Ang Pagtutuli
5 Nabalitaan ng lahat ng hari na Amoreo sa kanluran ng Jordan at ng lahat ng haring Cananeo sa baybayin ng Dagat ng Mediteraneo kung paanong pinatuyo ng Panginoon ang Ilog ng Jordan nang tumawid ang mga Israelita. Kaya natakot sila at naduwag sa pakikipaglaban sa mga Israelita.
2 Nang panahong iyon, sinabi ng Panginoon kay Josue, “Gumawa ka ng mga patalim na gawa sa bato, at tuliin ang mga Israelita.” (Ito ang ikalawang pagkakataon na tutuliin ang mga Israelitang hindi pa tuli.) 3 Kaya gumawa si Josue ng mga patalim, at tinuli ang mga lalaking Israelita roon sa lugar na tinawag na Bundok ng Pinagtulian.
4-6 Ito ang dahilan kung bakit tinuli ni Josue ang mga lalaki: Nang umalis ang mga Israelita sa Egipto, ang lahat ng lalaki ay natuli na. Pero ang mga isinilang sa loob ng 40 taon na paglalakbay nila sa ilang ay hindi pa natutuli. Nang panahong iyon, ang mga lalaking nasa tamang edad na para makipaglaban ay nangamatay dahil hindi sila sumunod sa Panginoon. Sinabi sa kanila ng Panginoon na hindi nila makikita ang maganda at masaganang lupain[a] na ipinangako niya sa mga ninuno nila. 7 Ang mga anak nilang lalaki na pumalit sa kanila ang tinuli ni Josue, dahil hindi pa sila tuli nang panahong naglalakbay sila. 8 Matapos silang matuli, nanatili sila sa mga kampo nila hanggang sa gumaling ang mga sugat nila.
9 At sinabi ng Panginoon kay Josue, “Sa araw na ito, inalis ko sa inyo ang kahihiyan ng pagiging alipin nʼyo sa Egipto.” Kaya ang lugar na iyon ay tinawag na Gilgal[b] hanggang ngayon.
10 Noong gabi nang ika-14 na araw ng unang buwan, habang nagkakampo pa ang mga Israelita sa Gilgal, sa Kapatagan ng Jerico, ipinagdiwang nila ang Pista ng Paglampas ng Anghel. 11 Kinaumagahan, kumain sila ng mga produkto ng lupaing iyon: binusang trigo at tinapay na walang pampaalsa. 12 Mula nang araw na iyon, tumigil na ang pagbagsak ng “manna”, at wala ng “manna” ang mga Israelita. Ang pagkain nila ay galing na sa inani sa lupain ng Canaan.
13 Nang malapit na si Josue sa Jerico, bigla niyang nakita ang isang lalaking nakatayo sa harap niya na may hawak na espada. Tinanong siya ni Josue, “Kakampi ka ba namin o kalaban?” 14 “Hindi,” sagot ng lalaki. “Naparito ako bilang pinuno ng mga sundalo ng Panginoon.” Nagpatirapa si Josue bilang paggalang sa kanya at nagtanong, “Ginoo, ano po ang gusto nʼyong ipagawa sa akin na inyong lingkod?” 15 Sumagot ang kumander ng mga sundalo ng Panginoon, “Hubarin mo ang sandalyas mo, dahil banal na lugar ang kinatatayuan mo.” At sinunod ni Josue ang iniutos sa kanya.

The New Generation Circumcised
5 As soon as all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites (A)who were by the sea, (B)heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the people of Israel until they had crossed over, their hearts (C)melted and (D)there was no longer any spirit in them because of the people of Israel.
2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make (E)flint knives and circumcise the sons of Israel a second time.” 3 So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the sons of Israel at Gibeath-haaraloth.[a] 4 And this is the reason why Joshua circumcised them: (F)all the males of the people who came out of Egypt, all the men of war, had died in the wilderness on the way after they had come out of Egypt. 5 Though all the people who came out had been circumcised, yet all the people who were born on the way in the wilderness after they had come out of Egypt had not been circumcised. 6 For the people of Israel walked (G)forty years in the wilderness, until all the nation, the men of war who came out of Egypt, perished, because they did not obey the voice of the Lord; the Lord (H)swore to them that he would not let them see the land that the Lord had sworn to their fathers to give to us, (I)a land flowing with milk and honey. 7 So it was (J)their children, whom he raised up in their place, that Joshua circumcised. For they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised on the way.
8 When the circumcising of the whole nation was finished, they remained in their places in the camp until they were healed. 9 And the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the (K)reproach of Egypt from you.” And so the name of that place is called (L)Gilgal[b] to this day.
First Passover in Canaan
10 While the people of Israel were encamped at Gilgal, they kept the Passover (M)on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening on the plains of Jericho. 11 And the day after the Passover, on that very day, they ate of the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. 12 And (N)the manna ceased the day after they ate of the produce of the land. And there was no longer manna for the people of Israel, but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.
The Commander of the Lord's Army
13 When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, (O)a man was standing before him (P)with his drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?” 14 And he said, “No; but I am the commander of the army of the Lord. Now I have come.” And Joshua (Q)fell on his face to the earth and worshiped[c] and said to him, “What does my lord say to his servant?” 15 And the commander of the Lord's army said to Joshua, (R)“Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

Die Beschneidung der männlichen Israeliten
5 Die Amoriter westlich des Jordan und die Kanaaniter am Mittelmeer hörten, dass der Herr den Jordan aufgestaut hatte, damit die Israeliten ans andere Ufer gelangen konnten. Da fuhr ihnen der Schreck in die Glieder, und sie waren vor Angst wie gelähmt.
2 Zu dieser Zeit gab der Herr Josua den Auftrag: »Fertige Messer aus Stein an und beschneide so wie früher alle männlichen Israeliten!« 3 Josua tat, was Gott ihm befohlen hatte. Am Hügel Aralot (»Beschneidungshügel«) wurden die Israeliten beschnitten. 4-6 Denn als das Volk Ägypten verließ, waren noch alle männlichen Israeliten beschnitten gewesen. Doch inzwischen lebte niemand mehr, der damals im wehrfähigen Alter gewesen war. Der Herr hatte ihnen geschworen: »Weil ihr nicht auf mich gehört habt, werdet ihr das reiche Land niemals sehen, das ich euren Vorfahren versprochen habe, das Land, in dem es selbst Milch und Honig im Überfluss gibt.« Israel musste deshalb vierzig Jahre in der Wüste verbringen, bis von dieser ersten Generation keiner mehr lebte. Während die Israeliten die Wüste durchzogen, hatten sie ihre neugeborenen Söhne nicht beschneiden lassen. 7 Nun aber wurden alle männlichen Nachkommen beschnitten, die Gott dem Volk in dieser Zeit geschenkt hatte.
8 Das Volk blieb einige Zeit an seinem Lagerplatz, bis die Wunden der Beschnittenen verheilt waren. 9 Da sprach der Herr zu Josua: »Heute habe ich die Schande von euch abgewälzt, die seit Ägypten auf euch lastete.« Deshalb nennt man diesen Ort bis heute Gilgal (»abwälzen«).
Passahfeier bei Gilgal und Ausbleiben des Manna
10 Bei Gilgal, in der Ebene von Jericho, feierten die Israeliten am 14. Tag des 1. Monats abends das Passahfest. 11 Am nächsten Tag aßen sie zum ersten Mal etwas aus ihrem neuen Land: Brot, das ohne Sauerteig gebacken war, und geröstetes Getreide. 12 Und genau an diesem ersten Tag nach dem Passah, an dem sie etwas vom Ertrag des Landes gegessen hatten, blieb das Manna[a] aus. Von nun an ernährten sich die Israeliten nicht mehr vom Manna, sondern vom Ertrag des Landes Kanaan.
Josua begegnet dem Befehlshaber über das Heer Gottes
13 In der Nähe von Jericho sah Josua sich plötzlich einem Mann mit gezücktem Schwert gegenüber. Josua ging auf ihn zu und rief: »Gehörst du zu uns oder unseren Feinden?« 14 »Weder noch«, antwortete der Fremde. »Ich bin[b] der Befehlshaber über das Heer Gottes. Und jetzt bin ich hier zur Stelle.« Da warf sich Josua ehrfürchtig vor ihm zu Boden. »Ich gehorche dir, Herr!«, sagte er. »Was befiehlst du?« 15 »Zieh deine Schuhe aus«, antwortete der Befehlshaber über das Heer Gottes, »denn du stehst auf heiligem Boden.« Josua gehorchte.
