De Israëlieten steken de Jordaan over

3 De volgende morgen stonden Jozua en het volk vroeg op. Ze braken het tentenkamp bij Sittim af en kwamen bij de Jordaan. Daar bleven ze drie dagen, voordat ze de Jordaan zouden oversteken. 2 Na die drie dagen gingen de leiders het tentenkamp door en zeiden tegen het volk: 3 "Straks vertrekken de Levitische priesters met de kist van het verbond van jullie Heer God.[a] Wanneer jullie dat zien, moeten jullie ook vertrekken, achter de kist aan. 4 Maar zorg ervoor dat er tussen jullie en de kist van het verbond een afstand blijft van ongeveer 2000 el (900 m). Kom niet dichterbij. Zo zullen jullie de weg weten, want jullie zijn deze weg nog nooit eerder gegaan." 5 En Jozua zei tegen het volk: "Morgen zal de Heer grote wonderen voor jullie doen. Maak jullie dus klaar voor de Heer." 6 Tegen de priesters zei hij: "Til nu de kist van het verbond op en steek de Jordaan over. Ga voor het volk uit." Toen tilden ze de kist van het verbond op en gingen voor het volk uit.

7 En de Heer zei tegen Jozua: "Vandaag zal Ik ervoor zorgen dat de Israëlieten groot ontzag voor je zullen krijgen. Ze zullen allemaal zien dat Ik met jou ben, zoals Ik met Mozes ben geweest. 8 Zeg tegen de priesters die de kist van het verbond dragen: 'Zodra jullie bij de Jordaan komen, moeten jullie aan de rand van het water blijven staan.' " 9 Toen zei Jozua tegen de Israëlieten: "Kom en luister naar wat jullie Heer God heeft gezegd. 10 Hieraan zullen jullie weten dat de levende God bij jullie is. Hieraan zullen jullie zeker weten dat Hij de Kanaänieten, de Hetieten, de Hevieten, de Perezieten, de Girgasieten, de Amorieten en de Jebusieten voor jullie zal wegjagen. 11 Let op: de kist van het verbond van de Heer van de hele aarde gaat voor jullie uit, de Jordaan in. 12 Kies nu twaalf mannen uit de stammen van Israël, uit elke stam één. 13 De priesters zullen de kist van de Heer van de hele aarde naar de Jordaan dragen. Zodra hun voeten in het water van de Jordaan staan, zal het water dat van boven komt als een dam blijven staan."

14 Zo vertrok het volk. De priesters droegen de kist van het verbond voor het volk uit. 15 In die tijd van het jaar, de oogsttijd, was de Jordaan buiten zijn oevers getreden. De priesters die de kist van het verbond droegen, stapten de Jordaan in. Zodra hun voeten in het water stonden, 16 bleef het water dat van boven kwam, stilstaan. Ver weg, bij Adam (een stad vlak bij Sartan), bleef het water staan als een dam. Het water dat nog in de rivier was, stroomde naar beneden weg, naar de Zoutzee, en de rivier viel droog. Toen stak het volk daar bij Jericho de Jordaan over. 17 De priesters die de kist van het verbond van de Heer droegen, bleven midden in de Jordaan staan op de drooggevallen bodem. Heel Israël trok over het droge naar de overkant, totdat alle Israëlieten waren overgestoken.

3 Muy de mañana, Josué y todos los israelitas partieron de Sitín y se dirigieron hacia el río Jordán; pero antes de cruzarlo acamparon a sus orillas. 2 Al cabo de tres días, los oficiales del pueblo recorrieron todo el campamento 3 con la siguiente orden: «Cuando vean el arca del pacto del Señor su Dios y a los sacerdotes levitas que la llevan, abandonen sus puestos y pónganse en marcha detrás de ella. 4 Así sabrán por dónde ir, pues nunca antes han pasado por ese camino. Deberán, sin embargo, mantener dos mil codos[a] de distancia entre ustedes y el arca; no se acerquen a ella».

5 Josué ordenó al pueblo: «Conságrense, porque mañana el Señor va a realizar grandes prodigios entre ustedes».

6 Y a los sacerdotes les dijo: «Carguen el arca del pacto y pónganse al frente del pueblo». Los sacerdotes obedecieron y se pusieron al frente del pueblo.

7 Luego el Señor dijo a Josué: «Este día comenzaré a engrandecerte ante el pueblo de Israel. Así sabrán que estoy contigo como estuve con Moisés. 8 Da la siguiente orden a los sacerdotes que llevan el arca del pacto: “Cuando lleguen a la orilla del Jordán, deténganse”».

9 Entonces Josué dijo a los israelitas: «Acérquense y escuchen lo que Dios el Señor tiene que decirles». 10 Y añadió: «Ahora sabrán que el Dios viviente está en medio de ustedes y que de seguro expulsará a los cananeos, los hititas, los heveos, los ferezeos, los gergeseos, los amorreos y los jebuseos. 11 El arca del pacto, que pertenece al Soberano de toda la tierra, cruzará el Jordán al frente de ustedes. 12 Ahora, pues, elijan doce hombres, uno por cada tribu de Israel. 13 Tan pronto como los sacerdotes que llevan el arca del Señor, Soberano de toda la tierra, pongan pie en el Jordán, las aguas dejarán de correr y se detendrán formando un muro».

14 Cuando el pueblo levantó el campamento para cruzar el Jordán, los sacerdotes que llevaban el arca del pacto marcharon al frente de todos. 15 Ahora bien, las aguas del Jordán se desbordan en el tiempo de la cosecha. A pesar de eso, tan pronto como los pies de los sacerdotes que portaban el arca tocaron las aguas, 16 estas dejaron de fluir y formaron un muro a gran distancia, más o menos a la altura del pueblo de Adán, junto a Saretán. A la vez, dejaron de correr las aguas que fluían en el mar del Arabá, es decir, el mar Muerto, y así el pueblo pudo cruzar hasta quedar frente a Jericó. 17 Por su parte, los sacerdotes que portaban el arca del pacto del Señor permanecieron de pie en tierra seca, en medio del Jordán, mientras todo el pueblo de Israel terminaba de cruzar el río por el cauce totalmente seco.

Israel Crosses the Jordan

3 Then Joshua rose early in the morning; and they set out (A)from [a]Acacia Grove and came to the Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they crossed over. 2 So it was, (B)after three days, that the officers went through the camp; 3 and they commanded the people, saying, (C)“When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, (D)and the priests, the Levites, [b]bearing it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it. 4 (E)Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure. Do not come near it, that you may know the way by which you must go, for you have not passed this way before.”

5 And Joshua said to the people, (F)“Sanctify[c] yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.” 6 Then Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, (G)“Take up the ark of the covenant and cross over before the people.”

So they took up the ark of the covenant and went before the people.

7 And the Lord said to Joshua, “This day I will begin to (H)exalt[d] you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, (I)as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. 8 You shall command (J)the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, saying, ‘When you have come to the edge of the water of the Jordan, (K)you shall stand in the Jordan.’ ”

9 So Joshua said to the children of Israel, “Come here, and hear the words of the Lord your God.” 10 And Joshua said, “By this you shall know that (L)the living God is among you, and that He will without fail (M)drive out from before you the (N)Canaanites and the Hittites and the Hivites and the Perizzites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Jebusites: 11 Behold, the ark of the covenant of (O)the Lord of all the earth is crossing over before you into the Jordan. 12 Now therefore, (P)take for yourselves twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one man from every tribe. 13 And it shall come to pass, (Q)as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of the Lord, (R)the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off, the waters that come down from upstream, and they (S)shall stand as a heap.”

14 So it was, when the people set out from their camp to cross over the Jordan, with the priests bearing the (T)ark of the covenant before the people, 15 and as those who bore the ark came to the Jordan, and (U)the feet of the priests who bore the ark dipped in the edge of the water (for the (V)Jordan overflows all its banks (W)during the whole time of harvest), 16 that the waters which came down from upstream stood still, and rose in a heap very far away [e]at Adam, the city that is beside (X)Zaretan. So the waters that went down (Y)into the Sea of the Arabah, (Z)the Salt Sea, failed, and were cut off; and the people crossed over opposite Jericho. 17 Then the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firm on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan; (AA)and all Israel crossed over on dry ground, until all the people had crossed completely over the Jordan.
