Ai wordt veroverd

8 Daarna zei de Heer tegen Jozua: "Wees niet bang. Trek met je hele leger naar Ai. Ik geef de koning van Ai, zijn volk, zijn stad en zijn land in jullie macht. 2 Jullie zullen met de koning van Ai hetzelfde doen als met Jericho en zijn koning. Alleen mogen jullie nu de buit en al het vee zelf hebben. Laat een deel van de mannen in een hinderlaag aan de andere kant van de stad gaan liggen." 3 Toen maakte Jozua zich klaar om met een leger naar Ai te trekken. Hij koos 30.000 dappere mannen uit. Een aantal van hen zond hij 's nachts alvast op pad. 4 Hij zei tegen hen: "Jullie moeten aan de andere kant van de stad in een hinderlaag gaan liggen. Ga niet te ver bij de stad vandaan en houd je klaar. 5 Ikzelf zal met de andere mannen naar de stad gaan. Als dan hun leger uit de stad naar ons toe komt, zullen we net als de eerste keer vluchten. 6 Dan zullen ze ons achterna komen. Zo lokken we hen bij de stad weg. Want ze zullen denken dat we net als de eerste keer voor hen vluchten. 7 Dan komen jullie uit de hinderlaag tevoorschijn en veroveren Ai. En jullie Heer God zal de stad aan jullie geven. 8 Zodra jullie in de stad komen, moeten jullie die in brand steken, zoals de Heer gezegd heeft. Dit is mijn bevel." 9 Zo stuurde Jozua hen weg. Ze verborgen zich aan de westkant van de stad, tussen Bet-El en Ai. Maar Jozua bleef die nacht nog bij het volk.

10 Vroeg in de morgen verzamelde Jozua zijn mannen en trok op naar Ai. Hij en de leiders van Israël gingen voorop. 11 Zo kwam het hele leger bij de stad. Hij stelde zijn leger op aan de noordkant, met het dal tussen hem en Ai in. 12 Er lagen ongeveer 5000 mannen in de hinderlaag tussen Bet-El en Ai, aan de westkant van de stad. 13 Het leger stond dus zó opgesteld: het grootste deel van het leger aan de noordkant van de stad, en een klein deel in een hinderlaag aan de westkant van de stad. Die nacht stak Jozua het dal over.

14 Toen de koning van Ai dat 's morgens vroeg zag, trok hij met zijn mannen de stad uit om tegen Israël te strijden. Hij verzamelde zijn hele leger op een veld vlak bij het dal. Want hij wist niet dat een deel van Israëls leger in een hinderlaag lag, aan de andere kant van de stad. 15 Jozua en zijn leger deden alsof ze werden verslagen. Ze vluchtten in de richting van de woestijn. 16 Daarom werden alle mannen die in de stad waren achtergebleven, opgeroepen om hen te achtervolgen. Zo werden ze bij de stad vandaan gelokt. 17 Er bleef geen enkele man in Ai en Bet-El achter. Ze gingen allemaal Israël achterna. Zo bleef de stad onbeschermd achter.

18 Toen zei de Heer tegen Jozua: "Steek nu je speer omhoog in de richting van Ai. Want Ik geef jullie de stad." Jozua stak zijn speer omhoog in de richting van de stad. 19 Dat was het teken voor de mannen die in de hinderlaag lagen. Ze stonden haastig op en renden naar de stad. Ze trokken binnen en staken de stad in brand. 20 Toen de mannen van Ai omkeken, zagen ze aan de rook dat de stad in brand stond. Ze konden geen kant meer op. Want de mannen die naar de woestijn gevlucht waren, keerden zich nu om en vielen hun achtervolgers aan. 21 Want toen Jozua en heel Israël zagen dat de mannen vanuit de hinderlaag de stad in brand hadden gestoken, keerden ze zich om en versloegen de mannen van Ai. 22 Intussen trokken de Israëlieten die de stad hadden veroverd, hun tegemoet. Zo kwam het leger van Ai tussen de Israëlieten in te zitten, want de Israëlieten kwamen nu van twee kanten. En Israël doodde hen allemaal, niemand wist te ontsnappen. 23 Maar de koning van Ai grepen ze levend. Ze brachten hem naar Jozua.

24 De Israëlieten achtervolgden de mannen van Ai in het veld en in de woestijn. Ze doodden iedereen, tot en met de laatste man. Daarna gingen ze terug naar Ai en doodden daar iedereen. 25 Die dag werden er 12.000 mensen gedood, alle bewoners van Ai, mannen en vrouwen. 26 Jozua hield zijn speer omhoog totdat alle bewoners van de stad waren gedood. 27 Maar de buit en het vee namen de Israëlieten mee, zoals de Heer bevolen had. 28 Jozua verbrandde Ai, zodat er alleen puinhopen van overbleven. En die zijn er nu nog steeds. 29 De koning van Ai hing hij aan een paal en liet hem daar tot de avond hangen. Toen de zon onderging, gaf Jozua het bevel dat het lijk van de paal gehaald moest worden. Ze gooiden het bij de stadspoort neer en bedekten het met een grote stapel stenen. Die stenen liggen daar nu nog steeds.

Het altaar op de berg Ebal

30 Daarna liet Jozua op de berg Ebal een altaar bouwen voor de Heer, de God van Israël. 31 Ze bouwden het altaar van ruwe stenen, dus van stenen die ze niet met ijzeren gereedschap bewerkt hadden. Want dat had Mozes, de dienaar van de Heer, zo bevolen. Zo had hij het opgeschreven in het boek van de wet. Op dat altaar brachten ze brand-offers en dank-offers voor de Heer. 32 En Jozua schreef op de stenen van het altaar een kopie van de wet die Mozes voor Israël had opgeschreven. Heel Israël was daarbij.

33 Heel Israël verzamelde zich, met al zijn leiders en rechters. De Levitische priesters droegen de kist van het verbond. Links en rechts van hen stonden de leiders en de rechters. Het hele volk stond daar: alle mensen die als Israëliet geboren waren en alle vreemdelingen die bij hen woonden. De ene helft van het volk stond op de helling van de berg Gerizim, de andere helft daar tegenover op de helling van de berg Ebal. Mozes, de dienaar van de Heer, had bevolen dat het volk op die manier gezegend moest worden. 34 Daarna las Jozua de hele wet voor, de zegen en de vervloeking,[a] alles wat er in het boek van de wet stond. 35 Jozua sloeg geen woord over van wat Mozes had bevolen. Hij las alles voor aan het hele volk van Israël: mannen, vrouwen, kinderen en de vreemdelingen die zich bij hen aangesloten hadden.

8 And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai; see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land; 2 and thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: set thee an ambush for the city behind it.

3 So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up to Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand men, the mighty men of valor, and sent them forth by night. 4 And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city; go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready: 5 and I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city. And it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them; 6 and they will come out after us, till we have drawn them away from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: so we will flee before them; 7 and ye shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city: for Jehovah your God will deliver it into your hand. 8 And it shall be, when ye have seized upon the city, that ye shall set the city on fire; according to the word of Jehovah shall ye do: see, I have commanded you. 9 And Joshua sent them forth; and they went to the ambushment, and abode between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.

10 And Joshua arose up early in the morning, and mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai. 11 And all the people, even the men of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and encamped on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between him and Ai. 12 And he took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of [a]the city. 13 [b]So they set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers-in-wait that were on the west of the city; and Joshua [c]went that night into the midst of the valley. 14 And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, [d]at the time appointed, before the Arabah; but he knew not that there was an ambush against him behind the city. 15 And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness. 16 And all the people that were in [e]the city were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city. 17 And there was not a man left in Ai or Beth-el, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.

18 And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Stretch out the javelin that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thy hand. And Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city. 19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand, and entered into the city, and took it; and they hasted and set the city on fire. 20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no [f]power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers. 21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai. 22 And the others came forth out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape. 23 And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.

24 And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they pursued them, and they were all fallen by the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all Israel returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword. 25 And all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai. 26 For Joshua drew not back his hand, wherewith he stretched out the javelin, until he had [g]utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai. 27 Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for prey unto themselves, according unto the word of Jehovah which he commanded Joshua. 28 So Joshua burnt Ai, and made it a [h]heap for ever, even a desolation, unto this day. 29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until the eventide: and at the going down of the sun Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree, and cast it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised thereon a great heap of stones, unto this day.

30 Then Joshua built an altar unto Jehovah, the God of Israel, in mount Ebal, 31 as Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of [i]unhewn stones, upon which no man had lifted up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt-offerings unto Jehovah, and sacrificed peace-offerings. 32 And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, [j]which he wrote, in the presence of the children of Israel. 33 And all Israel, and their elders and officers, and their judges, stood on this side of the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, that bare the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, as well the sojourner as the home-born; half of them in front of mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of Jehovah had [k]commanded at the first, that they should bless the people of Israel. 34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the book of the law. 35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the assembly of Israel, and the women, and the little ones, and the sojourners that [l]were among them.
