueve. Cada vez que trato de meterme, alguien lo hace primero.

8 Jesús le dijo:

—Levántate, alza tu camilla y camina.

9 En ese momento el hombre quedó sano, alzó su camilla y comenzó a caminar.

Esto sucedió un sábado, que es el día de descanso obligatorio para los judíos. 10 Por eso, unos jefes de los judíos le dijeron al hombre que había sido sanado:

—Hoy es sábado, y está prohibido que andes cargando tu camilla.

11 Pero él les contestó:

—El que me sanó me dijo: “Levántate, alza tu camilla y camina.”

12 Ellos preguntaron:

—¿Y quién te dijo que te levantaras y caminaras?

13 Pero el hombre no sabía quién lo había sanado, porque Jesús había desaparecido entre toda la gente que estaba allí.

14 Más tarde, Jesús encontró a ese hombre en el templo, y le dijo: «Ahora que estás sano, no vuelvas a pecar, porque te puede pasar algo peor.»

15 El hombre fue a ver a los jefes judíos, y les dijo que Jesús lo había sanado. 16 Entonces ellos empezaron a perseguir a Jesús por hacer milagros los sábados.

17 Pero Jesús les dijo: «Mi Padre nunca deja de trabajar, ni yo tampoco.»

18 Los jefes judíos se molestaron tanto que tuvieron aun más ganas de matar a Jesús. No lo querían porque, además de sanar a los enfermos en día sábado, decía que Dios era su Padre, y que por eso era igual a Dios.

La autoridad del Hijo de Dios

19 Jesús les dijo:

«Les aseguro que yo, el Hijo de Dios, no puedo hacer nada por mi propia cuenta. Sólo hago lo que veo que hace Dios, mi Padre. 20 Él me ama y me muestra todo lo que hace. Y me mostrará cosas aun más grandes, que a ustedes los dejarán asombrados. 21 Porque así como mi Padre hace que los muertos vuelvan a vivir, así también yo le doy vida a quien quiero. 22 Y mi Padre no juzga a nadie. Es a mí, que soy su Hijo, a quien le ha dado ese poder, 23 para que todos me honren como lo honran a él. Cuando alguien no me honra, tampoco honra a mi Padre, que me envió.

24 »Les aseguro que todo el que preste atención a lo que digo, y crea en Dios, que fue quien me envió, tendrá vida eterna. Aunque antes haya vivido alejado de Dios, ya no será condenado, pues habrá recibido la vida eterna. 25 Una cosa es cierta: ahora es cuando los que viven alejados de Dios me oirán a mí, que soy su Hijo. Si me obedecen, tendrán la vida eterna. 26 Porque Dios, mi Padre, tiene el poder para dar la vida, y a mí me ha dado ese poder. 27 También me ha dado autoridad para juzgar, pues yo soy el Hijo del hombre.

28 »No se sorprendan de lo que les digo, porque va a llegar el momento en que los muertos oirán mi voz 29 y saldrán de sus tumbas. Entonces, los que hicieron lo bueno volverán a vivir, y estarán con Dios para siempre; pero los que hicieron lo malo volverán a vivir para ser castigados.

Pruebas de la autoridad de Jesús

30 »Yo no puedo hacer nada por mi propia cuenta. Mi Padre me envió, y él me dice cómo debo juzgar a las personas. Por eso yo juzgo correctamente, porque no hago lo que yo quiero, sino lo que mi Padre me ordena hacer.

31 »Si yo hablara bien de mí mismo, ustedes dirían que miento. 32 Pero conozco a alguien que dirá quién soy yo, y que confirmará que yo digo la verdad. 33 Cuando ustedes enviaron mensajeros a Juan, él les dijo la verdad. 34-35 Las enseñanzas de Juan fueron como una lámpara encendida en la oscuridad, y por un tiempo ustedes se alegraron de escucharlas.

»Pero yo no necesito que nadie hable bien de mí. Si he mencionado a Juan, ha sido sólo para que ustedes crean y Dios los salve. 36 Yo puedo probarles que de verdad mi Padre me ha enviado. Así lo prueba todo lo que hago, y ni siquiera Juan puede ser mejor testigo. Porque yo hago las cosas que mi Padre me envió a hacer.

37 »Mi Padre me ha enviado, y él también habla bien de mí. Lo que pasa es que ustedes nunca lo han oído hablar, ni lo han visto cara a cara. 38 Ustedes no aceptan su mensaje, pues no han creído en mí, que he sido enviado por él.

39 »Ustedes estudian la Biblia con mucho cuidado porque creen que así alcanzarán la vida eterna. Sin embargo, a pesar de que la Biblia habla bien de mí, 40 ustedes no quieren creer en mí para alcanzar la vida eterna.

41 »A mí no me interesa que la gente hable bien de mí. 42 Además, a ustedes los conozco muy bien, y sé que no aman a Dios. 43 Él es mi Padre, y me ha enviado, pero ustedes no me han aceptado. Sin embargo, a quien viene por su propia cuenta, ustedes sí lo reciben. 44 ¡Cómo van a creerme, si les gusta que sea la gente la que hable bien de ustedes, y no el Dios único!

45 »No crean que yo voy a acusarlos con mi Padre. Ustedes han confiado en lo que Moisés escribió, y será Moisés quien los acuse. 46 Si le creyeran a Moisés, también creerían en mí, pues él escribió acerca de mí. 47 Pero si no creen en lo que él escribió, ¿cómo van a creer en lo que yo les digo?»

1 After (A)that, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went to Jerusalem.

2 [a]And there is at Jerusalem by the place of the sheep, a [b]pool called in Hebrew [c]Bethesda, having five porches:

3 In the which lay a great multitude of sick folk, of blind, halt, and withered, waiting for the moving of the water.

4 For an Angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first, after the stirring of the water, stepped in, was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

5 And a certain man was there, which had been diseased eight and thirty years.

6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he now long time had been diseased, he said unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?

7 The sick man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

8 Jesus said unto him, Rise: take up thy bed, and walk.

9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and the same day was the Sabbath.

10 [d]The Jews therefore said to him that was made whole, It is the Sabbath day: (B)it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.

11 He answered them, He that made me whole he said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.

16 And therefore the Jews did persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the Sabbath day.

18 (C)Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him: not only because he had broken the Sabbath: but said also that God was [f]his Father, and made himself equal with God.

19 Then answered Jesus, and said unto them, Verily, verily I say unto you, The Son can do nothing [g]of himself, save that he [h]seeth the Father do: for whatsoever things he doeth, the same things doeth the Son [i]in like manner.

20 For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth him all things, whatsoever he himself doeth, and he will show him greater works than these, that ye should marvel.

38 And his word have you not abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believed not.

40 But ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

41 I receive not the praise of men.

43 I am come in my Father’s Name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him will ye receive.

44 How can ye believe, which receive (K)honor one of another, and seek not the honor that cometh of God alone?

45 [ab]Do not think that I will accuse you to my Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.

46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he (L)wrote of me.

47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words.

The Healing at the Pool

5 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate(A) a pool, which in Aramaic(B) is called Bethesda[a] and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [4] [b] 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”

7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”(C) 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,(D) 10 and so the Jewish leaders(E) said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”(F)

11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ”

12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”

13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.

14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning(G) or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders(H) that it was Jesus who had made him well.

The Authority of the Son

16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father(I) is always at his work(J) to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him;(K) not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.(L)

19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself;(M) he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son(N) and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these,(O) so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,(P) even so the Son gives life(Q) to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,(R) 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.(S)

24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me(T) has eternal life(U) and will not be judged(V) but has crossed over from death to life.(W) 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come(X) when the dead will hear(Y) the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life(Z) in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge(AA) because he is the Son of Man.

28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming(AB) when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.(AC) 30 By myself I can do nothing;(AD) I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just,(AE) for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.(AF)

Testimonies About Jesus

31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.(AG) 32 There is another who testifies in my favor,(AH) and I know that his testimony about me is true.

33 “You have sent to John and he has testified(AI) to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human testimony;(AJ) but I mention it that you may be saved.(AK) 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light,(AL) and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.

36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John.(AM) For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing(AN)—testify that the Father has sent me.(AO) 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.(AP) You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,(AQ) 38 nor does his word dwell in you,(AR) for you do not believe(AS) the one he sent.(AT) 39 You study[c] the Scriptures(AU) diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life.(AV) These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,(AW) 40 yet you refuse to come to me(AX) to have life.

41 “I do not accept glory from human beings,(AY) 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God[d]?(AZ)

45 “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(BA) on whom your hopes are set.(BB) 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.(BC) 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”(BD)
