19 Kaya't ipinakuha ni Pilato si Jesus at ipinahagupit. 2 Ang mga kawal ay kumuha ng halamang matinik, ginawa itong korona at ipinutong kay Jesus. Siya rin ay sinuotan nila ng balabal na kulay ube. 3 Lumapit sila sa kanya at sinabi, “Mabuhay ang Hari ng mga Judio!” At kanilang pinagsasampal si Jesus.
4 Lumabas muli si Pilato at sinabi sa mga tao, “Ihaharap ko siya sa inyo upang malaman ninyo na wala akong nakikitang dahilan upang hatulan siya!” 5 At lumabas si Jesus na may koronang tinik at balabal na kulay ube. Sinabi sa kanila ni Pilato, “Pagmasdan ninyo ang taong ito!”
6 Pagkakita sa kanya ng mga punong pari at ng mga bantay, sila'y nagsigawan, “Ipako siya sa krus! Ipako sa krus!”
Sinabi ni Pilato, “Kayo ang bahala sa kanya at magpako sa kanya sa krus, dahil wala akong nakikitang dahilan upang hatulan siya.”
7 Sumagot ang mga Judio, “Mayroon kaming batas at ayon dito ay nararapat siyang mamatay, sapagkat sinasabi niyang siya'y Anak ng Diyos.”
8 Nang marinig ni Pilato ang sinabi nila, lalo siyang natakot. 9 Muli siyang pumasok sa palasyo at tinanong si Jesus, “Tagasaan ka ba?” Subalit hindi tumugon si Jesus. 10 Muling nagtanong si Pilato, “Ayaw mong magsalita sa akin? Hindi mo ba alam na may kapangyarihan akong palayain ka o ipapako sa krus?”
11 Sumagot(A) si Jesus, “Hindi ka magkakaroon ng kapangyarihan sa akin kung hindi iyan ibinigay sa iyo mula sa langit, kaya't mas mabigat ang kasalanan ng nagdala sa akin dito sa harapan mo.”
12 Nang marinig ito ni Pilato, naghanap siya ng paraan upang palayain si Jesus. Ngunit nagsigawan ang mga Judio, “Kapag pinalaya mo ang taong iyan, hindi ka kaibigan ng Emperador! Ang sinumang nagsasabing siya'y hari ay kalaban ng Emperador.”
13 Pagkarinig ni Pilato sa mga salitang ito, inilabas niya si Jesus at siya'y umupo sa upuan ng hukom na nasa dakong tinatawag na “Plataporma,” Gabatha sa wikang Hebreo.
14 Araw noon ng Paghahanda sa Paskwa, at mag-aalas-dose na ng tanghali. Sinabi ni Pilato sa mga Judio, “Narito ang inyong hari!”
15 Sumigaw sila, “Patayin siya! Patayin! Ipako sa krus!”
“Ipapako ko ba sa krus ang inyong hari?” tanong naman ni Pilato. Sumagot ang mga punong pari, “Wala kaming hari kundi ang Emperador!”
16 Kaya't ibinigay sa kanila ni Pilato si Jesus upang siya'y ipako sa krus.
Ipinako si Jesus sa Krus(B)
Kinuha nga nila si Jesus. 17 Inilabas siyang pasan ang kanyang krus papunta sa lugar na kung tawagi'y “Dako ng Bungo,” Golgotha sa wikang Hebreo. 18 Doon ay ipinako siya sa krus, kasama ng dalawa pa; isa sa gawing kanan at isa sa kaliwa. 19 Gumawa si Pilato ng isang karatula at inilagay sa krus; ganito ang nakasulat: “Si Jesus na taga-Nazaret, ang Hari ng mga Judio.” 20 Nakasulat ito sa mga wikang Hebreo, Latin, at Griego. Marami sa mga Judio ang nakabasa nito sapagkat malapit lamang sa lungsod ang dakong pinagpakuan kay Jesus. 21 Kaya't sinabi ng mga punong pari kay Pilato, “Huwag ninyong isulat ang, ‘Ang Hari ng mga Judio’, kundi, ‘Sinabi ng taong ito, Ako ang Hari ng mga Judio.’”
22 Ngunit sumagot si Pilato, “Ang naisulat ko'y naisulat ko na.”
23 Nang si Jesus ay maipako na ng mga kawal, kinuha nila ang kanyang kasuotan at pinaghati-hati sa apat na bahagi, isa sa bawat kawal. Kinuha rin nila ang kanyang mahabang panloob na kasuotan; ito'y walang tahi at hinabi nang buo mula sa itaas hanggang sa ibaba. 24 Kaya't(C) nag-usap-usap ang mga kawal, “Huwag nating punitin ito; magpalabunutan tayo para malaman kung kanino ito mapupunta.” Sa gayon, natupad ang isinasaad ng Kasulatan,
“Pinaghati-hatian nila ang aking kasuotan;
at para sa aking damit sila'y nagpalabunutan.”
Ganoon nga ang ginawa ng mga kawal.
25 Nakatayo sa tabi ng krus ni Jesus ang kanyang ina at ang kapatid nitong babae, si Maria na asawa ni Cleopas, at si Maria Magdalena. 26 Nang makita ni Jesus ang kanyang ina at ang minamahal niyang alagad na nasa tabi nito, sinabi niya, “Ginang, narito ang iyong anak!”
27 At sinabi niya sa alagad, “Narito ang iyong ina!” Mula noon, pinatira ng alagad na ito sa kanyang bahay ang ina ni Jesus.
Ang Pagkamatay ni Jesus(D)
28 Alam(E) ni Jesus na naganap na ang lahat ng bagay. Kaya't upang matupad ang kasulatan ay sinabi niya, “Nauuhaw ako!”
29 May isang mangkok doon na puno ng maasim na alak. Inilubog nila rito ang isang espongha, ikinabit iyon sa isang tangkay ng hisopo at inilapit sa kanyang bibig. 30 Pagkatanggap ni Jesus ng alak, sinabi niya, “Naganap na!” Iniyuko niya ang kanyang ulo at nalagot ang kanyang hininga.
Sinaksak ng Sibat ang Tagiliran ni Jesus
31 Noo'y Araw ng Paghahanda, at ayaw ng mga Judio na manatili sa krus ang mga bangkay hanggang sa Araw ng Pamamahinga, dahil natatangi ang Araw na iyon ng Pamamahinga. Kaya't hiniling nila kay Pilato na ipabali ang mga binti ng mga ipinako sa krus at alisin ang mga bangkay. 32 Pumunta nga roon ang mga kawal at binali ang mga binti ng dalawang ipinakong kasama ni Jesus. 33 Ngunit pagdating nila kay Jesus at makitang patay na siya, hindi na nila binali ang kanyang mga binti. 34 Subalit sinaksak ng isang kawal ang tagiliran ni Jesus sa pamamagitan ng sibat at agad lumabas doon ang dugo at tubig. 35 Ang nakakita nito ang nagpatotoo upang kayo rin ay maniwala.[a] Totoo ang kanyang pahayag at alam niyang katotohanan ang sinasabi niya. 36 Nangyari(F) ang lahat ng ito upang matupad ang sinasabi sa kasulatan, “Walang mababali isa man sa kanyang mga buto.” 37 At(G) may bahagi pa rin ng kasulatan na nagsasabi, “Pagmamasdan nila ang kanilang sinaksak ng sibat.”
Ang Paglilibing kay Jesus(H)
38 Pagkatapos nito, si Jose na taga-Arimatea ay nagsadya kay Pilato upang humingi ng pahintulot na makuha ang bangkay ni Jesus. (Dati ay inilihim ni Jose na siya'y isang alagad ni Jesus dahil sa takot niya sa mga pinuno ng mga Judio.) Pinahintulutan naman siya ni Pilato, kaya't kinuha niya ang bangkay ni Jesus. 39 Kasama(I) rin niya si Nicodemo na noong una ay sa gabi nagsadya kay Jesus. May dala itong pabango, mga tatlumpung kilong pinaghalong mira at aloe. 40 Kinuha nila ang bangkay ni Jesus at nilagyan ng pabango at binalot sa telang lino, ayon sa kaugalian ng mga Judio. 41 Malapit sa pinagpakuan kay Jesus ay may isang halamanan, at dito'y may isang bagong libingang hindi pa napaglilibingan. 42 Dahil noon ay bisperas ng Araw ng Pamamahinga, at dahil malapit ang libingang ito, doon nila inilibing si Jesus.

19 Then Pilate told the soldiers to take Jesus outside. He told them to hit Jesus many times with a whip.
2 The soldiers used some branches with thorns to make a crown for Jesus. They put it on his head. Then put a dark red coat on him too. They did all this as if he was a king. 3 They came to him many times and they were saying to him, ‘Hello, King of the Jews, you are great!’ At the same time they slapped his face with their hands.
4 Pilate went outside once more. He said to the crowd, ‘Listen to me. I will bring Jesus out here to you. You should know this: I do not say that this man is guilty of anything wrong. I have no reason to punish him.’ 5 Then Jesus came out. He was still wearing the hat of thorns on his head and the dark red coat. Pilate said to them, ‘Look. Here is the man!’ 6 When the leaders of the priests and their officers saw Jesus, they shouted, ‘Kill him! Kill him on a cross!’ Pilate said to them, ‘Take him for yourselves and kill him on a cross. I can find no reason why I should punish him.’ 7 The Jews answered, ‘We have a law which says that he must die. He must die because he said, “I am the Son of God.” ’
8 When Pilate heard that, he was even more afraid. 9 He went back into the house. He asked Jesus, ‘Where are you really from?’ But Jesus did not answer him. 10 Pilate said to him, ‘Are you refusing to speak to me? Remember that I have authority. I can let you go free, or I can let them kill you on a cross.’ 11 Jesus answered, ‘You could have no power against me unless God had given it to you. So the man who sold me to you has done a worse thing than you have done.’ 12 From that moment, Pilate tried to let Jesus go free. But the Jewish leaders shouted back, ‘If you let him go, you are not Caesar's friend. Nobody should say that he himself is a king. That shows that he is against Caesar!’
13 When Pilate heard those words, he brought Jesus outside. Pilate sat down on a special seat for the judge. The seat was in a place called ‘Gabbatha’ in the Jewish language. There were large flat stones there, which covered the ground. 14 It was about noon on the day when they prepared the Passover meal. Pilate said to the Jews, ‘Here is your king!’ 15 But they shouted, ‘Take him away! Take him away! Kill him on a cross!’ Pilate asked them, ‘Do you want me to kill your king on a cross?’ The leaders of the priests answered, ‘Caesar is the only ruler that we call king.’ 16 Then Pilate gave Jesus to them, so that they could kill him on a cross.
They fix Jesus to a cross
The soldiers took hold of Jesus. 17 He was carrying the cross on which they would kill him. He went out to the place called ‘The Place of the Skull’.[a] This place is called ‘Golgotha’ in the Jewish language.[b]
18 When they arrived there, the soldiers fixed Jesus to the cross. They put two other men on crosses near to him. They were on each side of him and Jesus was between them.
19 Pilate wrote a notice. Then the soldiers put it on the cross. It said: ‘Jesus from Nazareth, the King of the Jews’. 20 The place where they put Jesus on the cross was near to the city. So many of the Jews read this notice. They could read it because Pilate had written the words in three languages. He had written it in the Jewish language and in the languages of the Roman people and the Greek people. 21 The leaders of the Jewish priests said to Pilate, ‘Do not write, “The King of the Jews”. Instead, write, “This man said that he is the King of the Jews.” ’ 22 Pilate answered, ‘I will not change what I have written.’
23 After the soldiers had put Jesus on the cross, they took his clothes. They made them into four parts, one part for each soldier. They also took his long shirt, which was one single piece of cloth. 24 So they said to each other, ‘We will not tear it. Instead, we will play a game with dice. The person who wins the game will have the shirt.’ This happened in the way that the Bible had already said:
‘Each of them took some of my clothes.
They played a game with dice to win what I was wearing.’
And that is what the soldiers did.[c]
25 Some women stood near to Jesus while he was on the cross. They were his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleopas, and Mary from Magdala. 26 Jesus saw his mother there. He also saw the disciple that he loved. That disciple was standing there, near Jesus' mother. So Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, look! There is your son.’ 27 Then he said to the disciple, ‘Look! There is your mother.’ From that time, the disciple took Jesus' mother to live in his own home.
Jesus dies
28 After this, Jesus knew that everything was now finished. Then he said, ‘I am thirsty.’ He said this so that things would happen in the way the Bible already said.[d] 29 There was a pot full of cheap wine there. So someone put a piece of cloth into the wine. They fixed the cloth to the end of a branch. The branch was from a plant called hyssop. Then they lifted the cloth up to Jesus' mouth. 30 Jesus drank the wine. Then he said, ‘Everything is finished.’ He bent his head down and he let his spirit go.
A soldier puts a spear into Jesus
31 It was the day when the Jews prepare everything for their day of rest. The next day was the day for the Passover meal, so it was a very important day. The Jews did not want the men's bodies to stay on the crosses during that day of rest.[e] So they asked Pilate to tell the soldiers to break the legs of those men.[f] Then they could take the dead bodies down from the crosses.
32 So the soldiers went there. They broke the legs of the two men who were on the crosses next to Jesus. 33 Then they went to Jesus. They saw that he was dead already. So they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers put a spear into Jesus' side. Immediately, blood and water came out of his body. 35 The man who saw these things has spoken about them. What he says is true. He knows that it really happened. He is telling you the truth so that you can believe. 36 The Bible already said how it would happen. It says:
‘Nobody will break any of his bones.’[g]
37 In another place, the Bible says:
‘People will push a spear into that man's body,
and then they will look at him.’[h]
And that is how it really happened.
Joseph buries Jesus
38 There was a man called Joseph who came from the town of Arimathea. He was one of Jesus' disciples, but he was afraid of the Jewish leaders. So he had not told people that he was a disciple of Jesus. Joseph went to Pilate and asked if he could take Jesus' dead body away. Pilate agreed. So Joseph went there and he took the body away. 39 Nicodemus went with Joseph. He was the man who had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought about 33 kilograms of spices called myrrh and aloes.[i] 40 The two men covered Jesus' dead body with these spices. And they tied long pieces of linen cloth around it many times. That is how the Jewish people prepare a dead body before they bury it. 41 There was a garden near the place where they had killed Jesus on the cross. In that garden there was a place where they could put the bodies of dead people. It was a new hole in the rock, where nobody had ever put a dead body before. 42 The next day was the Jewish day of rest. So they put Jesus in that hole in the rock, because it was near.

- 19:31 A person who was dying on a cross would use his legs to push his body up. This helped him to breathe, so that he could live for a longer time. If the soldiers broke the person's legs, he would die more quickly.

- 19:39 Spices are oils or plants that have a lovely smell. The Jews used them on dead bodies. They stopped the dead bodies getting a bad smell.

3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!
6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.
7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.
14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:
18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.
19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was Jesus Of Nazareth The King Of The Jews.
20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.
21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.
23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.
25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.
33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:
34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.
39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.
40 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.
42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified(A)
19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.(B) 2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3 and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(C) And they slapped him in the face.(D)
4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out(E) to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”(F) 5 When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe,(G) Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”
6 As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”
But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him.(H) As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”(I)
7 The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die,(J) because he claimed to be the Son of God.”(K)
8 When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, 9 and he went back inside the palace.(L) “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.(M) 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”
11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.(N) Therefore the one who handed me over to you(O) is guilty of a greater sin.”
12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king(P) opposes Caesar.”
13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat(Q) at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic(R) is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation(S) of the Passover; it was about noon.(T)
“Here is your king,”(U) Pilate said to the Jews.
15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”
“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.
“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.
16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.(V)
The Crucifixion of Jesus(W)
So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross,(X) he went out to the place of the Skull(Y) (which in Aramaic(Z) is called Golgotha). 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others(AA)—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth,(AB) the king of the jews.(AC) 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,(AD) and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”(AE)
22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”
This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled(AF) that said,
So this is what the soldiers did.
25 Near the cross(AH) of Jesus stood his mother,(AI) his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.(AJ) 26 When Jesus saw his mother(AK) there, and the disciple whom he loved(AL) standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,[b] here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
The Death of Jesus(AM)
28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished,(AN) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,(AO) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar(AP) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”(AQ) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
31 Now it was the day of Preparation,(AR) and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses(AS) during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.(AT) 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced(AU) Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.(AV) 35 The man who saw it(AW) has given testimony, and his testimony is true.(AX) He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled:(AY) “Not one of his bones will be broken,”[c](AZ) 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”[d](BA)
The Burial of Jesus(BB)
38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders.(BC) With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus,(BD) the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.[e] 40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen.(BE) This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.(BF) 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation(BG) and since the tomb was nearby,(BH) they laid Jesus there.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus(A)
19 So then (B)Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. 2 And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. 3 [a]Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they (C)struck Him with their hands.
4 Pilate then went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, (D)that you may know that I find no fault in Him.”
Pilate’s Decision
5 Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!”
6 (E)Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!”
Pilate said to them, “You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.”
7 The Jews answered him, (F)“We have a law, and according to [b]our law He ought to die, because (G)He made Himself the Son of God.”
8 Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, 9 and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” (H)But Jesus gave him no answer.
10 Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have [c]power to crucify You, and power to release You?”
11 Jesus answered, (I)“You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore (J)the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”
12 From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. (K)Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.”
13 (L)When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now (M)it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”
15 But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!”
Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”
The chief priests answered, (N)“We have no king but Caesar!”
16 (O)Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus [d]and led Him away.
The King on a Cross(P)
17 (Q)And He, bearing His cross, (R)went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 18 where they crucified Him, and (S)two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. 19 (T)Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was:
JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
20 Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.” ’ ”
22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
23 (U)Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:
(V)“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”
Therefore the soldiers did these things.
Behold Your Mother
25 (W)Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of (X)Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and (Y)the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, (Z)“Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her (AA)to his own home.
It Is Finished
28 After this, Jesus, [e]knowing that all things were now accomplished, (AB)that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and (AC)they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, (AD)“It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
Jesus’ Side Is Pierced
31 (AE)Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, (AF)that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a (AG)high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately (AH)blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is (AI)true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may (AJ)believe. 36 For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, (AK)“Not one of His bones shall be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, (AL)“They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”
Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(AM)
38 (AN)After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, (AO)for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. 39 And (AP)Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of (AQ)myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. 40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and (AR)bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So (AS)there they laid Jesus, (AT)because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.
